Chapter 6 "The Pact" by Jennie Chapter 6 The night club was bustling which contrasted greatly with Pacey's lethargic mood. He had just finished his second tequila shot and was determined to get Joey off his mind. It had been at least three weeks since he was last out dancing and Pacey had to admit that he missed it. The excitement, dancing, women, and alcohol always guaranteed him a good time. Just then Conner reappeared with what had to be close to six women hanging all over him, acting as his retinue. "Hey Pacey, my man! I made some friends." "Hey Conner! Where are you kidnapping these lovely ladies to?" Pacey smiled a genuine grin. Conner always had a talent for making Pacey enjoy himself. "Well the first stop on the patented 'Conner Joyride' is straight to the dance floor." He turns and leads the way to the center of the packed crowd. One of Conner's entourage, a tall and busty blonde dressed in a small turquoise dress, grabbed Pacey by the front of his trademark, tacky Hawaiian shirt and dragged him out to Conner and his ladies. The night grew old fast and before Pacey knew it, it was two am. As he stumbled drunkenly towards the exit he spotted his friend sitting at the bar with yet another drink. Pacey shook his head and sauntered over to Conner. "What are you trying to do? Kill yourself?" "Nope," Conner slurred, "It's my new philosophy. 'The best way to prevent a hangover is to stay drunk.'" "Okay Conster. Let's go home before we pass out." Pacey led a mildly protesting Conner out the door and hailed a cab. After the cab sped off, Pacey grabbed his best friend right at the elbow and supported him the best he could with his mind swirling. After walking up the four flights of stairs and taking seven brakes, they had talked about a myriad of topics from baseball and incurable diseases to the pros and cons of rice. That's what Pacey loved about doing things with Conner. They could take the lamest topic and have a real conversation about it. It probably didn't hurt that they were drunk at the moment either. Pacey felt that they could talk about anything. He smiled at the thought and opened Conner's door which was two down from his. "Pacey?" "Yeah," Pacey replied as he switched on the lights. "Are you gonna hook up with that Joey chick?" Pacey's smile faded and thought, 'Well, we can talk about almost anything.' "No, Conner, she obviously wanted to disappear. I don't want to force myself back into her life." Pacey helped Conner to the bed and turned to leave. "You never know, Pace. She could have a really good reason for not getting a hold of you." And then Conner passed out. *** Jen sat on the porch in her grandmother's old rocking chair, gazing out into the trees. She loved it here. It was so peaceful and quiet. She carefully leaned over and grabbed her camera from the porch floor. Spotting a doe grazing not far off she snapped a couple of quick shots before a loud engine could be heard making it's way up the driveway. She sighed as she saw the deer sprint into the shelter of the trees. Slowly Jen stood up and cautiously walked around the house along the wraparound porch knowing who it was. "I couldn't find any pineapples, sorry honey." The man said as he stepped out of the car, reaching for the bags of groceries in the back seat. He straightened to his full height of 6'4" and kissed Jen on the forehead as he walked into the house. "It's okay Jack, I understand. The local food store here isn't exactly Ralph's or anything." Jen smiled, easing her way into the kitchen after her friend. "So did you talk to everyone? Did you get a hold of Joey?" Jen's face faltered so fast that Jack almost didn't catch it. "It's okay sweetie… I'm sure there's a good reason for her scarcity. She is a famous movie star now. Her manager can't believe just anyone who calls saying they are old friends of Joey's, you know." Jen sighed, "I know… I just don't understand why she hasn't called any of us." Jen knew they had been over this many times before but she couldn't help but miss her friend and worry. "Well," Jack said happily, trying to change the subject, "Did you get a hold of Andie?" "Yes, she's arriving early tomorrow morning. She and Jake broke up though, so she's coming alone." "Is she okay?" Jack's voice turned from happy to worried quickly. "Yes, she broke it off. Something about him smothering her or something." "Well that's good, I think. How about Dawson and Pacey?" Jen noticed that he purposely left out Henry from his questioning. "It's okay Jack. You can say his name, I'm fine. Dawson should be here around eleven and Pacey is bringing a friend and they should be here by noon. And Henry," she paused after stressing his name, "is bringing his girlfriend and should be here around four." Jack couldn't help but worry about his best friend. She was overly emotional at the moment and it had only been a year since their breakup. "Whatever you say Goldielocks." Jen rolled her eyes. She hated that nickname. "What are you waiting for you bum! There are more groceries in the car you know!" She laughed and tried desperately to get out of the room before Jack caught her but in her current condition it was extremely difficult. Jack grabbed her and pulled her to him gently tickling her sides causing her to laugh hysterically. Soon Jack joined in as she struggled in vain to get away. *** Joey was sitting at the edge of her bed. She had a splitting headache. She just got home from interviews for two different magazines neither which she could remember the names of. Four days ago she had sent her car to Boston and now all she had to do was summon up enough courage to leave Daniel. She knew that he was fucking his secretary but she still was apprehensive to leave him. She didn't understand why. She was always so strong when she was a teen. 'Headstrong' was what Bessie would call her. "What happened to me?" she questioned aloud to the empty room comforted by the thought that no one could answer her. She knew that she wouldn't like what she heard. |

Chapter 7 Hey, glad you found it. Maybe it's more than the two of you reading this. You know how lurkers can be As you can see the spacing is a little off on this. If it's a problem just let me know and I'll fix it up when I have time. The Pact by Jennie Andie felt panicked. ‘What’s new.’ She thought to herself. A week ago she broke up with her long-time boyfriend, Jake. That seems normal enough but the reason she did it gave her chills to even think about it. She hadn't seen Pacey since last year at the manor and only talked to him once around Christmas so she didn’t understand where these feelings were stemming from. Out of the blue the dreams started to torment her. Dreams of the times she and Pacey were happy together and in love. Sometimes they would even be images of the future with her pregnant and him by her side. It’s not that she thought that she could get back together with him instantly, she just felt like she should keep her options open. Plus she felt guilty as hell for stringing Jake along. Patient, understanding, loving Jake whom she had never loved to begin with. So now as she's driving the familiar road from Capeside to the Manor, she felt an overwhelming urge to turn around. Andie didn’t want to see Pacey. What if he still was distant towards her? She didn’t think she could handle that. They had barely pieced their friendship together and now she was going to ruin the whole thing by being stupid. All because of some silly dreams. “Well,” she thought aloud, “I've already let them take my boyfriend away, I'm not going to let them take a good friend away also.” She leaned over and reached into her purse that was settled in the passenger seat of her old and beat up car. When her hand touched the bottle she grasped it and poured two yellow-tinged pills into the palm of her hand. Swallowing them fast with the help of her bottled water, she sighed trying to hold back her tears. She was determined that she would not be the cause of a ruined vacation. *~*~*~*~* It was eleven thirty and Pacey was exhausted from driving. He looked over at Conner sleeping in the passenger seat enviously. They were almost there and Pacey could feel himself starting to relax. As much as he loved the hospital and the kids, he always felt so much better when he was outside of New York. “Are we there yet?” Conner whined as he stirred awake. “Not yet.” Pacey chuckled. “It’s your turn to drive, I wanna look at the scenery.” “Awww… do I hafta?” Conner made a face that showed his disgust at the thought of opening his eyes. Pacey pulled over on the deserted country road and nodded even though Conner couldn’t see. Fifteen minutes later then arrived at the huge Manor. “This is AWESOME!!” A now fully awake Conner exclaimed. “Yes, that it is. Now don’t you be acting like your normal horn-dog self you hear? That’s my job here and I will not let you be the one to steal all my glory!” “Whatever you say….” His voice trailed off when he spotted some people walking out onto the porch. “Pacey!!” A waddling Jen screamed. “Oh, Jen I missed you so much!” Pacey gently hugged her not wanting to hurt her. “How’s the baby?” He asked as he put a hand on her larger-than-normal stomach. “Just fine thank you very much. Although I can't wait for it to come out. I'm tired of being so slow. It sucks.” Pacey smiled and quietly asked, “So you gonna finally tell me who the father is?” Jen secretly grinned and shook her head. Noticing Conner off to the side she smiled warmly and brought him in for a hug. “You must be Conner! It’s so good to finally meet you! I'm Jen.” After introductions were made when Jack, Andy and Dawson stepped down off the veranda, Pacey and Conner grabbed their bags and headed inside. “It’s good to be back.” Pacey whispered. *~*~*~*~* It was after dinner and the group was sitting outside around the fire like they did so many years before. “So Lindsay, how did you meet Henry?” Jack was trying his hardest to bring her into the group. Since she and Henry arrived she had said a total of two words. “Um, well see I'm, like, a cheerleader, and um, he's a football player.” Lindsay looked around the group and saw confused expressions. “I cheer for him,” she said simply as if that made their meeting clearer. “Actually, she was just so cute with her little uniform on that I just had to ask her out. We hit it off perfectly and have been exclusive now for almost a month and a half.” Henry smiled lovingly at Lindsay and kissed her on the nose. “Put me out of my misery now, please,” muttered Jen under her breath so no one would hear. “Oh, Jen just look how cute they are,” Pacey glanced over at them as he said this and almost gagged when he saw that Lindsay was now in Henry’s lap nibbling on his ear. “What, are you jealous? Cause if you are, I have a lap right here with your name on it.” He stole another look at the couple. “And an ear for you to suck on as well,” he added with a sly grin. “In your dreams Witter.” “Every night. Even seven months pregnant, you still get my blood pumping, if you know what I mean.” Pacey raised his eyebrows suggestively. “If I give you a cookie will you go away?” “I’ll go away on one condition.” “Okay, I'm desperate but I WILL NOT do anything sexual with you. No ifs, ands, or buts about it mister.” Pacey smiled even bigger and Jen knew at that moment that she was in trouble. “I will not say anything suggestive, I will not crawl into your bed in the middle of the night hoping to score, or even grope you for the rest of the trip if you answer one question.” He paused, probably to add suspense Jen mused, and then said, “Tell me who the father of you baby is.” Jen sighed. “No.” “Okay then you are gonna have to deal with horny Witter for the next two weeks…” He trailed off knowing that she wanted to tell someone anyway. “Fine.” Jen hissed, looking around at the others who were off in their own little worlds. Lindsay and Henry were passionately making out on one side of the fire, while Andie, Dawson, Conner, and Jack were discussing the plans for the next day which from what she could hear, mainly consisted of stocking up on fireworks for the Fourth of July which was in four days. Jen leaned over and quickly whispered something in Pacey's ear. “What was that? Come on it can't be that bad, just tell me.” “It’s Jack okay?” She said it softly Pacey wasn’t sure he heard right. “What?” he whispered back. “You mean our Jack? GAY Jack?” Jen silently nodded but kept her mouth shut. “When? Well I guess I know when. How? Why? Jack?” Pacey was so confused. That was the last person in the entire world that he expected it to be. He thought it was kinda funny. He smiled and looked at Jen. She looked embarrassed and relieved all at the same time, if that was possible. Then he realized that it wasn’t just funny, it was damn hilarious! He started to laugh and soon Jen was giggling with him and before they could control themselves they both were laughing hysterically while the others looked at them in wonder. *~*~*~*~* Joey was all packed and had her luggage in the airport shuttle downstairs when Daniel came home. She had written a note for him and was hoping to leave without seeing him at all, but now she would have to face him. He stormed into the kitchen where she was standing holding the note. “Where are you going?!?!” He drunkenly screamed. “I'm going to see my family, my friends.” She said with fake confidence. “No you are not. We have another interview tomorrow and then the next day you are going to a meeting about that new movie that you're going to do.” He stepped close to her and grabbed her wrist. Joey flinched and took a deep breath before she pulled away and tried to step around him. He stopped her by harshly squeezing her upper arm and throwing her to the ground. She was dazed but not completely fazed. All she wanted was to get out so she started to crawl to the door as Daniel picked up the letter that she was going to leave him. He quickly scanned the letter and looked up in rage. “YOU'RE LEAVING ME!? How dare you leave me after all I have done for you! I made you! You’re nothing without me!” He leaned over and picked Joey up by her hair and slammed her against the wall. “No one leaves me!!” He yelled as he narrowed in on Joey again before she could escape. *~*~*~*~* Jack was getting ready for bed. Everyone else had pretty much collapsed around eleven because of all the traveling that they did that day. It was now around eleven thirty, much earlier than he was used to going to sleep but he had nothing else to do. So he silently dressed in some basketball shorts and an old t-shirt and then went to check on Jen and the baby. He remembered that night clearly even though he was drunk out of his mind. He wondered why that was but he couldn’t explain it. He and Jen were having a night out on the town to get her mind off of Henry. They had been apart for almost three months and Jen was still sulking about it. So they went out drinking and then one thing led to another when they got back to her apartment. They never tried to explain what happened. They just acted like it never happened until Jen found out that she was pregnant a month later. Even then they simply accepted it and Jack moved in with Jen to help take care of her and the baby. They were still best friends, not lovers in the least, and they wanted to raise this child together. Jack was never more sure about anything as he was about this. He was excited. ‘I’m gonna be a daddy!’ He thought to himself. When he reached Jen’s bedroom he knocked quietly and then opened the door. He peeked in enough to make sure that Jen was sleeping soundly and that she had a glass of water beside the bed. He walked in and covered her up more and kissed her on the forehead before leaving and closing the door behind him. Now he was ready to go to sleep. *~*~*~*~* Joey cried out again as Daniel kicked her in the stomach. She was lying down in a fetal position trying to stop the brunt of the kicks but she was getting tired of trying. Just then the buzzer rang downstairs. The second Daniel looked away, Joey quickly jumped up ignoring the throbbing pain shooting through her stomach and sides, and lunged at the chair next to her. She grabbed the chair and swung it so it hit Daniel squarely in the back and sent him sprawling. She dropped the chair and ran out, plundering around for a jacket and then ran outside trying to cover up her badly bleeding face. *~*~*~*~* After an uneventful five hour flight, she arrived in New York at one am. She pulled her cloak around her face even more and hurried to her waiting car with her luggage in tow. Finding her convertible she shoved her things into the back and jumped in, wanting to get away as soon as possible. She knew that he couldn’t have followed her here but she knew she wouldn’t feel better until she was away from here and in the country-side. After an hour drive she came up to the long driveway. She was so tired she could barely get out of the car but she dragged herself up and prayed that they didn’t lock the door. Finding it open, she thanked God for small miracles, and quietly walked upstairs and into her bedroom. She didn’t want to wake anyone up before she could clean herself up. She knew she looked horrible. She didn’t want anyone to know what had happened. Finding her bed in the dark, she told herself that she would get into the shower the next morning before anyone even knew she was there. Satisfied that she was safe, she tore her coat off, groaning quietly from the movement and then drifted off to sleep. Edited by: TrueLoveFic at: 4/5/03 5:53:02 pm |

Chapter 8
Chapter 8
by Jenni *~*~*~*~* Pacey rolled over in his bed trying desperately to hold on to sleep, but it slipping away fast. Aggravated, he opened his eyes to view the dimly lit room and peeked at the clock. “5:30!” Pacey groaned and got up to take a shower. After his soothing, hot shower, he went downstairs and made a pot of coffee. Smelling the aroma alone was enough to wake him up fully and so he looked around for something to do. ‘Well, I could go for a walk in the woods…’ he thought to himself, but quickly dismissed the idea. Instead he chose to go back upstairs. He wandered aimlessly but ended up where he always ended up. Outside of Joey’s room. Pacey took a deep breath. He had to admit he was worried as hell about her. It wasn’t like Joey to just forget her friends like this. He didn’t know what was wrong but he knew for sure that there WAS a problem. He closed his eyes and wished that she was in the room. He raised his hand to the closed door and placed his palm flat against it. He wished that when he opened the door she would be laying on her bed just like she had so many years before. But he knew this wasn’t possible. Quietly he opened the door but before he could take a step inside, he saw her. He knew she was just a fragment of his imagination but she looked so real. Joey was laying on her side, her back to him dressed in a flowing cotton sundress with her rich brown hair flowing on the pillow behind her. Pacey stood there staring not wanting to look away and lose this vision. If he were to glance away the spell would be broken. *~*~*~*~* Dawson looked at the clock which read 6:15. “Oh well, I might as well get this day started.” He got up, snatched up his shower stuff and clothes and stepped out into the hall. Yawning he stretched as best he could without dropping his things and looked up to see Pacey standing in Joey’s doorway. Dawson shook his head. “You know, staring in there isn't going to make her magically appear.” Dawson went to walk into the bathroom but noticed that Pacey didn’t even seem to acknowledge him. Dropping his stuff Dawson walked over to see if Pacey was alright. “Pace, you okay?” Wanting to see what Pacey was staring at he peered into the room. “Holy shit! Jo!?” *~*~*~*~* All Pacey wanted was for Dawson to go away. He wanted to stay in this dream world a little longer, but Dawson being Dawson, wanted to make sure he was okay. “Holy shit! Jo!?” Dawson exclaimed. Pacey was shocked that he saw her too and then it hit him. It really WAS Joey. “Oh my God…” Pacey whispered. Joey started to stir and rolled slightly on her back exposing her arm and face to the two men who gasped at the sight. Pacey rushed forward and felt tears forming when he saw the massive bruises covering Joey’s cheek and arms. Slowly she blinked and Pacey saw her eyes focus. “Pacey?” she asked in a small voice. “Jo, honey are you alright?” Pacey’s heart broke when she just stared at him with wide, innocent eyes. Cautiously, she nodded her head. “Good. Dawson,” he said, his eyes never leaving Joey's, “could you run into my room, grad my doctor’s bag and take it downstairs? Also get a bowl and fill it with warm water and find a clean washcloth.” Pacey noticed out of the corner of his eye that Dawson hadn't moved yet. Only then did he look away from Joey's warm but scared brown eyes. “Dawson. Please go now.” He said breaking the trance Dawson seemed to be in. Dawson dumbly nodded and hurried to Pacey's room. “Joey, sweetie, what happened?” Pacey had never been so worried in his entire life. Not even when Andie was at her worst did he worry about her like he was right now. He was used to the ‘I have a witty comeback for everything’ Joey and he couldn’t find her right now. Joey broke the connection with his eyes and Pacey was forced back into reality. “Joey, look at me.” Pacey felt a stubborn tear fall silently down his cheek. “Nothing,” she whispered. Pacey knew that she didn’t want to talk about and he remembered that Joey was one of the most stubborn people he knew. She would talk about it when she was ready to. “Whatever happened to you, I won't let it happen again, I promise.” “I know.” “Good. Can you walk?” She nodded and moved to stand up, wincing. He helped her the best that he could without actually carrying her down the flights of stairs. Once they reach the kitchen, they find a nervous Dawson pacing. Pacey leads her to a chair and picks up the washcloth and gingerly begins to clean the dried blood from her face. “Hi Dawson.” Pacey can tell that she is embarrassed. “Hey Jo. I missed you.” Dawson lovingly replies. Joey nods again and focuses on Pacey. “Sweetie, I need to examine you to make sure that there are no other injuries okay?” Pacey tried to sound confident and in charge but in reality he felt as if he would faint from being so close to Joey like he was. Joey smiled crookedly and looked down at Pacey's bag which has the inscription ‘P. Witter’ on it. “Pacey Witter, a doctor, what is this world coming to?” Pacey smiled brightly, happy to see even a figment of Joey’s old personality. “Joey Potter, a sex symbol, what is this world coming to?” They smile at each other. “I missed you Pace.” “I missed you more…. You hurt anywhere else?” For a split second there before he changed the subject, he almost kissed Joey. He mentally kicked himself for even thinking that. He she is badly bruised and in pain and all Pacey can think about is kissing her. Joey looked down when he asked that question, obviously avoiding his gaze. “Joey, I will find whether you show me or not. I only want to help you.” Joey nods again and looks at Dawson. Pacey sees this. “Hey, D-man, why don’t you go take your shower now. We can all catch up over breakfast. Besides you smell like the fish we had last night for dinner.” He smiles brightly. “Sure. I'll be right back down, okay Jo?” “Go.” Joey says. Dawson hesitantly leaves. “Thank you,” she quietly says. “Anytime…. Jo? Show me.” Joey closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. The she stands up and turns carefully around. “Can you unzip me?” she shyly asks. Pacey could not believe she just said that. Straightening up he reaches out to the back of her dress. He notices his hand is shaking profusely and he realizes he's nervous as hell. Finally getting the dress unzipped, she turns back around and pushes the dress off of her shoulders. She is clad only in a white lace demi-bra and matching white lace panties with her dress pooled around her feet. Pacey was in complete awe of her beauty until hi gaze rests on the reason she undressed for him, the bruise. It’s about six inches around and covers her right side and stomach. He gulps trying desperately to keep his emotions in check. His eyes find their way back up to hers. *~*~*~*~* Joey didn’t know what to make of the emotions in his eyes. She saw so many: Sympathy, revolt, fear, rage. She wanted to say something to him but she couldn’t think of anything. “Jo, who did this to you… who would do something like this? I'll kill them. Who was it? I'll KILL them!” Jo could feel his anger but that was the last thing that she wanted. All she wanted to do was forget about the whole thing. Silently she reached out and grasped Pacey's clenched fist. Carefully opening it up she places it on her un-bruised cheek. She can see the confusion in his face as he tries to comprehend what she is doing. “Please, Pacey don’t.” He sighs and instantly calms down. His eyes focus on some invisible spot on the tile floor as he takes a deep breath. Tentatively, he kneeled down and began to examine the extent of the bruise. *~*~*~*~* Pacey could hear the whispers of concern as he walked downstairs. He walked straight to the foyer where he knew everyone was. When he walked in Dawson, Jen, and Jack all jump up at the same time. Looking around from face to face he sees everyone with concern written all over them. Well except for Lindsay but she probably didn’t even comprehend what was going on. “Well Doctor, how's the patient?” Conner cracks trying to lighten up the mood. Pacey considered making it sound not quite as bad as it was but who was he kidding. They were going to see it for themselves so they might as well be prepared for it. “I'm going to be blunt here. Someone beat her up something awful. She has some cuts and bruising on her left cheek, a deep cut on the back of her head, bruises along both her arms and…” he stopped, closed his eyes and took a long, deep breath before continuing. “Whoever did this to her, must’ve kicked her a few times in the ribs because of the massive abrasion and I think that she may even have a couple of fractured ribs.” “So you don’t know who did this to her?” Jen shuddered as Jack pulled her tightly to him. “No idea. She refuses to talk about it. My advice is to act normal.” He gazes at Conner, “Well as normal as possible. She's really embarrassed more than anything right now. *~*~*~*~* Andie watched Pacey carefully, reveling in his soft, caring eyes and observing his lips as he spoke. She wondered if his kisses would be the same as they were years ago. She always loved the feel of his lips needingly devouring her mouth. Pacey made eye contact with her at that exact moment and Andie blushed. ‘I wonder if he knows what I'm thinking,’ she thought to herself. “I'm going to start making breakfast. Pacey would you like to help me?” Andie asked as sweetly as she possibly could. “Um, I'm sure someone else would love to help you. I really should get ready for when Joey gets out of the shower.” ‘Damn!’ Andie thought. “Okay!” she said, a little too cheerfully. “I’ll help you Andie.” Jen said and walked past Andie and into the kitchen. Andie looked back at Pacey before she exited, in a last attempt to… ‘To what?’ she asked herself. ‘To flirt? To watch? To hope?’ Ashamed of herself, she hurried into the kitchen after Jen, and downed two more pills. To be continued... Edited by: TrueLoveFic at: 4/11/03 4:34:58 pm |

Chapter 9 *~*~*~*~* Joey stepped delicately out of the shower. She felt ten times better than she had before but she knew that would change when she went downstairs. She desperately wanted to see her friends and make things normal again but she didn’t know what to expect. Pacey and Dawson were great so far, especially Pacey. The minute she saw him she knew that he had grown up. Not just physically, even though that was quite impressive, but emotionally. She could tell that he had matured well beyond what she had expected. Reaching down, she pulled out some clothes from the small bag she had managed to grab the night before. Pulling the clothes over her still-damp body, she looked down at herself. She was wearing some navy blue sweat pants cut into loose shorts and a black sports bra. These were the clothes that she wore to her kickboxing classes. ‘Kickboxing!’ she thought, aggravated. She had needed to get into shape for the movie she was working on and agreed to take kickboxing classes. She also thought that it would give her the necessary courage to stand up to Daniel the next time that he tried to touch her. ‘What a joke.’ When she was anywhere away from Daniel she was confident and strong. The second that Daniel got near her, she clamed up and took whatever he dealt her. Seeing her stomach, she snatched a ratty t-shirt and threw it on. Joey then brushed her hair, careful of the cut on the back of her head, and pulled her long hair up into a loose ponytail. She tried to leave the bathroom directly after, purposely avoiding the mirror, but the temptation was too great. She was not a vain person but she also knew that she looked like crap. She reasoned that she just didn’t want to scare anyone more than needed. She wiped the fog off of the mirror and peeked at herself. Trying hard to contain her tears, Joey deliberately pulled out her makeup bag and painstakingly tried to eliminate the dark circles that seemed to have permanently formed under her eyes. She knew that there was nothing that could be done about the huge bruise that covered her cheek or the cuts that laced it. She sighed, something that was becoming a common practice of hers, and applied a light lip-gloss before preparing herself for the trip downstairs. Closing her eyes and leaning against the closed bathroom door, the image of Pacey popped into her head. Slightly smiling she remembered how good he looked. He had been dressed in khakis and a semi-tight white t-shirt that enhanced his muscles underneath, conforming to every bulge. Slightly aghast with herself, Joey opened her eyes and scolded herself. “It’s JUST Pacey.” She told the empty room before she left. Joey reached the bottom of the steps and followed the laughing voices into the foyer next to the kitchen. As she walked in, the voices died down and she heard a few partially contained gasps. Joey tried to think of something witty to say but nothing came to her. ‘Wow, that’s got to be a first!’ she thought. “Hi everyone…” she trailed off. “Morning Joey!” came a bright and cheery voice from the kitchen doorway. Joey smiled as brightly as her bruise would let her and faced Jen. “Hi Jen… Oh my God! When are you due!!” “September 15th. I missed you, you know.” Jen pulled Joey into a careful hug. Joey wasn’t sure if Jen was being careful for herself or for Joey. “I missed you all more than you'll ever know.” Joey said finding Pacey's eyes. Tears started forming in her eyes, which did not go unnoticed by Pacey. She immediately started to feel embarrassed again. “So, Jo, I need to, uh, finish.” He stammered trying to change the subject. “We’ll leave you two alone then,” Jack said and started ushering everyone towards the kitchen. “That’s okay Jack.” Joey said as she pulled him in for a hug. “Just make sure that you guys don’t look at it. We wouldn’t want you ruining your appetites! Jen would kill me if you guys didn’t eat her cooking.” “Okay Jo, I'm ready when you are,” Pacey called from the edge of the room. Joey slowly walked over and pulled her shirt off. She could hear cries of horror and sympathy coming from her friends to her right. Uncomfortable, she wished she had let them leave. Instead of saying anything, she focused on Pacey's hands, which were holding some bandages. “That’s awesome! Hey Pace, did you notice the pigmentation here?” a man she didn’t know exclaimed. Looking up with cold eyes, Joey said in a controlled voice, “I'm sorry you must be mistaken. I don’t let Neanderthals touch me.” “Damn, down girl! Well, I guess it’s a good thing that I'm not one isn't it. I happen to be a very sophisticated individual.” But before Joey could say anything he continued, “Man, Pace, you were right! She is an Ice Queen,” he retorted. “You told him that I was an Ice Queen?” Joey said in mock-shock. “And a prude.” Pacey added. “Well—what's your name?” Joey said to the man as Pacey started to wrap the bandages around her waist. “Conner Barret, future MD at your service,” he smoothly replied with a low bow. “Well Conner, I feel that since I, being Pacey's friend for twenty years, I should inform you that he is a slut who likes his women old enough to be his mother.” Pacey finished wrapping her midriff and grinned up at her. “Is she referring to that English teacher that you did? I mean had? I mean, well you know what I mean.” Pacey stood up and nodded. Conner gave him a high-five. “Alright Pace-man! So it is true!” “AHHGGG! Boys!” Joey cried tugging her shirt back on. ‘This is gonna be a long two weeks with the two of them,’ she thought. *~*~*~*~* Jen and Joey were sitting on the back porch, catching each other up. “What was it like to kiss Kevin Story?” Jen asked, her eyes twinkling. “You saw it?” Joey was shocked. She knew that the movie was popular but she never thought that people she knew were watching it. It kind of made her uneasy. “Well he's very sweet but his kisses are so sloppy. I needed a towel to wipe up after each take. After a while it was a chore.” Jen was laughing ecstatically now. “I always pictured him as my dream man… well I guess he still is, physically anyway.” “What did you think about it?” Joey was slightly worried about her friend’s opinion. “By ‘it’ you mean the movie?” “Yep.” “Well, the plot lacked and the ending was crappy, I mean who would've thought that Joey Potter, oh wait, Josie Parker, would star in a romantic movie. As a teen you won the title of Ms. Cynical, you refused to even be in the same room as one of those movies, and now look at you.” Joey stared at her not knowing what that meant. “I'm proud of you Jo.” Joey smiled. “I'm glad. You had me worried there for a few seconds Lindley. So tell me about everyone. I need ALL the gossip.” “Hollywood has not only turned you into a sappy romantic and a sex goddess, but now a gossip queen? The world is collapsing as we speak.” “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Dish the dirt already.” “Well, lets see. I'm a photographer. Mostly my stuff is used in calendars but I'm making a living. Plus I love my job. I live with Jack at the moment. He insisted on moving in with me to help raise the little one.” Jen patted her stomach. “Jack paints still but also manages a restaurant around the corner from where we live. Andie is a kindergarten teacher in Capeside. She just recently broke up with her boyfriend, Jake. Umm… Dawson is a film critic, but you probably already knew that,” Jen grinned at her friend who was trying to deny it. “Henry is a fireman and plays football for Boston College. That’s where he met Lindsay. She's a cheerleader—“ “You mean that that bleached blonde, giggling bimbo is a cheerleader?” Joey said with mock surprise. “Who would've thought!” Jen smiled. “I missed your wisecracking you know.” “It’s not wisecracking, it’s wit.” “What's the difference?” “Wit has truth in it. Wisecracking is simply calisthenics with words.” “Whatever you say ‘Oh Wise One.’ Well anyway, that just leaves Pacey, who you know is in Medical School in New York. Oh and Conner is one of his friends from Med School.” “It’s hard to believe that Pacey, not only turned his life around but is going to be put in charge of others’ lives.” “Scary, huh.” “Downright disturbing. So how much did you and Jack drink that night seven months ago? Don’t look so shocked. I know you both too well.” “A lot.” Jen smiled, happy that her friend was back. *~*~*~*~* Daniel was furious. He wondered where she could've gone. She must've left SOMETHING behind. And if she did, he was going to find it. He would tear this house apart if he needed to. *~*~*~*~* To be continued… |

Chapter 10 *~*~*~*~* That night, after the group came back from their fireworks-collecting trip and joined Joey and Jen, they collectively made dinner and ate in the foyer while watching ET. Lindsay was bored out of her mind. This had been the worst vacation she had ever been on. And kept catching Henry staring at that pregnant chick. How gross was that! The only cool thing about this so far had been meeting Josie, well Joey. Even though she was really moody and said a lot of stuff that she didn’t understand, Lindsay knew she was a big star. Maybe if she became friends with her then when she was done with cheerleading and went to Hollywood then she would have a connection. Either way, she was going crazy. She didn’t like any of these people, especially not that blonde haired guy. He was always so sweet and positive about everything. The only thing that was remotely interesting was to watch the interaction between the group of friends. If Lindsay was good at anything besides cheerleading, it was sexual tension. She wondered how everyone here, who seems so self-aware, were so blind to what was going on. She glanced back at the blonde guy, David or something. He was obviously hot for that Joey chick. He couldn’t keep his eyes off of her. Then there was the cute doctor, Pacey. She knew his name well. If Henry weren’t here, she would've jumped him on the first day. He also was having a hard time concentrating on anything other than Joey. Lucky girl. The perky blonde, Annie or Ashley, was engrossed in watching Pacey. All the while, Joey didn’t notice any of it. Lindsay suspected that she was interested in Pacey, but she wasn’t totally sure. Conner, the other cute one, had his gaze settled on Annie… no…. Andie! That’s it! Lindsay smiled and mentally congratulated herself for remembering her name. Henry observed the smile and mistook it for her enjoying herself and pulled her closer to him. This group was one big soap opera. She didn’t understand why someone didn’t make a move. They all just sat there and pretended like everything was okay. The only person that didn’t seem to be interested in anyone was the gay guy. Even the pregnant chick was eyeing Henry back. ‘This is ridiculous!’ she thought. She knew right then that she was going back home alone. ‘Well, I might as well leave tonight.’ *~*~*~*~* Dawson was extremely happy. Not only was he watching his favorite movie of all time, on vacation, with his closest friends, but he also had Joey next to him. He leaned over and slung his arm around her shoulders. She smiled and cuddled into his chest. “Jo, I can't tell you how happy I am to have my best friend back,” he whispered into her ear. He had more to say but he held back, knowing that she would be scared off. She always was. Joey gazed up at him and beamed. She leaned close and kissed him on the cheek before she answered. “It’s good to be back. I missed you and Pacey so much. Every time that something happened to me, regardless of whether it was good or bad, all I wanted to do was row to your house and climb up your ladder and find you two sitting on your bed.” Joey sat up, and Dawson tried to hold in the look of disappointment on his face as he felt her pull away. She turned away from him to Pacey, on her right side and also gave him a kiss on the cheek, knowing that he had heard every word. Dawson felt a pang of jealousy but told himself that they were all just friends, that’s it. *~*~*~*~* Joey was lying comfortably in her bed, when she awoke. She looked at the clock, which read 3:18am. Pulling herself out of bed she remembered that she had taken off the bandages from around her waist. Expecting pain but not receiving any, she stood up and walked downstairs to make herself a bowl of ice cream. She entered the wide kitchen and reached for the small stove light instead of the room light. With only a dim illumination she began to dish out her ice cream. Putting the carton away, Joey was about to close the door when she felt two strong arms wrap themselves around her. She looked up and smiled. Pacey grinned mischievously back. “Midnight snack?” “Yep. I just had a craving.” She eyed Pacey who was only clad in some gym shorts. “What are you doing down here?” “I had a craving too.” “What for?” “You.” Pacey said and before Joey could reply, he pulled her in close and pressed his lips to hers. Joey felt herself become lost in that kiss. It seemed as though every part of her body was focused on him at that moment. Feeling his heartbeat on her chest, her nipples stiffened and she groaned involuntarily. Swiftly he lifted her up and she wrapped her legs around his waist. He moved skillfully over to the table and laid her down on it, never breaking from her mouth. She felt his hands roaming across her stomach, over her shirt, and she arched up letting him pull her shirt off to reveal nothing underneath. Joey smiled as Pacey groaned and shifted in his now tight shorts. She stretched out to pull his shorts down but he stopped her and ducked out of her reach. Slowly he laid on top of her and kissed her mouth thoroughly. He moved one hand and grasped both of hers, pinning them above her head, and the other moved down her body until it stopped between her legs. Joey gasped and squirmed, wanted to touch him back, as he eased two fingers into her, but he held her tight. Finally she gave in and just enjoyed being touched and caressed. When she started moving her hips to meet his fingers he sped his pace up and added a third. She could feel her heart beat faster and knew she was getting close when her vision started to blur. He knew she was about to climax so he reached his thumb out and circled it gently around her nub. As Joey felt herself go over the top, her screams were muffled into Pacey's warm and inviting mouth. She lay there, with him on top of her, panting still high off of the effects of the orgasm. She felt so good at that moment. So right. Satisfied, she opened her eyes but didn’t see Pacey. She panicked but found herself still in bed still dressed in her shirt. “What a dream!” she sighed to the room. *~*~*~*~* Joey woke up to sunlight streaming in through the window. Moaning, she threw a pillow over her face. “Rise and shine, sleepyhead,” a voice called out to her from her desk. Turning and peeking out from underneath her pillow she looked at Pacey. “What do you want?” “My, did we have a bad night? Didn’t get much sleep?” His tone was mocking but she knew that he was worried. Though, what could she say? ‘Yes, I couldn’t sleep last night because every time that I tried, all I could see was me doing sexual things with you.’ Yeah, that would go over well. And he always knew when she was lying. So she was stuck. Instead she chose to change the subject. “What time is it?” “Past 11. You'll be surprised to hear that everyone's favorite couple broke up last night.” “What?” “Lindsay left Henry last night. She went back to Boston.” “Oh, I lost my main focus of torment. I guess the torch gets passed to you.” “Oh no, not more of Miss Josephine’s sarcasm!” She got up and hit him in the head with the pillow. “Don’t call me that! And besides, I'm not sarcastic.” Pacey snorted. “Well then, what do you call it?” “I'm brutally honest with a tinge of cynicism.” “Uh huh. Well I'll leave to get dressed now. Oh and this afternoon I'm taking you out. Just the two of us.” “Where?” “That’s a surprise. We’ll be leaving around three.” And with that, he left. Joey collapsed on her bed, suppressing the thoughts running through her head. This wasn’t a date. It was just one friend taking out another. That’s all. If it were a date he would have asked her. Holding in her disappointment, she headed for the shower. *~*~*~*~* To be continued…                 |

Chapter 11 Chapter 11 by Jennie Joey and Jen were in Joey's room getting her ready for her outing with Pacey. Joey had tried on six outfits by now and was getting aggravated. “Do you know where he is taking me?” she asked for the fourth time. “You do don’t you?! Don’t give me that ‘I have no idea’ crap! You do know, and you're just doing this to piss me off. Do you like messing with my mind?!” “Joey, why are you so upset about this? Is it because you're nervous?” “I am NOT nervous! What would I have to be nervous about? It’s just Pacey.” Joey looked and felt like she was going to throw up. “It’s okay Jo. I see the way that you look at him.” “What? With disgust? Revulsion? Annoyance? Dis-“ Jen cuts her off. “With love.” “No, you are wrong. I could never love anyone like him. He's so… so…I don’t know!” “Jo, are you speechless?” Joey looked at Jen exasperated but doesn’t deny it. “Wow, this has got to be a first.” Joey glared at her. “And it seems to me that you are speechless for a very good reason. You can't think of anything wrong with loving Pacey because there ISN'T anything wrong with him.” “Well then why don’t you love him?” Joey retorted. “Because my heart already belongs to someone and his belongs to someone also.” “You still love Henry?” Joey asked, ignoring the last thing Jen said. “I thought you knew me better than anyone.” Jen replied, mocking Joey's knowledge of her. “Well, some things you keep well-guarded.” “Yes, I still love him.” Jen looked shocked that she said it aloud. Joey remained silent to allow her to think about what she just admitted to. *~*~*~*~* Pacey hung up the phone and let out a deep sigh. He had done everything he could to make this night absolutely perfect, now it was out of his hands. Joey deserved a perfect night out. Pacey still didn’t know exactly what happened but he knew it probably had something to do with her boyfriend. Every time someone tried to bring him up in a conversation, she changed the subject. He wasn’t sure if anyone else noticed this but it was more than obvious to him. “Come in.” he mumbled to the door when a knocking sound erupted from it. Henry stepped in and sat on Pacey's bed, amused at the sight of Pacey stressed out. “Is everything okay?” Henry asked with a broad grin. “Yes, everything is fine, why wouldn’t it be?” Pacey answered a little too quickly. “Well for one thing, you only have one shoe on.” Pacey looked down at his sock-clad foot, flustered. “And you also have picked that comb up and put it back down three times since I walked in. Do you actually plan on using it?” “I'm just a little preoccupied right now, that’s all.” “Uh huh, and my name is Dawson Leery. Come on I'm not as dreamy and unaware as some of your friends are. If you are preoccupied, it’s with thoughts of Joey.” “Well of course I'm thinking about her. I put a lot of work into tonight and I want her to enjoy it. She seems so stressed out and closed off. I just want to help her in any way that I can.” “But you also harbor feelings for her too.” Pacey was about to object when Henry continued. “Don’t deny it. I know you do. But who can blame you? In high school she was cute and all but now she is absolutely gorgeous!” “It has nothing to do with looks Henry.” “Ahh, so I was right,” Henry said triumphantly. Pacey looked mortified about his slip. “Why are you so upset about loving someone?” “She used to be my friend. I haven't seen her for two years and I want to build things back up to the way they were. I want to be her friend again. I want to be her confidant. Right now she doesn’t trust me. She won't tell me anything that’s going on with her, or even what's going on in her mind. She's so guarded. I just want to break through and when I do, I am NOT going to mess that up by letting my feelings drive a wedge between us.” “But what if she feels the same way you do?” “She doesn’t and never will. She still thinks of me as Pacey Witter, town screw-up, good enough to be a friend but nothing more. I professed my love for her once but she didn’t want it.” “You did?” “Yeah. Junior year, after Andie and I broke up. Remember? That was the time that you and Jen started dating. Well, Jo and I had become true friends that year, and I ruined everything by telling her that I loved her. She did everything but laugh in my face. We didn’t talk for a week. And then when we did start talking again, it was never the same. I started dating Andie again and she dated that guy Kyle. Our friendship ended just abruptly as it had begun.” Pacey snapped out of the past. “I'm not going to mess that up again.” “I understand.” There was silence between the two. It wasn’t an uncomfortable silence, just symbolizing the need for each of them to think. “What's going on between you and Jen?” Pacey questioned, breaking the reverie. “I'm honestly not sure. I've never stopped loving her you know. I'm really worried for her. How does she expect to raise a child on her own? I know that she has Jack but what happens when Jack finds a new boyfriend? What is she going to do? And that’s another thing… why won't she tell me who the father is?” “I don’t know. Have you asked her?” “I've asked her many times to tell me who the father is and she refuses.” “No, I mean, have you asked her WHY she won't tell you?” “No.” “I think that that would resolve a lot of your worries.” *~*~*~*~* Joey, dressed and impatient, was sitting on a chair fidgeting while Jen put the finishing touches of makeup on. “I still can't believe that you are a ‘glamorous movie star’ and you don’t know how to put on makeup or do your own hair.” “Hey! First of all, I do know how to apply makeup, you just didn’t like how I did it. And second, I have people to do it for me.” Joey pouted. She was stiff from sitting still for so long. “Fine, I'm done, ‘Oh Impatient One.’” Joey stood up and glided over to the mirror. That was one talent that she had perfected. Joey knew how to move. She could do anything and make it look smooth and alluring. Critically looking herself over in the mirror, Joey approved of all of Jen's choices for the night. She donned a short, tight black dress with black open-toed heals. Joey had refused to wear nylons because of the summer heat, but this decision only accented her long, tan legs even more. Her hair was pulled half up with soft curls flowing all around her. Closely examining her cheek, she noticed that while the bruise had faded some, Jen had managed to hide all the telltale signs of it. Joey turned and smiled brightly at Jen. “I'm glad you like it.” “Thanks Jen.” Joey hugged her friend tightly. “I'm so glad that you're not mad at me.” “Of course not Jo. What happened is in the past. None of it matters now, right?” “Right.” *~*~*~*~* Pacey had never been so nervous in his entire life. He was downstairs in the living area with Conner watching a hockey game. He looked at the clock for the thirteenth time in the last twenty minutes. It read 2:49. He sighed audibly and closed his eyes. “Pacey, why are you putting yourself through all this torture?” “What do you mean?” Pacey asked from his position on the couch with his eyes still closed. “Why are you going through all this? You spent hours preparing for this. Why?” “I want Joey to have a special night. I want to impress her.” “Pacey, never try to impress a woman, because if you do, you'll have to keep that standard up for the rest of your life.” “Thanks for the advice Conner, but—“ “Hey Conner are you ready to go?” came a small voice from the doorway. “Yes I am.” Conner flashed Andie a brilliant smile. “My, you definitely are beautiful tonight my dear.” “Thank you. Hey Pacey.” “Hi Andie. You two have fun out there, and Andie… don’t believe a word this guy says to you. If he makes an unwanted move on you, you just tell me and I'll kick his ass, friend or no friend.” Pacey smiled. Andie glowed. “I can handle him. Let’s go.” After they left, Pacey was alone in the room. He closed his eyes again and caught himself as he was about to drift off to sleep. “Pacey?” Joey's sweet voice brought shivers up and down his spine. He turned and stood to face her. What he saw, though, made him unable to move, unable to speak. She looked amazing. Everything about her was perfect from her long legs to her big doe eyes. But most importantly, she was shining. He could actually see the sparkle that she had when she was a teenager, back in her eyes. He opened his mouth to try to speak but nothing came out. She shifted nervously under his stare. He closed his eyes hoping to regain his speech but all he saw was the image of her burned into his memory. “Wow,” he managed to croak. ‘Smooth Pacey.’ “You look nice too,” Joey said, admiring his black slacks and navy blue button-up shirt. “Your chariot awaits my Queen.” Pacey finally recomposed himself. Joey gave him a funny look when she caught him staring again so he covered it up by saying, “Well, I didn’t say what kind of Queen. Let’s go Ice Queen.” “That’s it. I'm driving now.” She grabbed her keys and ran over to her convertible. Pacey smiled and followed her. *~*~*~*~* Jen's back ached. She finally made it downstairs and headed to the kitchen to see if anyone was making dinner. Knowing the group that she was friends with, they wouldn’t be. She walked in and saw that Jack and Dawson were whispering in the corner. “What are you guys planning?” “Nothing much.” Jack said smoothly. Jen had to applaud his acting skills because she knew something was up when she noticed Dawson wringing his hands together nervously. “We, uh, we—we are going out to dinner. Bye!” Dawson managed to get out as he jetted out the back door. Jack gave her an apologizing look. “It’s a guy thing, honey.” He leaned over and placed a kiss on her forehead. “Bye!” And then he took off after Dawson. Henry walked in behind her at that moment. “Henry, it looks as though it’s just the two of us tonight,” Jen said apprehensively. *~*~*~*~* |
