windows xp
When I load up Dominion Wars, everything works until I go to the fleet setup, load game, options/preferences, and any other floating screen. It gets totally choppy...it's not the framerate...the directx rendering still goes fine at around 60 fps but my mouse moves about once for every two or three seconds. Can anyone explain the lag? Oh, and I have windows XP. Btw, it has lag when I launch as well...when I'm playing, the ships move fine, everything is smooth, but the cursor moves like it had a million tons attached to it.

This problem is happening to a lot of people with many different games, you get good peformance but the mouse seems like it is trying to catch up a couple of frames or something. I get it in Quake 3, and I know of no solutions yet.

Solution?
For running older games like DW i had to set the compatibility mode for it to either Windows 98 / ME, or Windows 95. You can do this by right clicking on the shortcut(or the exectuable itself, either one) hitting properties, going to the compatibility mode setting there and chosing the correct one. That solved that part of my problem. Now, i'm curious since you are running XP, are your graphics in-game all discolored becuase mine are, makes everything look green. Anyone know how to fix that?

Windows XP + Bad Mouse
I get the same problem with XP and the mouse pointer with Dominion Wars.
I think I got it with Windows 2000 though.
I'm running the Optical Explorer Mouse with what I think is the latest version of the Intellipoint software.
It's a real bugger.
Anyone got a solution? I'll keep trying

Re: Windows XP + Bad Mouse
I'm having both problems. I solved the mouse problem by running the game in 98 comp mode but my graphics suck! XP has the newest drivers for nearly every video card, mine included. Hopefully we can figure out the video part.
But when i switch compatability to Win 98 / Me
i can't start the programm...
Instead i get the error message
Unable to load FT_THUNK (Kernel32)
Any Ideas?

Perhaps A Solution
Look, everyone's up in arms about this game and the fact that it doesn't work too well with XP. Well, the game producers couldn't care less, so I'm trying to contact Microsoft and ask them about the problem. Maybe they can bring out a patch for issues like this? Microsoft is really the only option left for other user like me which find all the current solutions useless.
I'm trying to send an email tomicrosoft, and I suggest that the rest of you that are having this problem do so too, as it will only increase our chances of finding a solution.
We can only hope the Bill Gates can bring up a solution.....................

Windows XP compatibility problems
Hi, like people out there I also have the mouse and gameplay problems.
Unfortunately Microsoft don't care, and the people who make the game and continue to sell it also don't care. I was an avid user of the official forum and strove to find a way of curing this problem.
As far as the official moderators were concerned if you have the us version you're fine cause the compatibility mode can be set to win98/me setting. if you had the Euro version tough luck, the .exe is different and wont run in compat mode.(they also did not release a patch 1.5 for the euro version only the US!!!)
There was one person on there who managed to make a fix for it by altering the .exe but every time he left a link the mods deleted the thread. SO unless this person leaves a thread here or someone has knows it then I'm afraid we are up s#!t creek without a paddle.

Mouse problems in Windows XP (and 2000)
Try this with any game:
Play the Single player mode and see if the mouse behaves correctly.
If it does......then
The problem is probably ZoneAlarm or a similar type program.
Disable or Quit any program like ZoneAlarm, and
then try the Multiplayer option in the game....
This fix worked for me, Hope it helps you....

patch available for other games with same problem?
Have found patch for FT_Thunk problem, which should fix the problem in KERNEL32.DLL, but this patch was specifically written for a different game. I have exactly the same problem with Cleopatra, Queen of the nile (Expansion set for Pharaoh). Is a different patch available ?

patch problems?
I have a problem with the game too. I get to the fleet setup screen no problem, but as soon as I try to launch my fleet, my computer crashes and reboots automatically, and I get "The system has recovered from a serious problem" error. I am running Windows XP.
I downloaded the above mentioned patch (I'm trying everything at this point) and when I try to install it, I get an error "ds9dw.exe : unknown version"
Any idea what the heck this means? I'm getting really frustrated with Win XP. Makes me regret ever upgrading. I'm about ready to format and go back to 98!

If anyone knows a way to fix this problem, please reply.
I loaded DS9DW and when i launch the program it gives me a BinkW32.DLL is incorrectly installed error. i tried to uninstall and then re-install, but that didn't work either.
i use XP and have Pentium 4 2.53 GHz, 512MB of RAM, plently of harddrive, and a GeForce graphics card. I have the compatibility set for Windows 98/Me, but it still won't launch properly.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Re Dominion Wars
This game really sucks on XP , mind u I heard it was a really boring game any way, that's probably why the producers abandoned it, on game they'd like to forget
