moving to tempe from nyc
hi all,
i am planning on moving to tempe from nyc, and just wanted some advice regarding locations to live and some possible contacts for playing/recording music.

ok, i am looking for a fairly inexpensive place to live, but am willing to pay a little extra to be close to what's happening. (rent prices in comparison from nyc have been very reasonable) what areas/neigborhoods would i find in tempe that are clean and more grad-student-ish?

as far as music goes, i'm looking for anyone that knows/is in some good local bands to share like-minded views and recording talents.

thanks in advance,
tim

Re: moving to tempe from nyc
Hi, Tim. Check out theshizz.org for some cool local music. If you want to be close to what's happening, there seems to be a shift in the last year or so where bands are playing more in downtown Phoenix and less in Tempe. The two are fairly close - within 10-15 minutes by freeway. I don't know how rent is close to downtown Phoenix. A lot of North Tempe is set up for student rentals, so if you want to live close to ASU you shouldn't have a problem finding someplace.

thanks, the ruby lee sounds good. thanks for the link, and have to check out the others. i'll have to check them out live and get some demos out when i move in in july. how is stinkweeds? -- looks like a decent store online.

as for rentals, i've been looking close to ASU because we only have 1 car, and all i've been able to find are complexes. is this all there is, or are there houses pieced up for rental? say we might look in downtown phoenix, what's the best area to start?

thanks a ton,
tim

Re: <>
i would be happy to help in any way that i can. i too relocated from the east coast-and luckily i had a sister to help me out with locations etc. a good option might be scottsdale. it is located next to tempe and has a lot of options as far as apts/houses for rent. there is a complex that my friend lives in called san marin-its in old town scottsdale-which is about 5 miles from the asu/mill ave area. old town scottsdale is an area that is central to nightlife and shopping, restaurants etc. another friend lives in archstone on 70th st and thomas and she enjoys it cause there are a lot of young pepole living there-most of which are transplants themselves. living in scottsdale is not expensive-the further north you go the more expensive. but if you are renting-its all relative. you might try www.digitalcity.com or the 944 magazine website for live music and stuff. hope this helps

im a grad student at asu in chemistry. what department are you going into?

theres plenty of places to live in tempe relatively near campus at what im sure would be reasonable prices compared to new york. id recommend a house over any of the apartments around here, but thats just me. unfortunately, most of the decent houses are the kinds of places you just need to find by cruising around the neighborhoods looking for signs. one place to check tho:

www.rentalhotsheet.com/

thats your best bet for finding houses. theres no pictures on the list, but many of the listings have agents names or property managements that you can then search their websites for pictures.

Re: not such a wasteland....
move downtown PHX

the first friday of every month they have a "art walk" were all the people come out come out and as john said more shows are shifting that direction, the modified is down there as well as a best kept secret record store called wax "n" trax you will also find a bit more history and culture (aside from B.O.B. et al) rather then the oh so dominate urban sprawl "tear it down if it's 5 years old" mentality

tempe is good for record stores: eastside, stinkweeds, also check out casey moores (a restuarant/bar) it's got to be one of my favorite places, old haunted house converted into said establishment.

the only problem with tempe is the college kids, while nothing is wrong with being in college, they annoy me just the same

understand that you will feel a culture shock, from the city that never sleeps to the city that wakes up just to take naps. it's definately a great place to work on music, the constant humming of air conditioners is inspirational.

thanks to all who have responded, and the suggestions have been great. it's nice to know some kind of scene is going on there. and naps are good, too. in some ways better than nyc, the city of hopeless hipsters who live on daddy's dime and rats as big as my parents' cat. plus, it's really difficult to record in this small apartment where my stereo hasn't past volume-level 3 in years. the local music scene is okay here, just very difficult to stand out since nyc gets so many national acts and everyone is in a band trying to sound like the yeah yeah yeahs or the rapture. i ran into david bowie, once, and that was just mindblowing.

i'm visiting in 2 weeks, but probably not long enough to see any bands, as i'll be uber-busy with job interviews. anyone a secondary teacher here with some inside info? worth a shot. my girlfriend is the one accepted to ASU, in photo, thus the need to live near tempe.

keep the suggestions coming.

house for rent
My wife and I are moving to NYC from tempe and will be renting out our house. I am a grad student in philosophy right now and I walk or ride my bike to school everyday. Also, I use my house to practice with the bands that I play in and my neighboors don't care at all.

If you are interested in the house, let me know.

Also perhaps you could tell me a little about the scene in NYC? Or just some living tips in general. My wife will be attending School of Visual Arts in Brooklyn and I will by taking the train back and forth from Yale in New Haven.

thanks,
nick

asu photography
i just read that your wife got accepted to asu for photography. my wife is currently in the program and it's reputation as a great school for photography is well deserved. if you or your wife would like to talk to her about asu photography or anything else when you come out email me and we could set something up. also, i'm sure you would love our house if you are still looking to rent.

here is my email address again: nickandsara@mac.com

thanks,
nick

downtown phx
it's not true that you need lots of $$ to live downtown phx... there are places to find even in the historic district for less than 400/month. make the effort and you can avoid the drunker than hell college scene for actual art.
