Organising a Con is ok - stress hits major levels when you are getting towards the first day, and the restaurant goes loopy on you, you don't have a slide projector, and the Publicity guy decides that he is not going to talk to you! <sigh> Should be better this year, I'm going to have help doing it. And I'll put in a little forward publicity - if anyone is in the region of Exeter during the first weekend of March come up to the uni and say hi. We're all totally mad there
And I am totally in awe of people who can draw. I can just about do a stick figure, if you don't want it to be too lifelike...

Re: hello hello hello
heh... *waves* hello, I'm Jo (noticed there's already another Jo on here... ).
I'm a mega huge discworld fan.. kinda obviously coz other wise i don't think i'd be here on a discworld forum thingie... that would just be stupid. I often say compltely pointless things like what i just said... wrote.. My fave discworld series is the city watch. Angua is my fave character, closely followed by Vimes.
anyhoo, I'm from the land-of-clouds-and-rain-and-not-much-else (AKA England) and I'm 17. I'm in the second year of my A levels and I'm doing technology, computing and 16th century-ish history. it's soooo much fun *rolls eyes*
aside from discworld, i like anime and draw lots of anime style arty stuff. i've also got a website *claps* which is very fun and stuff.. .actually it's full of junk.. but it's fun junk! so go see it if you have a boring half hour or so to deal with. the link is on the button in my sig saying ILCK.
I like writing stories. I've written part of 2 discworld fan fics, which can be read on fanfiction.net under the name of Jo Bendle.. coz that's my name. i'm also attempting to write an original sotry of great length which could one day be considered a book! yay!
I made those little sprites down in my sig! i'm sooo proud of them! i tihnk they're the first discworld sprites to be made *so proud!* you can go adopt them from my kinda in progress discworld site which really only has the sprites page on right now... the sprites are linked to it.
hmmm.. that's really all i can think of (ALL?!)
so yea, i'll pop my head in form time to time and ramble possibly in a very pointless fashion.
"Rebel
in little ways. Eat spaghetti using only a spoon. Eat steak with your
hands. Hold the door open for manly men. Sing on the elevator."
I'm a 24 year old insanely TP addicted Scandinavian. Other freaky interests include the PC game The Sims, Jazz music, the local pizza delivery boy and sleeping late.
I'm currently rebuying most of the Discworld paperbacks, as I've read the first ones to bits.
My favorite discworld characters..... Binky, Vimes and Nanny Ogg ...
Being a Discworld fan over here is pretty much a lonely buisness, as most ppl just go: "Eh???" when I try to explain what its all about. I have managed to infect a few ppl with the TP bug though and everytime we meet we have to quote Discworld bits and pieces to asure each other that we are not as strange as everybody thinks.

Welcome! Thanks for stopping by!
Hehe, I know how hard it is to find people who actually have read TP. I mean, we just feel it's out duty to them to give them a book (or two...or ten) so that the deprivation of not knowing Discworld is lessened to some degree. However, most of my friends just sort of look at the book, then at me, and then back away.
Also, I have read 5th Elephant to bits (and stains, tears and other such hindrances) They should make books more durable. No matter HOW careful I am, any book gets a bit threadbare after 20 reads or so...
It is hard to explain Pratchett to someone. I've gotten some odd looks. They're hard to read in school too. I'll start laughing and someone will ask why but then they don't understand what's so funny about oh, say the universe being created by an accumilation of random objects (see Eric).

You've got it lucky! I had to share a room in my first year at uni with a girl who didn't think that anything worthwhile had been written post 1900. I did introduce her to Wyrd Sisters on the basis that she would like the Shakespeare references, but past that she turned her nose up at all of my books (not just Pratchett, but Eddings, Asimov, Clarke... <sigh>) Shes not a part of my life any more...
I too have known the joy of laughing out load at Pratchett - usually on the bus. I *love* getting weird looks, but after the first couple of times, I stopped trying to explain it to strangers <grin>

Explaining the impossible
I have given up on explaining Pratchett. My mother was asking us what we wanted to do for Halloween. We had wanted to do Elizabeth Peters, but were prevented because we had no time to find outfits let alone a pith helmet. So we were fighting over characters from our favorite books and finally decided that the most fair thing to do was to do Pratchett. SO- we fought some more and finally decided. THEN my mom starts asking me what we're going to be and I was like..."Uhm..." Then my dad joined in and kept grilling me though I told them they wouldn't understand. Finally I sort of ran off rather than try to make them understand Discworld, Death, the Watch, etc...
And- how can anyone turn up Eddings or Pratchett? Well, maybe those people who 'hate to read'. I get that a lot when I try to recommend books.

Re: Explaining the impossible
Going Death's grandaughter does sound sort of odd, my mom's given up on me so she just smiled and nodded when I said I was going as Angua. My dad loves Pratchett now, although he hasn't gotten far so he doesn't understand the costume ideas either. I wonder how many people we can confuse- that half the fun as going as more obscurem characters.
As long as we're on the topic of Halloween (sort of) any ideas for an Angua costume. I'm planning the collar, but that's really the only distinctive feature she has that I can recall (and no, I WILL NOT dye my hair). Can anyone think of anything else? It has to be pretty basic, but any ideas will be welcome.

Angua
Well... she doesn't really have anything else that marks her out as a werewolf, but there's plenty of stuff you can do in her officer of the watch role- armour and stuff.... a piece of blanket incase you bumb into any bogeymen (try explaining /that/ one).... obviously nothing silver.... you could put an anti-undead kit together to go along with the blanket (a holy water soaked candle?.. some cellary because the bursar couldn't find any steak?...) it might come in handy on hallow's eve
hope that's of slightly more than no help.
I'll expect pictures of the final result so we can laug..... I mean, admire them.

LOL! Yeah...nice ideas. I hope we can put these costumes together.
Haha on the pictures. Well, SPF might...she's gulli- I mean, er-nice. I cannot WAIT to see the looks we get from people! (including my loving parents) We should videotape this...Maybe that's a role for my brother...or he could be someone random. He's too tall for a dwarf tho...We'll have to brainstorm...Oh well, it'll be SO fun! If only I had a Death of Rats to tote around...*sigh* Now that would make it perfect!

I resent that Grim!!!!
We definately need to take pics- hopefully our costumes will resemble something , low budget costumes are never fun (this is why I can't pull off the armor).
I think your brother could pull off a dwarf- he'd need a beard and an axe and definatley a helmet. Hmmm...
I LOVE Halloween!!!

Halloween
I'll never be too old to dress up and get free candy! It's waaay too much fun. Then you have my crazy family who thought it would be fun to go around banging coconuts together and demanding shrubberies in stead of candy and occasionally saying, "I'm not dead yet." WHICH I really wouldn't mind doing, it's just scary that this became the topic of conversation for about ten minutes at the dinner table.
Is anyone else going trick-or-treating? I don't think I'll ever give it up, it's just great! Especially if you have cool costumes. I get a scythe! I'm really happy about that...
(SPF-I doubt my brother would go with the beard thing, but he would be thrilled to carry an axe.)
I will be pleased to take pictures of you! (I could copy them and tack them up over the school! LOL! Okay, so I wouldn't...) But you know how I feel about pictures. Your'e STILL mad about the yearbook, I'll bet...

You're never too old for free candy- hey if my sister could go trick-or-treating in college, I don't see what the problem is here (my mom thinks I'm too old though) and we do have a legit excuse, we're being kind and taking you're brother (it works).
I will always dress up for Halloween, it's sooo much fun! Why can't Pratchett have more good female roles? Cheri's out (uh the beard and height, couldn't do it) and Sybil... yeah, so we're left with Susan and Angua and possible one of Susan's students.

Hi. My names' Kevin, and i'm a 16 year old guy from New Zealand.
To avoid confusion, it's NOT a state of australia (i sometimes have to explain this and it can be embarrasing to the person who is brave enough to ask - think of a canadian being told he's an american or vise versa)
I'm a super huge massive TP fan, as is displayed by the heredness (this only makes sense in my language - aka ME - so d/w) i have nearly all of his books (all the series) with the exception of night watch, which i had to give away as a birthday present, and then couldn't afford to replace.
i'm a socialist athiesist and i seem to be the only one at my school of 2000 (that's big in NZ - please don't laugh) who does a whole lot of "deep" contemplation about a whole lot of useless stuff that we will never need, but are nice to not really know about now.
i also have a lot of trouble talkig to people about TP book, especially DW. My Girlfriend has just about gone mad cause i continue to make references to it, and she has sworn never to read one just on basic principal, but she has agreed to read TLF, just so she can read about the luggage (yay)
i love Leonard of Quirm, and Susan (so cooool - damn, i wish i could do the voice). i also recon Reg Shoe rocks. "they look dangerous, and reg says he doesn't have enough string for all of us"
Unfortunately we don't do halloween in a big way over here so i kinda miss out on all the free candy (bugger)
if u'r looking for Fem characters u could always be one of the "wanna-be witches" from lords and ladies - in the words of Will Smith, they made it look gooood, despite their lack of witchiness.
did i mention i ramble, and also talk about some weird sh*t, just cause i can?
oh well, hello all, and i have only 1 question.
if "all-together-andrews" joins, does he get to do the guild test 7 times?
lol

Do people really think NZ is part of Oz?.... ah, let me guess who: Americans. I had heard that new zealanders don't like being called australian.... I can sympthasize there... I don't like being called english, or british, or a member of the EU... I'm Manx.
If you like Reg, then there's a bit of a treat for you in Night Watch... I guess its on your Christmas list so I won't say any more.
Why don't you try The Last Continent on your gf. She should enjoy it, it includes the luggage and it contains lots of references to your home country
oooh I've just thought of another hallow's eve character.... you could be one of those wanna be humans from CJ... you could wear ordinary clothes, some Vampire teeth and go around complimenting the host on their utterly drab house. Its a bit late for this year but...

HEY! No insulting the creators of this board! (allthough I will admit many Americans are awfully stupid)
It's great to find so many TP fans, they're such difficult books to discuss with people (or even get people to read). Unfortunately I can't say I've read all of them *starts sobbing*, but my xmas list is growing.
Re: Halloween
thanks robcraine, i'd forgotten about luggage in TLC, so i will try and convince my g/f to give it a read. unfortunately i've lent it to a friend, but that does mean that we have one more possible convert on our way :P
unfortunately all my money is going away this cristmas, so nightwatch might be a while off, but i'll remember it to all my friends (if any of u guys can see this - hint hint)
have happy hols

HEY! *delayed reaction* I would not have asked something that stupid...not out loud at least...
That's too bad about having to wait for Night Watch. I'm so impatient that I could barely wait a week. I finally broke down and bought it and there went some more of my college money!
Terry Pratchatt fans are too scarce in the 'lovely' States. However, SPF and I met one at 1/2 Price Books and he randomly started talking about how funny TP was. It was great. Well, I guess it wasn't that random...SPF had just basically screamed, 'OMG! TERRY PRATCHETT BOOKS!' I do not know how to make her lower her voice when she's excited, but I am sure that every TP fan in the state heard.
