JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
In the dec.- jan. contest it deemed that a mini dec. contest with a snow theme would be used and that a jan. - feb. water contest will be the theme. There is no size limit or limits on what materials will be used. From puddles to rivers to ports and beach heads. What ever you can come up with is ok doesn't even have to be clear water could be muddy or polluted or flowing red with blood. WIPS and a declaration of entry is all you need to get started. I expect many entries this time if not I will hunt you down and give you 10 lashings with a carbon fiber rod. Well I won't realy but I will be disapointed. Good luck and have fun.
Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
I'm going to make a river. I figured making a contest about water would be a good motivation to make one, since I've wanted one for a while.
Mine will be with a masonite base and divided into section for storage/setup. I will probably make a ford in there and a place to connect a bridge easily.
Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
I'm going to make one, but no WIPs yet since I haven't finished (started really) my snow project (no for the comp, I didn't think of it int time).
Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
So I'm bored as I wait for glue to dry so I can add another coat. Added a few more WIPs one is my felt job and the other is my glue coat. I think I watered it down a little to much but ohwell.
Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
Cool! I was expecting you'd add your tower and bridge to the river. I joined too late for the bridge contest but I do have one built. I'll ensure that a couple parts of the river will be narrow enough to span.
Mine is going to be scale-independant so it can work with 28mm and Battletech in either my desert or woodlands terrain. That means no skeletons, sunken machinery (I wanted to put a Ford in the river) or anything that would look strange next to something on a different scale.
I'm going to jump in on this one with some sewer/dungeon modules where a couple of teams of 'Victorian' hunters can go up against an infestation of Ratmen (Space Hulk style).
I plan to use Hirst Arts Fieldstone Dungeon blocks and Woodland Scenics EZ water. I'm thinking GW Skaven for the rats and was thinking of Empire Militia for the 'Victorians' but having just discovered Copplestone Castings I'm reconsidering that. Details i.e. pipes, gratings, rusty bicycles, will depend on what I can find.
Chances of being completely finished by the end of Feb are about zero but hopefully I'll have a couple of enterable sections by then.
Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
I'll join in. First time posting on this board too that I know of.
I started planning this river for an addition to a "wood" fort I was building, and the timing works out perfectly for this contest.
I forgot to take pictures of the first few steps, but here are some pictures of the river after the foam has been cut down, and the rocks / sand glued on and then it received a basecoat of brown. Please don't mind the cluttered workroom
A closeup of the unpainted bridge that is going to accompany this river.
Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
Wow, those are big and I can't seem to edit.
If someone wants to delete that post, I'll redo it here with links instead of pics.

Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
Finally got the next set off of "my" camera (wife has been hogging her digital camera that I gave her for Christmas and wouldn't share it, haha). The river is 4ft long, and the base is 12" wide (with the actual river varying in size), and the river depth varying as well between 1/4" and 1" at different points.
I am making the bridge system modular and removable so that I can put no in either an intact bridge or a broken down bridge that has collapsed into the river (haven't done any of the collapsed bridge yet).
I have only done base flocking and a basic paint. Got lots more to do still, including pour the resin. This is my absolute 2nd piece of terrain (hill fort it is matching was the first I started) that I have started (haven't finished any yet) that wasn't just all Hirst Art's bricks, so go easy on me.
Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
This is totally O.T., but I just wanted to tell Charger he rocks for doing a "Silent Hill" terrain piece. I'm a big fan of the games too, and that made me feel all warm inside, like something red and unidentifiable wrapped in old chamois and left to be discovered in a corner...
Dangit, now I'm thinking about 25mm Closers and Pyramid-Heads.
Re: Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
Ok, so here is my project. My thoughts were a small modular section that I can slide adjacent to other pieces to make a table.
I've started out with this floor design. My idea is a run down shack in a swampy area with a dock that gets over the marsh to the building.
I don't have much for materials right now so I'm making most of my pieces from popsicle sticks.
Here are a few shots of the docking part that has now a basic coat of paint. I'll need to detail it to look like wood.
Re: Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
Hmmm, I think I'd like to enter, however, I have Several concerns.
First off, while I would like to do A water-based prject, I can't figure out what I could do, I mean, I can't exactly put a fresh lake into an industrial zone (I did consider a sludge-lake, but I don't think it would get much play, and its a bit much work right now,) however what about a tea-can tank of sludge and an acompanying little bunker with closed tanks on top? or is that too far from the subject matter?
Secondly, I haven't all the required materials for said project (namely primer and possibly my 'sludge' (I'd be using mostly min-wax varnish, built up in thin layers) Aswell I'm also in need of more copper fittings for barrels, I'm out of those and may not have the chance to get more in time.
Thirdly, it's exam week, and I may have little time to work on it, and then procrastinate away the rest of my time afterward.
Fourthly, I tend to build things slowly, adding things as I find "just the right thing" Building something start-to-finish within a certain time frame might be chalenging for me.
Fifthly, I may not be able to take pictures of my entry (assuming I finish it.) As I don't think I have access to a digital camera, though I may be able to borrow one.
So I suppose if my entry is valid, and everything goes well, you may see me complete this, in fact, I'll go work on it quite soon.
Re: Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
I'm not running the competition but to me the point of the water theme is to see how different people tackle the problem of modelling water. Thus I would say that the entry should have visible 'water' i.e. if you're talking about an enclosed water tank it won't meet the criteria.
Reserviors are a very common feature on industrial sites as the water is used in cooling and hearing systems.
As for your other issues, well if it isn't finished on time you won't be able to enter it and the same applies if you can't photograph it. Note that you also need to post at least one set of in progress shots.
Re: Re: JAN. - FEB. WATER CONTEST
Thanks, I'll let you all know if I'm in or not soon (as the larger tank is open-topped and water/sludge would be clearly visible.)
