toning my arms
what would you suggest to give me sexy shapely arms, i have flab that jiggles under my arms and want to get rid of it desperately to be able to show them off this summer. im willing to do anything. i love the girls in oxygen mag they have the perfect arms. help
That more than likely isnt a loose muscle, its fat. You want to "tone" those arms then you need to adjust your diet and get your body fat percentage down into the mid teens as a woman.
As for the weight training part, hit the weights hard. Use a weight that will cause your muscles to fail somewhere between 8-12 reps. When i say "fail" I mean "fail". If you finish your 12th rep and I come up to you and drop $1000 on your lap for one more rep you shouldnt be able to perform it, thats failure.
For nice looking arms you need to do 2-3 bicep and 2-3 tricep exercises. Make sure that they are differnet movements, by that I mean dont do a DB curl then a barbell curl then a cable curl. THey are all the same, perform movements that hit the muscle from different angles.
Dont forget your shoulders too, nice bis and tris dont look right unless you have a nice shoulder to tie everything together. Make sure when working your shoulders you train each of the three heads of the delt to ensure a nice round shapely shoulder.

Re: toning my arms
Throw a pic of yourself in the "members pics" section along with your weight and height and I can give you a best guess. Or you can get your body comp done at a gym and let me know your weight and body comp, I can do the math and figure out a timeline for you.
Re: toning my arms
im new to this online thing and not 2 sure about posting a photo yet, i will get the body comp done this week and let you know. thank you darrin
Re: toning my arms
With any part be it arms,legs,calves....if you want nice toned bodz...GO HARD OR GO HOME. Unless you are genetic freak you won't build big muscles, but after some time you will start getting nice toned buffed bodz. And only if you go on hardcore diet will you see much more definiton. I am fairly muscular myself, but if I eat clean but not hardcore I look athletic and toned. If I step it up and hit hard diet and extra intensity on weights I go from Athletic to muscular
Re: toning my arms
You mention "working on the shoulders"....I'm confused. Does the outer, upper arm classify as "shoulder"?
I ask this because I am using weights and have built up my biceps and triceps, but still have two problems.
First, I still have the "swinginess" underneath, although it is better.
Mainly, though, my arms do not "look" toned when they are just hanging? If I move them, they do, but in a "hanging position", they are not shapely. Is the shoulder the upper top portion of my arm? I notice that this part does not seem to be "toned", i.e., it is not "rounded".
If so, what do you recommend with dumbells for this part of the shoulder/arm? I have been told to hold the weights straight by my sides/thighs, and lift straight out slowly, then lower, which is what I have been doing the last week or two. 8 lb. weights for this particular exercise, 15 reps twice.
Note that I am 44, and female, so I'm sure my arms are going to be MUCH harder to shape up.

I should have mentioned this, I guess. I'm currently doing "behind my back" standing arm lifts, lying down arm "behind" arm lifts, two types of curls, and exercises for the triceps with 15 lb. weights. I also am doing curls with 20 lbs., which has built up my biceps quite a bit.
If I am trying to increase shoulder muscle, do I use 15 lb., 20 lb., or 8 or 10 lb. weights? The 20 lbs. is hard for me right now, but it's doable.
And lastly, is the "Men's Chest" machine helping shoulder muscles? I know it works on chest, but specifically, those upper outer arms?

Re: toning my arms
wisedup, I am getting a mental picture of your physique and you are decribing one that looks like it may have lost WEIGHT the wrong way and wasted a lot of muscle in the process. This sounds like a classic catobolic weight loss. Loose and flabby arms and the like.
From the lack of education you seem to have with human anatomy as well the lack of understanding what machines or exercises target what muscle. I suggest you find a decent trainer in your area to (at the very least) teach you these basics. I wouldnt want you to waste years doing movements incorrectly and getting no where, or worse, hurting yourself.
As far as your age goes, its a matter of mind PERIOD. I have trained people in their 80s and made huge improvements. I have put over 20lbs of muscle on a man in his 60's while stripping fat naturally.
Dont think age means anything, yes it may mean longer, but thats all. YOu can look anyway you want if you do everything 100% right.
If you want, send me a picture, present weight (and body comp if possible), what your daily meals are like and your workout. Be discriptive as possible and Ill point out any glaring errors. How's that?
Re: toning my arms
Ditto for mind over matter I am 39 and according to clinical studies and medical research I should be loosing lean mass every year and my metabolism should be slowing down...well every year I manage to add a bit of lean mass and my metabolism is ticking just fine. Look at these two chicks:

i love how Darrin tells it like it is. Without proper knowledge no one will get the results they desire. i highy recommend reading his WHOLE website, it has helped me tremendously.
Darrin is famous for "tough love"!! He has to be tough in order to keep his clients on track. He teaches everyone to be self sufficiant by giving them the tools they need to succeed on their own. Darrin's advice is priceless
Re: toning my arms
LA,
I think that "tough love" is the best approach, I used to be a counsellor and my job was all about listening and understanding, But there comes a point where sometimes a reality check and a shock to the system is the best approach! I feel that people tend to stagnate without the right direction but then become reliant on that direction and don't seek out ways to do things themselves!
