"'Ko-lar,' she said, indicating her collar. 'It is the same word in English,' I cried.
She did not understand my outburst. Gorean, as I would learn, is rich in words borrowed from Earth languages; how rich it is I am not a skilled enough philologist to conjecture. It may well be that almost all Gorean expressions may be traced to one or another Earth language.
Yet, the language is fluid, rich and expressive. Borrowed expressions, as in linguistic borrowing generally, take on the coloration of the borrowing language; in time the borrowings become naturalized, so to speak, being fully incorporated into the borrowing language; at this point they are, for all practical purposes, words within the borrowing language. How many, in English, for example, think of expressions such as 'automobile,' 'corral,' and 'lariat' as being foreign words?
'Collar!' I said. Eta frowned. 'Ko-lar,' she repeated, again indicating the neck band of steel fashioned on her throat. 'Ko-lar,' I said, carefully following her pronunciation." - SLAVE GIRL OF GOR, Pg. 80 - 81
Re: ki and aii, urth and blackwyne
wait.. i dont agree with that.. some people choose to use those words.. no biggie like you dont know what they are saying.. and i do believe i read somewhere.. aii was used in the books.. and tellme this.. we are playing aol gor.. does it make a diff how someone says yes no earth or coffee? prolly not.. there are other concerns on gor then how people speak.. mainly how the rp has changed.. and maybe why has it changed.. and how do we get it back.. what about these wars? cmon now.. okay is it summer and everyone wants to kill off thier chars? i dont know.. what about slave attitiude.. fw behavior? i think this is more important to be dealing with.. and then.. its like we are such a diverse group.. so there will always be something like this brought up.. who are we to police how others speak in role play.. we each have our own style..
its up to them how they wish to play.. so ki i dont have a problem with using an urthan mind.. hell an earthan mind and a kolar? woohoo.. and aye.. i love to rp.. and aii.. words like that dont affect my rp with others.. just shows a lil bit of difference in all of us
Re: ki and aii, urth and blackwyne
I've most often seen "aii" or a variation thereof used as an exclamation of surprise or pleasure in the books. Someone find a quote where it directly means yes?
I've read the discussion of "ki" being a negative term, but I've yet to find a place in the books where it is actively and regularly used in place of the word "no." And what the heck does "a girl ki knows" mean? "a girl no knows" or "a girl not knows" ???????? Let's try to have at least SOME semblance of decent grammar! We can't all be english majors, but I could at least hope MOST of us got through fourth grade english class.
And there is NO place in the books where the spelling of black wine is bastardized into blackwyne. I don't consider it creative, I consider it a pathetic take on Rhydinians bloodwyne, wyne etc. Make up your mind, Rhydinian or Gorean.
blackwine
i really dont care how they spell it.. just no matter what make sure i get mine in the morning. as far as the word ki? yeah i have seen it used in some mighty strange ways.. but like i said earlier.. there are more problems in gor then the actual spelling or use of words.. i mean look at the pgs? remember the fleer rebellion? oh my kings lol we have had some strange twists show up.. anyway.. im ki here to anger you. but you may want to check on some websites made by Ubar Luther.. i know i read some info on the wording of somethings.. its worth a check
Re: blackwine
I also think the way they're spelling blackwine is a degenerate form of how they use Wyne in Rhydin. They think the Y makes it look more unique or exotic I guess then the regular spelling. Somehow it's been brought into Gor as well, likely by people who play in both Gor and Rhydin.
As for Aii, it's a Exclamation of surprise or excitement. It doesn't mean Yes, but is an Affirmative. Like when you say "Alright!" or "Hell Yes!" Aii is basically the same thing, but doesn't actually mean "Yes".
As for Ki, I did see a reference to Ki also in Slave Girl of Gor I think. It doesn't mean "No" though. It's a negatory. Sort of like saying you are Not Skilled might be Ki-skilled. But, if we're all speaking Gorean, then why use word mixes like that. The proper way would be to say the other word in Gorean also. Ki-<Insert Gorean word here>.
Ko'lar, I also found in Slave Girl of Gor, as the quote above shows. It's the way the word is said in Gor, but again, if we're all speaking Gorean, then collar should be used. Kajira is used for flavor. It means slave. Overdoing it though just makes it worthless.
One other word that's commonly mispelled is Sardar. I keep seeing Sadar. If you're going to use a Gorean word for flavor, at least spell it right. Just like Tar-Sardar-Gor. It's Ta-Sardar-Gor. To the Priest Kings of the Home Stone. Spell it right if you're going to use it please. It looks foolish otherwise, not to mention setting a bad example to new players.
