the AGM
So it's AGM time again and I see the usual list of contravertial proposals has come forward again.
The main focus this year seems to be on the Irish Championship which it now seems is no longer finding the best player in Ireland. The arguement is that if the best players are forced to play in it then Irish chess will benefit. Is this really such a great idea though? I find basing the selection primarily on one tournament a backward step. We have a system at the minute that takes in a wide range of criteria, judging by one tournament alone, which some people might not be able to make it to, seems dangerous to me. By all means we need bigger and more frequent tournaments in Ireland. There is no other way to encourage the growth of Irish Chess, emigration cannot be seen as a viable option here.
The other aspects I did mostly approve of. Ending the bitch fighting seems a good idea. Setting up a real coaching system is also badly needed to foster talent. A grand prix type circuit also sounds interesting.

Re: the AGM etc
Your points are interesting and I think valid. On a slighly related note however - is it just my impression or is Chess one of the most disorganised sports in Ireland. Its now September and there are no details of any tournaments beyond the end of this month! I am active in various other sports/activities most of whom have schedules extending well into next year.

yeah it is a bit depressing that news and information is slow in coming into being. Most unions let you follow a national chess championship on the internet nowadays, but nothing like that is organised here. I suppose it is just a symptom of how difficult it is to get people involved in organising Irish Chess.
Does anyone think the official irishchess site needs a makeover by the way?

Didn't they already give it a makeover recently?!
Re: agm
No, they just moved the site.
I still hate the navigation on that site with a passion. The way information is organised makes it pretty hard to find what you actually want.

ICU Site
It's not just a makeover it needs. It should be hosted somewhere that doesn't attempt to put spyware, browser hijackers and so on on your machine when you visit it.
Watch this space for a new LCU site in the next few weeks.
