You only read Hound...b/c I bought it for you. I should push the rest on you. I have plenty! But- I am already forcing you to read a lot. OH! I finished The Mask and the Sorceress. It wasn't that bad, but it wasn't amazing either.

I do like Sherlock Holmes - although Conan Doyle does get a bit 'smug' in his writing at times. I read the complete collection when I was staying at my cousin's a couple of years ago

Re: sherlock holmes
For some reason I haven't noticed this topic untill now so I'll start with:
I read
Tom Holt
Robert Rankin
Matthew Thomas
Jasper Fforde
who are somewhat similar to terry. The last two are fairly new authors who have only wrote two books each.... but I would definately recommend Fforde.
I also read a fair bit of sci-fi and similar, my bookshelves (brand spanking new ones- I filled a wall with shelves, and was at first a bit worried that I wouldn't have stuff to fill them, but after digging some books out of cupboards, boxes and friends bookshelves, I have surprisingly nearly managed to fill them with books alone. I found a few books I'd forgotten about and am now in the process of re-reading them) include
Douglas Adams (some-one mentioned that they had all his books. I ask them: have you read 'The Salmon of Doubt' and is it any good?)
Tolkein
Stephan Baxter
Peter F Hamilton
Iain (M) Banks
Asimov
Clarke
and much much more.
I think I have read all of the Sherlock Holmes books.... a bookshop in oxford was selling 'classics' for a quid each, and that included a number of compilations. If you like Holmes you should read a story by Poe which basically defined the genre.... I think it was called Murders in the rue morge.

More books...
OKay, I HAVE to add Sean Russell to my book (SPF- you have to show him! But I want to be there!) because I just read The One Kingdom and got hooked. And also got a little mad that the library does not have the second book (which is only out in hardcover) Well, it was more than a little mad...
Gaiman
J.K. Rowling
Tolkien
Margaret Atwood
Agatha Christie (Poirot is my favorite)
Milan Kundera
Peter Høeg

Salmon of Doubt
Salmon of Doubt *is* good, but not for the actual Salmon of Doubt story, which is only about the last quarter of the book, and stops very poignantly. But there is so much other stuff on there, taken off DA's hard drive, including a little Hitchhikers short. And there is a lot of his general ramblings, which gives a great insight into his mind. <sigh> Miss him.
- they might actually be doing a Hitchikers film finally!

Books
I was looking for Fforde at B&N and Amazon and I read the excerpt and it sounded very interesting. Then, all excited, I went to the library. And...it wasn't there. Of course, our library never has any good fantasy books. So I went to the 1/2 price bookstore. Nope, not there! SO I gave up and was debating going to the bookstore and buying it full price when my parents said, very nicely, that I really shouldn't buy so many books there since they're "much more expensive." I'm sort of stuck now until The 1/2 price books get's it's game together. *sigh*
That is my adventure in the world of books. I also have to add Shakespeare to the list. I know not everyone liked it/understands it, but I really like it! Yeah, I'm weird. I offered to lend some to SPF, but she declined with a 'you're crazy' look.

I always give you that "you're crazy" look, since, well, you are. There are a few plays I'd like to read- Macbeth, and one I can't think of the title to since I'm an idiot- they put it on in one of the Cat Who books (I'm sure that will help the people who've never heard of Braun ) and they replced the fairies with martians and were just adding weird stuff. WHY CAN'T I THINK OF IT?!!! Oh well.
One of my friends was trying to get me to start the Sword of Truth series- anyone heard of it?

Fforde
I remember my student days (all of three months ago) when I couldn't afford stuff. It's great having real money and being able to fill up my bookshelves with things I've been meaning to buy for some time.
I've just re-read both fforde's books and once again I can't recommend them enough... put it at the top of your christmas list (well... after any pratchett you don't have)... can't wait for his third, but that's not out 'till next summer If you want more of a taster of his works he has an great website... hang on... thursdaynext.com/ even the adverts are funny.

Great. Now I REALLY want to read them! LOL! *sigh* I need a life! Maybe I need a new hobby...(yeah right)
And the link isn't working too. Further evidence that the world is conspiring against me. But that's okay because I am in a good mood since I just watched Monty Python and you CAN'T be bummed out after that. (This has become a big inside joke...just smile and nod)

Just kidding! The link decided to work today! How nice! *wanders off*
Wow, Halloween is over and I am hopeful that I won't lose any fingers from frostbite. Yeah, it was sorta cold. BUT, we made fools of ourselves and no one knew what the hell were. However, though my feet hurt something awful and I couldn't feel my fingers- it was SO worth all the trouble!
You may get pictures unless I am able to destroy them. Unfortunately, SPF has the camera. It would be difficult to get away from her.
On the Jasper Fforde note, I finally appropriated The Eyre Affair and loved it very much. Downside- Lost in a Good Book is coming to the US in HARDCOVER March 2003. I have already screamed enough about this and will not waste my breath now. Needless to say, I am planning on spending a tidy sum to ship it from England. I cannot stand knowing that there IS a second book and people have already read it and I can't get it pretty much until those lucky people get the THIRD book. Anyways, as long as my parents don't know it's from oversees they might not have a fit.

Glad you had a good halloween.... I was in the middle of nowhere on Thursday, so I missed all the Hop Tu Naa-ers.
Speaking of Thusday.... if you really want to buy Lost in a Good Book (nice link, hey?) from the UK, the best price I can see is $7.49 +$4.49 p&p. That's from bookshop.blackwell.com/ .... I found that price from www.addall.com who are an excellent book price comparison site thingy, who I usually use if I'm ordering online.
If you decide to wait for the US version, then possibly good news is that in the UK the paperback was published a week after the hardback. I don't know if it'll be the same in the US.
Amazon claim that Night Watch should arrive tomorrow, and luckily I got my fireworks out of the way tonight, so the book will be able to have my undivided attention once I come home from work.

Very nice pun ^_^
We're going to be insane and order it from England along with The Eyre Affair in paperback. I cannot wait until March to get it in the US (the paperback would not be coming out until quite a while later also), but, good news about March is Fforde's US tour to promote his books. AND he is coming to WI, so we are quite thrilled. I made SPF read the Eyre Affair (I pretty much shoved it in her face) and she likes it also. Perhaps when he becomes better known his books will come out here earlier!
I cannot wait to get my hands on Night Watch. I might have to go and buy it in hardcover since the library doesn't have it yet (curse them).

Fabulous, fabulous book! I want the next one!!!! I don't think I'll ever be able to see "The Raven" the same way ever again. It's not fair that we don't get them here right away. *pouts*
re sherlock holmes
Oh my golly gosh, you've also read Beekeeper's Apprentice! You know there's three more in that series?
It's so rare to find another Holmes fan.
If you like Vimes' Ankh Morpork, try Bernard Cornwell's Gallows Thief. It's very The Shades.
I like so many authors! JT Edson, CS Forester, David Eddings, Connie Willis, Cornwell obviously, I went through a stage of reading Agatha Christie, Dudley Pope, Alexander Kent, though I'm rather off his newer stuff, Robin Hobb....er, I'd better stop here...
