Re: personal trainers?
Awesome question! It is really hard to find a GOOD trainer. There are many trainers out there today and to be honest, many of them are crap! It is very hard to tell the good ones from the bad by simply looking at them. Although, generally if a trainer is in terrible shape him or herself chances are he or she is not going to be able to mentor you like I feel they should. With me my physique was always my best marketing tool, I don’t just preach, I practice what I preach.

A good place to start would be to look at their education, unfortunately this can sometimes be misleading. I have come across many trainers with university degrees in kinesiology, physiotherapy and many other sport related degrees. These people generally have a very good knowledge of the human body but can’t seem to apply it. Without their own time in the trenches, working out hard and picking up many tips and pointers you don’t learn in school, they can’t offer you real world knowledge.

Often the information taught in schools is far behind the advances made in training and nutrition in the private sector. Many people come out of school with a head filled with outdated theory. It takes a long time for new discoveries to make it to school curriculum. That’s why it is so important for a trainer to be passionate about fitness and nutrition. If he or she is not they will not keep on top of the latest discovery that could help their clients achieve their goals faster.

There are many associations providing certifications for trainers out there. Again some are good, some are not so good. Anyone with a few hundred dollars and three days to spare can become certified. Provided they pass their often easy as pie certification test. Some of the more respected certifications in the industry are ISSA, ACE, ….

I feel that you should sit down with a few trainers you are interested in before you make up your mind. Try to get a feel for each of them, you are going to spend a fair amount of time with this person so you better make sure you can get along with him or her. The trainer you choose should be passionate about fitness and nutrition, they should be as excited about your goals as you are. If they come across weak in your consultation, chances are they will on the gym floor too.

If the trainer you are thinking about works at a gym watch him or her with clients. I have had people choose me as their trainer after watching me for a few weeks with different clients, seeing how I interact with them and hearing the coaching I give. I have even had people choose me based on watching me go through my own workout. Seeing how hard I push myself enforces the mentor relationship.

Once you make your choice, give yourself 100% to your trainer. You are paying for this person’s expertise, take advantage of it. I have had clients with a little knowledge (and we all know a little knowledge is a dangerous thing) try to take control of a session. I remind them that they are paying me to make a change in the body that they couldn’t and that they should listen to me more and offer fewer opinions. Trainers don’t like to be told how they should train. Acting like a know it all with your trainer is a sure way to be forced into a vomit inducing workout!

Another thing trainer’s hate is the word “can’t”! I hate having a client say that they can’t lift something, or do one more rep. If your trainer is aware of your level of fitness and is reading your body language he or she knows what you are capable of more than you do. I would never make a client do something that would put them in an unsafe environment. My clients learn this and put complete control in my hands.

So bottom line, scout out a few trainers before making the final decision. Ask as many questions as you can and see how the trainer’s answers make you feel. Feel free to ask for referrals or testimonials. Inquire about their education but take it with a grain of salt, the proof is on the floor not a piece of paper hanging on the wall.

If you can't find a good trainer in your gym just keep posting questions here. As for your actual training, ensure that you push the hell out of yourself, rest, and do it all over again.

Re: personal trainers?
ok, youre saying i could end up with a person who became a trainer in 3 days? that is really scary. why dont facilities like gyms have standards? i would hate to hire a trainer and find out they have no prior experience exeept for doing their own workouts. i'm actually quite turned off knowing that this goes on. i'm glad i asked you that question, i'm preparing a list of questions i need answers to before i put my life in someones care. until then YOU are the man with the knowledge and expertise and i'll be asking the questions here.

Re: personal trainers?
Like I stated in my opening comments on the home page of my website, I am going to tell the truth. Even if it means I am going to make this industry look bad in the process. Unfortunately gyms hire trainers for many reasons other than the training skills. Most gyms dont even require any certification at all. Some dont even workout themselves. I remember the guy that got hired along with me, he was about 50lbs overweight and never touched a weight in his life. Needless to say he wasnt a trainer long, but he never should have been one to start.

Its a gamble for sure but I will answer any questions you have, you can even bounce things off me that you hear during a consult and I will throw in my 2 cents. Not that I am the best trainer in the world but I can identify a crap one at the very least.

Good Luck

Re: personal trainers?
See how things go on your own, you already have kicked up your workout intensity and will reap results from that alone. Throw a few diet tips along with the new intensity level and you will see a new you in 3 months.

You really want to kick it up a knotch?

Why dont you take a picture of yourself today.
Ask me as many questions as you want.
Take the advise to heart and follow it to the letter.
Take another picture in twelve weeks.
Post them here.

How is that for a challenge or a goal? Let me know.

Re: personal trainers?
Primo thread:D Thanx D for all that imput;) I worked in the gym and did a couple of comps and let me tell you the amount of Psychos you run into in this business is scarry:evil Some PT's put their clients through uneccessary HELL-unsafe training and diet:rolleyes For me I prefer to get advise from someone who either competed or is in awesome shape;) and someone I can trust. I have never really worked 100% under anyone...just help here and there. Now with the internet doors are opening to so many new oportunities. Before you had to work with someone in your area or just do it over the phone, faxing etc...Now all you have to do is to go on line and cruize all over the world and see who is out there:D Now the technologies are so advanced you can send videos and photos in matter of seconds(well if you know how to do it) no need to see your PT in flesh and blood;) Once you make that call you have got to be 100% commited as Darrin said. You acn't have a coach and then listen half way and take other advise from people. Then it is mix and match and results are short of disasterous:(

Re: personal trainers?
I had the same experience a few months ago when i decided to get a PT boy was i in for a shock:eek
Firstly my trainer was fat, secondly didn't know how to use the smiths machine and thirdly wasn't very motivated to get to appointments on time!
My first meeting was meet with A floored PT she was so amazed with what i had already accomplished on my own but was also amazed at the program i had developed for myself, she said that she would have just given me a standard program at that i was better off doing my own thing:eek
I was so angry that i had payed good money to be told i should stick with what i am doing>:
I then tried another PT and she was the most uninspiring person i have ever meet not to mention she couldn't keep up with me and i am not ultra fit yet but that day ended with the PT going home for a sleep:eek
Needless to say i was disgusted and have lost faith in PT's an am now on the look out for a well organised highly trained and upto date PT that can push me not the other way round:D

Re: Personal Trainers
When I joined a gym, I also got 3 appts. with a Personal Trainer. I knew almost as much as she did and during our time on the gym floor, she was more interested in flirting with all the guys and talking to her other clients then concentrating on me. I wasn't impressed!

Ange

And the gym's nutritionist was chunky!!!

To change the vibes a bit...on the other hand there are some amazing PT's out there. People who are passionate about the industry and know what they are doing:b As with any field you will have brilliant and not so brilliant people involved...
