I'm still reading!!!!! Actually I just started reading this and I am in love with it. I am so sad for Joey especially since she lost all of her family. And I am really sad Pacey lost bodie. It seemed like they were as close as brothers. I am really glad jen came out to visit. It really helped Joey which was good....she seemed a mess when we were first introduced to her.
I really hope you do continue....I really want to see Pacey and joey rebuild their relationship!!!! Hugs Sara |

Here comes chapter 10....... Thanks for all the super feedback! *gush* Heehee, I love it Well here I am again, and a lot quicker than last time with the update and I'll be a lot quicker again next time as the next one is written but needs serious editing On with the show... hope you like Chapter 10 On Christmas Eve, Joey and Pacey treated all the staff and their partners to a dinner party of take out pizza and beers which they ate on the newly carpeted restaurant floor as the tables and chairs hadn’t been brought back from storage yet. The mood was buoyant. Everyone had been working so hard on the refurbishment and they were all very excited and nervous of the approaching deadline for the reopening. Things were going very well on the work being done to the restaurant. The new kitchen had been put in place and they’d been able to sell some parts of the old one to recoup some of their money. The cleaning job had been completed and they’d all felt hugely relieved at passing their Health & Safety inspection earlier in the week. Now all that was left to concentrate on was the redecoration work and the plans for the grand reopening party, which was becoming grander as the plans and days went on. Helen’s patience had worn thin on the frequent occasions when Joey and Pacey had clashed over various plans for the redecoration and ideas for the party. They were both so hot headed, but their fighting seemed to come out of a mutual passion for making the business work as opposed to any real hatred between them. In fact, on a good day, relations between Joey and Pacey were increasingly less antagonistic and sometimes could even be classed as downright friendly. Helen often saw one of them smiling at the other when no-one was watching, before looking away quickly in fear of being caught out. Feeling like she was back at high school Helen wondered if she should be giggling ‘my friend likes you’ to Pacey before running away. But when they weren’t sharing secret smiles, they were often to be found screaming at one another over plans for the deadline that had been forgotten. Joey was meticulous with her list of things to be done, whereas Pacey, knowing the business a lot better, preferred to work on instinct and memory instead of sticking to Joey’s scripted plans. Frustration would turn to accusation which would then lead to insults being thrown, voices raising to fever pitch and inevitably ending with a slammed door and frosty silence for the rest of the day. They were both just as bad as each other, Helen decided. But the Christmas Eve pizza party listed everyone’s spirits and the wine helped to ease everyone’s tired, frayed tempers. Pacey tried to lead everyone in a chorus of Christmas carols until Joey laughed so hard at his singing he stopped. “That was definitely more ‘Elvis impersonator’ than angelic choir boy Pace!” she giggled. “Who knew you could sing quite that deeply?” Pacey’s cheeks flushed in embarrassment and everyone laughed as Joey rolled her eyes and patted him tenderly on the head. “I’m kidding sweetie. Sing another one.” “No,” he pouted. “You’ve spoiled it now.” He wouldn’t stop pouting until he felt Joey tap him on the shoulder and point upwards to see where she was holding a piece of mistletoe above his head. She kissed him softly on the cheek and he blushed a deep shade of red before grinning inanely at everyone around him for the rest of the night. Joey was sure she wouldn’t have kissed him if she hadn’t had the excuse of Christmas mistletoe and a higher than usual level of consumption of alcohol, but she was finding it increasingly difficult not to reach out and touch him sometimes. She found herself waking from dreams of him which mixed memories of their past together with images of the future and she got so angry with herself that it was a relief to be able to pick a fight with him over something else he’d forgotten to do for the party. Unfortunately, the fighting only really served to turn her on, which she felt such shame about that she was glad of the moody silences that followed, allowing her to go home early and take a cold shower. The last thing she needed to do was to get involved with anyone romantically right now, when she was just finally getting herself sort out, especially not Pacey. She hated the fact that she might be leading him on and convinced herself that the increase in her heart rate when they were together was purely from nerves about the reopening of the restaurant. Pacey was struggling with very similar feelings himself. Appalled at how much he was still in love with her and how she could still affect him just as strongly he tried to spend as much time as he could away from the restaurant. This created a vicious circle of course, as when he wasn’t there, things weren’t getting done and then Joey invariably ended up yelling at him, putting him right back where he started. He, of course, had never wanted their marriage to end; could never really envisage ever stopping loving her, he had never wanted to turn his back on the vows they took. But he still carried around a huge amount of guilt at his father’s part in the death of Bessie and Alex and took Joey’s frequent angry outbursts towards him as signs that she was still angry and somehow blamed him. Every fight just seemed to remind him of how crazy he was about her and the war he fought inside himself was much fiercer than any fight they had over the restaurant. Just stopping himself from tucking her hair behind her ear, or warming her cold hands when she came in to work in the morning, or kissing her forehead when she looked so tired she might pass out. Every day was heaven and hell and he loved and hated it in equal measure. Forever a sucker for punishment, when she’d heard that Pacey would be alone on Christmas Day, Joey felt so desperately sorry for him, and so desperately lonely herself that she’d invited him to come over to her place for Christmas lunch the following day. Pacey had looked amazed and a little worried, and he flushed with embarrassment as he muttered his thanks and accepted her offer. ~~ Christmas morning saw Joey running around like a mad woman, cleaning, preparing food, forgetting to turn the oven on, remembering that she’d forgotten to turn the oven on, frantically wrapping presents and she was finally just pushing a comb through her long hair and applying a quick smudge of lipstick when she heard the buzz of the front door. “Merry Christmas,” she opened the door with a flourish, looking a little flustered. “Merry Christmas Jo,” Pacey smiled as he stood in the doorway juggling two bottles of champagne with various gift boxes in his arms. “Oh my god, how much stuff have you brought, are you crazy?” she gasped. “Don’t tell me you don’t have just as many gifts for me under your tree.” He knew her too well. “Anyway, this one’s for your cat,” he laughed. “Can I come in?” “Sure,” she blushed, helping him with the boxes and taking one of the champagne bottles from him, into the kitchen. “They’re chilled, so we can open this one and keep the other until later if you like,” he called from underneath the tree where he was trying to find room to put her presents. Joey popped the cork and, with a shaking hand, filled the champagne flutes. “This place looks fabulous Jo,” Pacey stood in the kitchen doorway, shrugging his coat off and hanging it on the back of one of the kitchen chairs. “Jen did a real transformation on the place.” “She did,” Joey smiled. “Maybe we should call her later; wish her a Merry Christmas?” “Cool,” he nodded. Joey handed him a glass and they stood opposite each other, leaning against the kitchen counter and wondering just how they got there and what exactly they should say next. “Hey remember that first Christmas after our wedding?” he laughed and then looked up to see a look of sheer horror on Joey’s face. ‘Oh god…. Definitely the wrong thing to say,’ he thought. ‘Note to self: Steer clear of all wedding/marriage discussions’ “Um,” Joey let out a deep breath. “Yeah that was a pretty amazing Christmas.” “Well….. um, yeah,” he nodded, suddenly afraid to actually talk about it. He looked away from her, back towards the tree. “Shall we open gifts?” “Sure,” Joey whispered, walking slowly into the living room and trying to ignore the feel of his breath on her neck as she moved past him. They opened their gifts in front of the large log fire in the living room. They had each bought the other several small gifts and a main present that was a bit more special. Joey had found an old photograph of the restaurant from when Pacey and Bodie started the place and she had had it framed alongside a photograph of the new, improved restaurant with both hers and Pacey’s names now above the door. He had loved it and decided to hang it in the office instead of at home, as that was where he spent most of his time. Pacey had bought her a stunning silver watch. Laughing, he said that it was so she could always make sure she was in time for the early shift. Joey thought it was one of the most beautiful gifts he ever gave her and kissed him on the cheek for the second time in two days. Pacey, as promised had also brought a gift for the cat, and a coffee mug for Joey which said ‘THE BOSS’. She in turn had bought him some novelty socks which played Elvis songs when you walked along with them on. Pacey insisted on wearing them and waltzing Joey round the room to ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’ They were still laughing twenty minutes and one glass of champagne later when Joey realized it was time to serve Christmas dinner. ~~ Joey had really surpassed herself in the kitchen; dinner had been exquisite and Pacey insisted that she put her feet up while he washed the dishes afterwards. Jumping up onto the kitchen counter next to him, she decided she’d rather stay and chat. They’d been having such a lovely day so far, it was hard not to think back to equally happy times when they were first married. “Everything always takes me back to the past,” she said in realization. “I mean, the sad stuff now reminds me of the sad stuff back then, and moments like this remind me of the great times too.” “Remembering those times isn’t a bad thing is it?” he rinsed out a glass and looked up hopefully at her. “We do have plenty of amazing memories together, and surely it’s better to remember those than the sad stuff?” “Yeah I guess you’re right,” she conceded and he smiled in relief. “And to be honest, the bad memories…. I don’t think they feel quite so bad now. Maybe time and distance has numbed it all a bit…. Doesn’t feel quite so raw now… so insurmountable.” “I was so mad,” he said after a couple of moments silence, only the sound of his hands in the water could be heard. “At me?” she asked shyly. “Lots of things, but yes, you were one of them. I was mad at you for not loving me enough to work things out; mad at you for walking out on our marriage,” he shrugged and she looked away from him feeling ashamed. “I was mad at my father for what he did; mad at myself for wanting to protect him as much as I wanted to protect you; mad at Doug for telling me the truth about what happened. I was really mad.” “I’m sorry,” Joey sniffed and a tear dropped down onto her hand. She’d spent the last five years thinking of her own loss, her own grief and being angry at the world. She was finally realizing just how Pacey had suffered too. “But you’re right,” he shrugged off her apology, not really sure he was ready to hear it yet. “Time dims that, and all you’re really left with are memories, and maybe a few regrets.” “And loneliness,” she added softly. “You weren’t so alone,” he said sadly and she winced at his intimation to Alan. “Being alone and being lonely are two different things,” she said defiantly, suddenly keen to change the subject and return to their earlier festive spirits. She jumped down from the kitchen counter and reached into the fridge for the second bottle of champagne. Holding it up, she smiled and nodded back towards the living room. “Shall we?” Rinsing the final saucepan, Pacey dried his hands and nodded, following her with their glasses. Joey poured the drinks as Pacey stoked up the fire and thumbed through Joey’s CD collection in search of something suitably mellow. “Who knew you still loved Justin Timberlake so much?” he teased. “Do I still have them?” she blushed. “There’s five of them,” he fanned the CDs in front of her face like a deck of cards. “Oh I’m sure I meant to throw those old ones away in the move; must have forgotten,” she shrugged then smiled when Pacey insisted on putting the CD on. “Who’s he dating now?” “Britney again I think…. Um… not that I really follow him that closely,” she turned her red cheeks towards the fire. “Whew, it’s warm in here.” Pacey laughed. “Oh shut up,” she pouted, unable to stop the smile that was growing wider on her face. “You used to love Britney as much as I… followed his career,” she stuck her tongue out at him. “You’re right, you’re right,” he laughed. “I apologise. Anyway, I find her little sister much more interesting these days,” he smirked suggestively. “My god, she’s young enough to be your..your…” “Daughter?” he laughed. “Hardly.” “I was going to say younger sister, but they’re both just as bad, you pig.” “Jealous?” “Never.” “Really?” “Mmhmm,” she nodded. “You’ve always been jealous,” he grinned. “I have not!” “Liar.” “Why the hell would I be jealous about you lusting after some skinny blonde tens of years your junior?” she slammed her glass down on the table. “ think I can safely say, with absolute certainty I might add, that I am in no way, shape or form now, nor have I ever been, jealous of anyone, living, dead or imaginary,” she poked him on the chest. “and that includes Lara Croft you freak, that you have ever lusted after.” Pacey smiled. And then she kissed him. ~~ |

Chapter 11 An update huh? Hmmmmmm, okay then! Chapter 11 Pacey could feel a hand resting lightly across his chest and heard soft breathing into his ear on his left hand side. Of all the things that could strike him as odd, it was the face that she was on his left hand side. Joey had always slept on his right when they were married, insisted on it in fact. She could never sleep unless she was curled up underneath his arm which wrapped tightly around her, on his right hand side. It baffled him so much that he almost didn’t want to open his eyes in case it had all been a dream and he’d slept with someone else the night before and not Joey. Gingerly sliding his arm up from its place by his side, his eyes still closed tightly to the sunlight, Pacey gently felt for her fingers which lay across his body. As soon as he touched the wedding ring on her finger he breathed a sigh of relief. She still wore her wedding ring. Part of him loved the fact that she had never been able to take it off, but the other part of him felt it was a constant reminder of how happy they had been and how horribly it had all ended. It was a teasing reminder of his one, most spectacularly painful failure, which instantly brought him back to the present day. Oh god what had he done? She’d hate him now for sure, he thought sadly. She’d only end up resenting him for pushing her into something she wasn’t ready for, or maybe never even wanted in the first place. But she had wanted it, and he knew that. She kissed him first. The urgency and passion of their lovemaking couldn’t disguise the tenderness and love he’d seen in her eyes or felt in her touch as they lay tangled in each others arms, regaining their breath and strength before round two…. or was it three? Pacey smirked, still refusing to open his eyes to the reality of day. He had woken up in the middle of the night to hear Joey softly sobbing and pulled her gently towards her, whispering words of apology and tenderly stroking her forehead with his thumb. She had shaken her head furiously without words, so he kissed her mouth softly and they had melted into another embrace which took them through to daybreak. Finally, reluctantly he opened his eyes to be met with the sight of Joey’s delicate pink cheek resting against his shoulder, her hair spilling over her face slightly and a slight smile playing across her lips as she slept. Wincing inwardly again, he realized that he’d probably taken advantage of her. Christmas must be such a terrible time of year for her. She would be all alone with her memories, grieving for her lost family. She had been fragile and tired and he had teased and bantered with her knowing that it was something that had always made her jump on him when they were together. They both thrived on it. It made them feel alive. Now he just felt guilty for every second of it. Gently, he lifted her hand from its resting place and slipped out of the bed without her stirring. Looking around for his clothes, Pacey was faced with a hundred reminders of the night before. There was the lamp, broken on the floor where they had crashed into it, plunging the room into darkness. His shirt lay haphazardly where it had been thrown at the end of the bed; his boxers next to the pillow he’d just slept on and eventually he found his pants and socks in the living room. He finished getting dressed in there before making his way into the kitchen and to put a pot of coffee on. ~~ Five minutes later, the water was just finishing dripping through into the coffee pot and Pacey was leaning against the counter reaching for the pot when he felt a hand on his shoulder. Spinning around he saw a dishevelled but sated looking Joey, dressed only in an oversized T-shirt and nothing much else. She smiled shyly up at him. “Morning,” glancing behind him she yawned. “Is there enough left for me?” “Huh?” Pacey was still feeling shivers from her touch, could still smell her on his clothes, on his body, and tried desperately to pull his eyes away from her endless legs. “Wh… what?” “Coffee,” she smiled. “It smells fresh.” “Oh, uh yeah, sure, of course,” he found a couple of clean mugs and poured them both a cup with distinctly unsteady hands. Joey was leaning against the counter, with her back to it. She yawned again and stretched her arms up slowly above her head, causing her T-shirt to ride up high enough for Pacey to see she hadn’t put on any underwear yet. Her nonchalance was making him nervous. Convinced that she would have thrown him out for seducing her, or at least yelling at him this morning, her cool manner, and soft smile only served to throw Pacey into a world of confusion. “I should go.” “You haven’t drunk your coffee,” she reached up and pulled a box of sugar cubes out of the cupboard behind his head. Dropping four cubes into his mug, she reached up to replace the box and on the way down, her hand couldn’t resist smoothing down his errant hair. Pacey jumped back slightly. “Bed head,” she explained with a small smile. Why wasn’t she mad? Why wasn’t she yelling? “I have to get to work,” Pacey gulped his coffee, gasping slightly as he burnt the inside of his mouth. His eyes watered as the hot liquid travelled down his throat. “Restaurant’s closed silly. The decorators aren’t back until tomorrow…. Christmas break,” she reminded him. “I could cook you breakfast,” she suggested quietly. He was horrified by a sudden onslaught of memories. Sunday mornings had always been a ritual of waking up late then lazily making love before Joey cooked breakfast as he read out interesting articles from the newspaper to her. Pacey frowned, catching his breath. “I’m sorry…. I… should really go.” He darted for the door. “Wait!” her voice loud, but quivering slightly stopped him before he could exit. “Was it a mistake?” Pacey sighed, running a hand through his hair, “Yeah I think it probably was.” “But Pace…” “Look I really need to get out of here,” he said, almost helplessly. “What’s wrong with you?” Joey’s stance was defensive and her voice was rising steadily. Maybe this was the yelling he’d been anticipating. “What’s wrong with me?” “Yes, you!” “It’s you. You’re freaking me out,” he shook his head. “Why?” her voice now sounded soft, scared almost. “Why? Why?,” he threw his arms up. “Tell me Jo, what the hell changed overnight?” “You touched me,” she said simply. Pacey was terrified and confused and began pacing up and down the room, avoiding her eyes. “So… so what… do you want a relationship with me now… a marriage again? Joey, a few months ago you could barely look at me and now you’re acting like you want us to get back together or something,” he shouted. “Do you?” His face looked full of pain, but there was a flicker of hope in his eyes that made Joey feel ashamed. Her eyes dropped to the floor. “No,” he said in tired defeat. “I didn’t think so. You’re not ready for that Joey. You may never be ready for that, or want that again. You’re lonely…. you said so yourself. You just want a warm body and mine’s easier because it’s familiar and you know that I… care for you.” Joey couldn’t find the words to describe what she was feeling. Her mind tried to process her emotions and thoughts into words, while tears slowly ran down her cheeks. She brushed them away, then looked up on hearing the click of the front door behind him. ~~~ Pacey was sitting at his desk in the office, supposedly looking over the plans for the party. In actual fact, he had been gazing out of the window for the last hour. Before that he’d been doing a telephone interview with the local paper about the restaurant. One of the reporters had seen their ad for the grand reopening and someone had told them about the fire, and also the rumour that the co-owners used to be married. Apparently this was a story that now required reporting on. The woman had started by asking questions about the fire and the damage it caused, but swiftly moved on to what she called the ‘human interest’ angle: Pacey and Joey’s relationship. Pacey rolled his eyes, wondering what Joey would have said if she’d been the one answering the questions. An ex-journalist herself she’d probably have told this glorified gossip columnist to go jump in the Charles. Pacey gave non-committal, business-like answers, simply confirming that they used to be married, and although weren’t any longer, they still remained the best of friends. He then offered her tickets for the New Years Party and swung the conversation around to their new menu which would debut on the night. Once he’d put the phone down though, his mind was swarmed by images of Joey and for the first time they weren’t images of the past, they were memories from last night, from since she’d been at the restaurant, since they’d become tentative friends again. Mind firmly in the here and now, Pacey realized that didn’t mean it was an easy step forward to the future. “I’m sorry,” she said quietly from the doorway behind him. “I didn’t mean to lead you on. You’re right, it was probably a mistake,” she admitted. He turned and saw her face masked with guilt and his heart constricted in his chest yet again. “It’s ok,” he shrugged. “No, it isn’t,” she moved further into the room shaking her head. “I shouldn’t have kissed you or…. anything else, not when things are so tenuous between us. I’ve put you through so much, and it was unfair of me.” “I wanted you to kiss me. I wanted to touch you. I can’t help myself,” he didn’t want her to take the blame when he knew it was just as much his fault, if not more. “We might have known we’d fall into bed,” she laughed awkwardly. “We never were very good with champagne were we?” Pacey smirked and stood, taking her hands in his before pulling her into a hug. “I always remember it being very good with champagne Potter,” he smirked. “Pervert,” she laughed, blushing furiously as she pulled out of his embrace. “Nympho,” he teased. “I am not!” she exclaimed. “Ok, ok. You know what, let’s not start this back and forth again Josephine. Just look where it got us last night,” he smiled, relieved that things weren’t going to be broken between them again. Laughing as her cheeks reddened even more, he moved away to the window, giving them both some space. “Friends?” she asked, holding up his Christmas socks as a peace offering. “Definitely,” he giggled, taking them from her. “Thanks for these; I guess I left in kind of a hurry yesterday morning.” “Kind of,” she grinned. “I brought the rest of your gifts in with me too, so now you can hang the photos up on the wall.” “Thanks Jo,” his smile was genuine as he looked back at her from the window. “No problem,” she nodded, walking towards the door. “Joey?” “Mmm?” she turned back. “Will we be serving champagne on New Years?” She looked down at the floor, away from his piercing eyes, “Only to the guests I think Pace,” she said softly. He nodded sadly, “Ok.” “Would it be leading you on to say that I love you?” she asked in a quiet voice. “Hell yes,” he sighed, hanging his head. “I do though.” “And I you,” he said with a resigned smile. “But it doesn’t help us much, does it?” “I…,” she started, then took a breath. “Not right now, no.” Joey accepted the truth that neither of them was ready for a relationship and it was unfair of them to just be a one… two…. three night stand. Their relationship never had been, nor never could be about casual sex. She loved him too much to expect him to abate her loneliness. “I’m sorry.” “Like I said,” he shrugged. “We’re friends… and actually, that means the world to me Jo. I never would have thought we’d have got this far.” “Me neither,” she smiled. Realising that there was nothing much more to be said on the subject, Joey stopped fidgeting and headed back out to the kitchen to check on the painters. Pacey turned once again to the window, and gazed out to sea. ~~~ |

Re: update GAH! I'm sorry that I didn't reply sooner, but I did read it - honest and I could've sworn that I had replied. And now Double GAH! That is sooooooo not how I wanted that to go. I wanted them to admit that they still love each other, and are miserable apart! I suppose that I could be okay with them starting over as friends, but that won't do me for long. So, it's been a while since you updated this, would it be too much to ask for an update? *bats eyelashes adoringly* Edited by: Angel608J at: 1/11/04 12:36 pm |

Chapter 12 Hello *waves* Not sure if folks are still reading this here, but I'll continue posting as I'm pretty near the end now.... hope you like! Chapter 12 For all their good intentions, Pacey and Joey had fallen into bed together twice more in the week since Christmas. During the day, everything would be fine, but once the restaurant was closed up they seemed unable to restrain the magnetic pull between them. The first time, Pacey had given Joey a ride home at the end of the night and they hadn’t even made it out of the car outside her apartment. Two days later, Joey had visited Pacey at home to drop off some plans for the reopening and one thing had led to another as he gave her the grand tour of his apartment. Their attitude to one another after these dalliances was one of quiet embarrassment. It wasn't a case of being in denial about what was going on as neither of them ever brought the subject up. They would readjust their clothing, quietly say goodbye and then leave. They were both scared of what was happening, but much more frightened to confront it in case it stopped. The staff were blissfully unaware; even Helen, who usually prided herself on her ability to be able to spot a ‘just got laid’ look on anyone she knew. So Pacey and Joey continued in their bizarre parallel universe, while all around them the preparations for New Year’s Eve were in full swing. By the time the big night arrived, both Pacey and Joey were too stressed to think about much else than the organisation of the grand reopening. The champagne delivery had been delayed from the day before as the truck had been snowed in at the warehouse. One of the waitresses had ironed a hole right through the front of her blouse so Joey had spent the morning with her, shopping for a new one. By the time she got back, looking very harried, she found Pacey, with bright red cheeks, blowing up silver and gold balloons while Helen tied them together in bunches before hanging them up at various points in the room. “Alice was supposed to be on balloons,” she frowned, putting her shopping bags behind the counter before pouring herself a cup of coffee. “Alice called in sick,” Pacey took a deep breath before continuing inflating a large gold balloon. “She WHAT?!” Joey slammed her coffee down on the counter, wincing as hot liquid splashed onto her hand. “Relax. She promised to be here tonight. She’s had some 24 hour bug thing and spent last night throwing up so she’s in bed now, resting with a bottle of Pepto Bismol and promised to drag herself in by 6pm. Ok?” Joey rubbed her forehead tiredly. “Oh god, this is going to be a disaster.” “Joey, hon… it’s not going to be a disaster. I think we’ve had all the disasters we’re due. Tonight is going to be great and tomorrow will be the first day of the rest of our lives,” he reassured her. “Don’t you trust me?” “I guess,” she sighed. “Good! Now repeat after me….. Tonight will be a triumph.” Joey stared at him and rolled her eyes. “Come on… tonight will be a triumph.” “Tonight will be a triumph,” she conceded. “Because Pacey says so…” She ignored him and Pacey reached out to poke her in the ribs. She giggled instinctively as his fingers rested there and tickled her side. “Because Pacey says so,” Joey laughed and turned away, heading for the office. “And he is an all-knowing, love-machine, sex god,” Pacey shouted after her, the sound of the closing office door and her continuing laughter was his only reply. ~~ “Pacey!” “Jen, you made it!” he pushed through the crowd that had arrived to hug her, lifting her off the ground and planting a big wet kiss on her lips. “Steady on Valentino,” she laughed. “Where’s Jo?” “Talking to the press,” he grinned. “Oooooh, fancy!” Jen smirked, thanking Alice the waitress as she passed by and held out a tray of champagne glasses for Jen to choose from. “So she’s the official restaurant spokesperson then?” “Well my face is uglier than hers,” he laughed. “A lot uglier! So we thought it was best if she did any on camera talking and I’ll do the mingling on the ground.” “What a team,” Jen smirked. Pacey ignored the inference and led her to a table where Doug was already seated, talking to some of the regular customers. “Hi Doug. Long time no see.” “Jen Lindley as I live and breathe,” he stood and smiled before hugging her. “How’s life with you? Joey said you’re a psychotherapist.” “Well, you know how it is…. Pretty tiring, fixing brains all day-every day; but I survive,” they both laughed and Pacey excused himself to go in search of Joey. “There you are Pacey,” she said, smiling as she looked between him and the reporter. “Janet would like to get a couple of photos of us.” "Is that ok Mr Witter?" "Um… well," Pacey could see Joey blushing slightly under the soft lighting and new she was uncomfortable with the idea, but he knew it might be the only chance he’d get all night to sneak his arm around her so he nodded eagerly and followed them both outside to the front of the restaurant. They stood underneath the name sign, which had been newly repainted along with the rest of the outside of the building. Pacey put his arm around her shoulder and felt her tremble slightly. “It’s cold out here without your coat on,” he said softly looking down at her as the photographer set up his camera a short distance away from them. “Hhmm?” she looked confused as she looked up into his eyes. “Cold.” Sometimes her beauty left him breathless. “You shivered,” he added. “It’s…. um…. It’s cold,” she swallowed, blushing deeply now. “That’s what I….” “Ok, guys. Ready to shoot now,” the photographer called over to them, breaking them out of their reverie. “Mrs Witter, can you put your arm around Mr Witter too please? Thanks. Ok. Now smile. Ready.” The photographer took six or seven different shots of them, completely unaware at the tension in the air around him, before thanking them and dismantling his equipment again. Joey turned back to the reporter, “I’m Potter, not Witter. Can you make sure that it says that in the article please?” “I’m sorry?” “Your camera guy, he just called me Mrs Witter, and as I mentioned to you on the phone yesterday, my name is Potter. Joey Potter. Mr Witter and I are divorced,” the reporter looked embarrassed and nodded. Joey heard the door open and close behind her as Pacey walked back into the restaurant. ~~ “Pass me that bottle, it's New Year's Eve and I think I want to get all liquored up right about now,” Pacey demanded as he sat down in the booth opposite Doug and Jen. “Steady Pace,” Doug frowned and turned to Jen, who shrugged and shook her head. “I think I’ll go look for Jo,” she stood and smiled at Pacey who was staring down at the table. She nodded her head at Doug and then towards Pacey, mouthing ‘talk to him’. Doug nodded and she left in search of her friend who she still hadn’t set eyes on that night. “You ok Pace?” Doug took the bottle back from Pacey and poured himself another drink. “Yep.” “You sure?” “Uh-huh.” “Wanna talk about it little brother?” “Dougie, does this look like a face that wants to talk?” “Come on Pacey," Doug sighed. “Let me do the big brother thing again ok? Why don’t you just tell me all about it…. Get it off your chest. Hhmm?” Pacey let out a deep breath, pushing his drink away. “I dunno Doug. It's just… all highs and lows. I feel like I’m on a rollercoaster and I don’t know how to get off.” “But you do want to get off?” Pacey laughed sadly. “I do on the lows, yeah,” he nodded. ~~ “Any chance of bumming a bed for the night?” “Jen! You came…. I can’t believe you made it,” Joey hugged her friend tightly. “I’m serious about that request for a bed. Hotel availability on a night such as this is pretty much non-existent, or you know…. very expensive,” she grinned. "I got a big fat 'no room at the inn' wherever I called." “Of course you can have a bed. My home is yours, anytime you want. You know that,” Joey reached out and hugged her again before topping up both their glasses of champagne. “So what happened?” “Huh?” “What’s with the long face on Monsieur Witter? When I arrived he was like the cat that got the cream; and now he looks like someone peed in his Moët.” “I don’t know, “ Joey wouldn’t look her directly in the eye, her finger reaching out instinctively to the hand with her wedding ring as she held onto her glass. “You don’t?” “Maybe,” Joey shrugged, shaking her head. “Maybe?” Jen pushed on. “I don’t know, maybe I slept with him,” Joey ran a hand through her hair impatiently. “You WHAT?!” Jen screeched. “When?” she whispered in embarrassment as all eyes around them looked at the shrieking woman in horror. “Christmas Day,” Joey mumbled. “Oh my god,” Jen looked over at Pacey’s slumped form as he chatted to his brother. “And a couple of days after that.” It took Jen a couple of minutes to register what Joey had said. “You wh…?” “And maybe a couple of days after that too. I dunno,” Joey shook her head like a petulant child. “Joey!” Jen pulled her friend away from the crowd and into the office at the back. “My god. Last time I spoke to you, you said…” “I know what I said. I know how things were. However my body seems to be ignoring every sane thought my head is telling it, and has diverted on some crazed collision course labelled ‘fornication’. We don’t analyse it; hell we don’t even talk about it. We just can’t seem to physically stop ourselves from hours of serious groping before buttoning up and heading back to work. My god, maybe there’s something wrong with me. Maybe…. Maybe it’s a physical condition!” Joey’s voice was getting higher and higher. “Yeah ex-husband-itis,” Jen laughed. “Jen!” Joey moaned. “Don’t tease me. Help me! You’re the shrink. What do I do?” “I don’t know Joey, what do you want to do?" "Well I'd be able to tell you if I didn't keep changing my damn mind every five minutes!" "Well," Jen slowly took a drink of her champagne. "You could always sit down with your ex-husband and admit to him that you’re still hopelessly in love with him; that you regret ever leaving him and every misunderstanding and bad thing that has ever happened in the past between you and then hope like hell that he admits he feels exactly the same way about you too. Then you guys can fornicate until you’re all fornicated out,” she smiled as she finished. “And then get married again.” “Oh god…” Joey put her head in her hands. “You do still love him, don’t you Jo?” Jen asked gently. Joey nodded without looking up. “Ok. I know you’re scared,” Jen pulled Joey’s hands away from her face and smiled at her friend. “Why not start with something simple. “Such as?” Joey pouted. “Well it’s almost midnight isn’t it,” Jen pointed at the clock and grinned. “And what do people at New Year’s Eve parties mainly do at midnight?” Joey smiled softly and nodded. “Ok, I can do that.” “Good,” Jen patted her on the back. “But if my physical condition kicks in and I pin him to the middle of the floor, you’d better pull me off him before that reporter pulls her camera out,” Joey laughed as they headed back into the bar. ~~ “Just tell her how you feel Pacey.” “I already have Doug,” Pacey sighed. “No. You’ve skirted around the issue. You’ve hinted. You’ve talked about your feelings in the past. I don’t recall anywhere in this heartfelt conversation we’ve just had ever hearing about you declaring your undying love for her as it stands right now.” “It’s not the right time.” “When is the right time baby brother?” Doug looked up and smiled as Jen and Joey headed over to their table. “Ladies,” he nodded. “Come and dance with me Doug,” Jen demanded as she noticed other couples getting up to dance to the string quartet who had just started playing. “Well, it’s not usual officer protocol,” he grinned. “But, as I am off duty, I’d be delighted.” Joey and Pacey looked awkwardly at each other before looking at their guests around the room and back to studying their hands resting in their laps. After a couple of long minutes silence, Pacey shrugged. “Dance?” Joey rolled her eyes and held out her hand, “Well when you put it so eloquently.” They moved slowly to the middle of the dancefloor. Joey nestled in his arms, her chin resting gently on his shoulder. "We need to talk," she whispered, her lips grazing his ear with a soft kiss. "We do indeed Potter," he sighed, unwilling to relinquish his hold on her for a while. "But first we need to dance." ~~~ Feedback is always very much appreciated |

Re: *claps* I am definitely still reading....so keep on posting. So when you said we are almost at the end, I assume this means Joey and Pacey will finally talk and work it all out. That's what I am hoping for at least. I am really glad Jen and Doug are there to nudge pacey and joey's relationship right along.....sometimes those two are stubborn as all hell.....come back soon and update!!!!! Hugs Sara |
