After training for a couple of years and seeing the dramatic change in my body, Darrin thought I had the potential to step on stage and do very well. After doing some homework, I finally decided to register for my first show and get some suits. And basically thats my story of how I decided to finally step on stage. I love the feeling of working towards a goal and competing gives me that
Also, I was very competitive as a young person and since I got into that accident I had thought I could never compete at anything again...until now--this has given me a whole new possitive outlook on life and something I can focus on.
Re: what made you decide to compete
thanks loriann you've done so well and must be very proud of yourself. What do you tell others if they are on the edge and not sure to compete or not?
Re: what made you decide to compete
I usually ask what type of competition they want to do--that makes a difference because there are some "bikini" contests and some that are hardcore--if a girl doesn't have a lot of muscle but wants to show her accomplishments i would recommend a model search but if they have potential to do well in a figure competition --she would have to be fairly lean with muscle --that would be my recommendation. They have to want to do it, you are going up on stage to be judged by the world and you don't want to fail, because a lot girls will go unprepared and have a not so good experience, people can be mean. Their heart and soul have to be in it. Other than that, i totally encourage competing if they want to take it to the next level and will do everything i can to help. I will tell someone if they are not ready in the time line they are lookn at, there are a lot of shows, so taking a little extra time is worth it. I want to see everyone succeed and do well, but importantly never regret their decision.
Hopefully some of the girls who are competing for the first this year can answer "what made you decide to compete" I love hearing these stories, they are so inspiring.
Re: what made you decide to compete
All throughout highschool i was active: played on the girls hockey team, did track and field, snowboarded....BUT was always that fat/chubby girl...why??? I ate maybe a meal a day..my metabolism was shot or as i tell people non-existant. I started to read diet articles meet people who were very knowledgable and then landed a summer job at a supplement store..it all came together for me. Started to eat more clean foods, started to hit the gym HARD..started saying no to the late night parties and pizza. As people started to compliment all my hard work i wondered to myself..where can i go with this hard work and how can i show it off. In October 2005 I worked a PVL booth at a local show (this being my first show i ever attended) it is that day I knew I wanted to start training and dieting for a show. I looked up when upcoming shows were and what was realistic to my where my body was at that point along with my school schedule. Started to diet 20 weeks out just to be extra safe and here I am now 6.5 weeks out to my first figure show...I am deciding on whether to try some photo shoots as well.
To put the whole story into perspective :
starting weight(2004) = 190lbs, body fat geessh = 25%+ waist = 36 inches
NOW(2006) = weight 126lbs, body fat 11% ( last time i got it checked..) waist 25 inches

Re: what made you decide to compete
Awesome advise there LA Hey Christine...WOW girl, what an impressive result...you go Chick You must definitely post before and after photo...pleeeeeeese!!!! I love stories like these.Your life must have been turnd around big time!!!!
Ok what made me compete? I was practically chucked on the stage. I am not kidding...I used to train my heart out cos I loved lifting weights and feel the sweat trickling down while hoofing the cardio This PT at the gym was nagging me for a few years to enter, but I had no time-commitments with National volley team, personal and more.So I kept declining..but one day I came back to gym from World Champs in Mexico in 2000 and was told the gym enetered me into bodybuilding comp and I have like 4 weeks to get ready
I jumped on stairmaster and spend like 80 minutes pounding it like mad...I could say no,but my friend just took over the gym and he asked me to represent the gym. I just could not say no.I won the comp and rest is history. It was followed by another 5 wins.I stopped in 2001 so I was at it for one year only.I might do some figure in the future...maybe
Re: what made you decide to compete
Cheers Guys, I am from New Zealand...sorry I still did not get around to inroduce myself properly. I will write a bit more later in the week (going through immigration proccess and it is a pain )
Yes I still play volley LA-all the time. I live right on the beach,so all I need is just run down the road and yeeeha
I will post some of my Miss Bikini Photos once I figure out how to do it. My Bodybuilding days...hmmm those photos are like in the safe...I did not like my look at al All comps were done under IFBB rules back in South Africa.I basically won all my regional, provincial and then National Titles . I won National Novice under 57 kg in 2000 and year later National Open under 57kg.
Then I quit bodybuilding, reduced my size and entered Miss Bikini/Fitness SA in 2003 and came second. Lost by half a point due to my waddle walk LOL.High heels are just not my thing . I am always barefoot or in sneakers!!
Re: what made you decide to compete
Thanks for sharing..you are a great inspiration For your own preference, did you like your bodybuilding physique or do you prefer your bikini look better..(obviously one is easier to maintain..lol)?
I hear ya on the "waddle" walk....lol, I have to practice in my heels for months before i get on stage I live in running shoes and sandals.
Re: what made you decide to compete
Thanx LA Without a doubt in my mind my Bikini bodz I tend to get too muscular and bulky when I hit weights hard and do wrong type of movements for my body type.It is genetics...my grandpa and my dad were both stocky...I just look at weight and grow LOL. When I was getting ready for my Open the guys used to tell me if I get any bigger arms I will make Popey look like scrawny kid Honestly I have spent 2years getting rid of my size,by eating nearly vegan diet and stacks of cardio...no weights at all. And that is where really good PT cames in to asses the individual client and give them diet and training plan that will work with his/her genetics and the goals that needs to be reached. I was very naive and had no clue and listen to the advise of people who did not respect my needs...it was you need more mass...you need more mass...and no shape in mind. So My shape got ruined over the time...I have been working hard to correct that
The people who know me now or saw my pics from miss bikini think I am talking rubbish, but once I flip my bodybuilding photos their jaws drop and they fight with me that it is not me ..LOL
And no do not ask me to post it here..no ways Jose
Ciao
Re: what made you decide to compete
lol...now we are all curious!!
I hear you about the competition world and eveyone thinking that bigger is better..when in fact its not. I refuse to get "bigger" we just work on maintaining what I've gained and refining my shape and quality of muscle..
Good job for acheiving the look you wanted..you look spectacular!!!!
Re: what made you decide to compete
Sheees I do not mean to have this aura or secret how I used to look and make everyone wonder Bugger...I know I should have kept my mouth shut
You are on the right track with you attitude LA..well in my opinion that is Enough muscle with right shape and just the right amount of leaness is my cuppa tea/coffee I have always loved smaller tighter physiques over bulky smoother ones.
BTW thank you for the compliment-I will take it...it has been a looooong challenging journey
