Maybe you should move, y'know? Let America fester in its own folly. Come to New Zealand, where we love fantasy so much that we're filming the Lord Of The Rings, and making billions off it. Also gives you a great deal of freedom from certain fundamentalists (muslim, christian, cult of the Guys From Montana) wanting to get at you. TP said it himself: NZ is far enough out of everything that no-one wants to bomb us. Its brilliant!

That's about all, for now.

No, really?
I would adore moving. College first, then we'll see. As much as I really do like the US, I don't truly plan on ever settling down there. It's no wholly bad, but...it's very--something. It's 'something' in the way that malls always smell like 'something.' Not good or bad...but just distinctive.
I really should not be online after 12:30...at least if I am I should not post and attempt to make sense. I am getting out of here...

I'm not overly fond of the sates either (particularily wisconsin). What's the weather like in NZ? I destest snow and after college I'm out of here! Too bad Hawaii's such a pain to get to, such perfect weather...

name that book: in a post nuclear war scenario, the only humans left alive are some civilised telepaths in New Zealand who appear to have avoided the war, and a lot of religious people dotted around the rest of the world who seem to have a prblem with mutants.
Re: Bandsman, as well as thief
Wasn't in a book, actually. I went to see Terry live a couple of months ago, with Kevin. That was in the speech he made there.
As to NZ's weather, we're about as temperate a climate as you can get. While we do have snow on our mountains and in the far south, most parts of the country never experience temperatures below 0 Celcius. Generally, we're a pretty warm country. You may have to learn how to cope with cicada noises, though. As for landforms, re-watch The Lord Of The Rings. We've got the lot. In fact, I go skiing on the mountian which makes up most of the set for mordor. Its called Whakapapa skifield, on Mt. Ruapehu.

I give up...The first thing that popped into my head was the old one called...well, I can't remember. Anyway, I never even read it.
Well, this is not fair. Why can't TP come to WI? Besides obvious reasons...Well, Jasper Fforde is coming in March, tho ^_^ We're going to that, believe you me!

Re: Name that book
well, you've had a whole three days to think about it and while i know that's not very long, if i leave it any longer i'll forget.
So, with no further ado, the book was The Chrysalids by John Wyndham. Not one of his best books, in my opinion, but all of his books are worth a read, if you like that sort of thing.
He also wrote The Day of The Triffids, and The Midwich Cuckoos (filmed as The Village of the Damned).
re: Name That Book
I read Day Of The Triffids.. The ending didn't much appeal to me. Were the others any good?

Re: re: Name That Book
I suppose it did end leaving things a bit incomplete.... the Triffids still roaming freely over most of the world, but I think it was better than someone coming up with an instant and unrealistic solution to the problem.
Thinking about it some of his other books do end in a similar way, with a dilema or catastrophe solved, but there's going to be a long recovery period afterwards.
They're all good books, they mostly still stand up to the tests of current science and must have been even better when first published. I'd recommend you get them from the library if you see them. The Kraken Awakes and the Midwich Cuckoos are both good, and watch the film if you spot it... even tho its in b&w its still earily chilling.... all those kids *shudder*

man i'm dumb. i have never seen this thread before.
anyway.....
the chrysalids.... i have/had that book, but never got round to reading it.... damn my bad taste in the past..
day of the triffids was a bit...unfinished in my veiw, but, i agree, at least it didn't do some wacked out ending. i still like the idea of russian super plants that can walk, talk and kill though.
chrysalids... must get... yay surviving new zealanders. especially telepathic ones
u americans should come to NZ when u've finished college.
we have no job opportunities, no growth opportunities, or and a inferior education system, be we sure have cool things to see and do.
is wisconsin the state that doesn't exist?
P.s. i have almst no musical talent except when it comes to singing. i tried the piano - failed. i tried the violin - flopped. the tenor horn - just about went mental. i even tried this instrument that was kinda half keyboard, and half flute - i couldn't even play that.
i can/could sure as hell sing though.
wow, aren't i modest.

I think Wisconsin exists.. or it did last time I checked. I guess it isn't so bad, we're pretty stable and soooo suburban. And the schools are excellent.. but there really is NOTHING to do!
Oh, you sing? My mom's an opera singer, so I'm surrounded all the time... with Wagner at eleven pm when I'm trying to sleep. I sing too, and play the violin. I used to play the clarinet...and the bells...and percussion...and piano. But it was tooo much to handle. What is a half keyboard half flute called? A Fluboard? He he.

we used to have something a bit like that. it was closer to half keyboard half recorder.... and i'm sure it drove everyone half mad.... i don't remember if it had a name... it was largely green, with cream bits that may have once been white.... and a few black keys, of course...
rob, reminising... and now wondering how 'reminising' should be spelt
Re: re: Name That Book
I kinda need to clear up NZ's name here.. The only reason Squirel's so pissed off at the education system is because of a new assessment system, NCEA. (it was an Irish idea.. it flopped in Ireland too) In that, I agree with him. It's bloody stupid, if you'll excuse my klatchian. But the rest of the system works quite well.. At the moment we have a huge education export industry, where a huge number of rich Asian families send their children to NZ to get educated, and pay all their fees and stuff. Has the added advantage that their parents send them money for food.. Direct profit to NZ, pretty much. There's gotta be something good in NZ's educators, or this industry wouldn't exist.
