Silver Lovebirds: That Old Black Magic
There it was again! It seems everywhere I turn these days, there are these strange love letters from some 'secret admirer'. I had no idea who it was, but I know they're for me. Ah, well, let's see what this letter says.

Though you have a heart of steel, it beats an alluring melody sweet to my ears.

Who could these letters be from? I know it couldn't be Phantom; she doesn't appear as often as these letters and we're only soul sisters. Quicksilver isn't exactly keen on dual military relationships, so it couln't be him. And I know it couldn't be Bluegrass or Will. No...maybe Moonstryker, but he's too flirty to write something this intimate. Unless a certain cyberparrot's been helping him. It probably isn't any of the other 'Hawks. I haven't read anything from them...who could my secret admirer be?

Re: Silver Lovebirds: That Old Black Magic
I kept a mental "ear" out over the next several days, hoping my empathic senses might give me a clue. Nothing, which meant that my admirer was either someone I didn't have frequent contact with, or it was someone who could shield their mind against casual reading; which describes half of Limbo. My empathy is strong, but untrained, so any serious attempts I make to read beyond the "public" mind is easily noticed.
I had also taken to hanging out in the Rec room off hours, sans armor, reading a book if I was alone, chatting and playing various games with others when I wasn't. Phantom's influence, I suppose. But my admirer was apparantly bent on remianing secret for now. I was no closer to finding out who it is than I was when I got the first letter.

"CHATTERBOX!!!!!" Sounds like Sapphire's mad about something. I could feel her tension mounting up as she stormed into the rec room.

"Hey, Ses." I greet. "What's up?"

"Have you seen Chatts?" she simply asks, trying to mask the rage in her voice.

"No...what has he done now?"

"Oh, nothing much. Just embarass me in front of the whole galaxy!"

"Why don't you tell me what happened before you do something you'll regret?"

"Fine." She sat down on the couch next to me. "I was on patrol last night when I get a call. There were strange noises at Dolar. I go over to investigate and what do I see? That birdbrain throwing a karaoke party in the vault! It was crazy in there! I wanted to strangle him right then and there!"

"Well, things haven't been boring since you two arrived." Of course, there's a few things I want to ring the bird's neck for, but no use telling Ses that.
"Was anything broken or damaged?"

"No" Ses shook her head. "for once, everything stayed in one piece, amazingly enough.

"How upset was Lord Cash?" I asked.

She thought for a moment. "He wasn't, actually."

"Well then", I replied "I think a lecture on how innappropriate it is to throw a party in a secired financial intstiution will be enough. After all, what if a Mobster had taken advantage of the opprotunity?" I shook my head. "Or, I can lecture him if you want, he seems to be scared of me." I grinned.

"Um... you'd probably give the poor bird heart failure, Emily. I'll take care of it. Thanks."

"You're welcome", I laughed "I know all about temper fits."

She relaxed, amnd stretched out on the couch, chuckling

"So, anything new in the grapevine? I've been kind of out of it for the past couple of weeks." I'd been running pretty long solo patrols.

"No, nothing new around here." Seska replies. "Unless you count certain people in Limbo becoming one step closer to a permanent vacation on the Asylum Planet."

"Okay..."

"What's that?" I must've forgotten to put away this last note. Seska took a look at it and gave me a look. "A secret admirer? Dang, what people won't do for a date."

"I know." I said. "I haven't a clue as to who wrote this."

"Any suspects?"

"Well, I think Chatts might have helped whoever it is out."

"He might; that birdbrain thinks he's some professional matchmaker. His antics in the name of love got us into a lot of trouble. One such antic nearly got me thrown out of the Academy. Don't even ask for details."

"Okay..."

"What about your empathic abilities?"

"Can't go anywhere beyond public reading. At least, not without detection."

"I could teach you a few mind tricks I learned growing up. There are some perks to being raised by Mykari."

"Ya think so?"

"Sure. No problem. Though, empathic abilities are more into the Heart Element than the Mind, but let's see what we come up with."

"Do you have any evening patrols tonight?" Seska asked.
I shook my head.
"Good", she replied."We can start while Chatterbox is avoiding me."
"Do me a favor and keep Chatterbox in the dark on this one, if you would. He's not good at leaving thinghs alone, and I do have a hell of a temper still. Not as bad as when I first got here, though, I really am getting better."

Seska laughed. "To hear the others talk, it's a wonder Hawk Haven survived your temper in that first year."

I rolled my eyes. "They exaggerate greatly. Yeesh, just beacuse I tossed a few of them across the room..." Seska chuckled by way of reply.

We went off into one of the many little alcoves Hawk Haven boasts, and sat crossed legged on the floor, knees touching.

I leaned my back up against the wall while Seska decided how to begin.

"Okay," she instructed. "I want you to concentrate on that letter and the emotions behind it. Clear your mind of everything else." I did as she said. I seem to be getting a little something. "Anything?"

"I sense a little romantic attraction." I replied. "But I can't pinpoint it."

"Either the person who sent that letter's far away or is really masking his or her aura. We seem to be getting close."

"Wait! I do feel something, but I have no idea what."

"What is it?"

"This letter. It has something other than a love note, but I have no idea what it is..."

"Hey, ladies!" We both stood up to see Moonstryker standing above us. "What are you doing?"

"None of your business!" Seska snaps. And they say I have a temper.

"Well, excuse me then."

"You're excused." As she huffed off, Moonstryker gave me a 'What's her problem' look. I explained she's had a tough day. He bought it and went off to find someone else to flirt with.

Re: Silver Lovebirds: That Old Black Magic
After Moonstryker wandered off, I cought up with Seska.
"You okay?" I asked. "You seemed pretty pissed off there."

"I don't like being chased." Seska replied.

"I can sympathize", I said, grinning. She looked at me and chuckled.

"Hola, ladies, what's up?" Oh, great, just what I need.

"Nothing!" I snapped, in unison with Seska.

"Yeesh, what's wrong with you two?" Chatterbox replied.

"Give me another hour before you ask" Seska said. chatts glanced off to me.

"Don't look at me", I said, "you're still on my hot list."

"Yeesh, one little CD, and she gets bent all out of shape" We hear mubling as Chatterbox flies off.

"Shall we try again tomorrow?" Seska asked me. "We need to work on your shielding and control anyways, it as if you're completely untrained."

"Thats because that's the case" I replied, "but keep that under your hat for now, no use opening a new can of worms here."

"Got it", she said. "Til tomorrow then."

I decided to go be social, so I went and changed after retracting my armor, ran a brush through my hair, and went to see who was in the rec room.

(Hotwing)

I was hanging out in the rec room showing Bluegrass a card trick. He's one of those skeptics who thinks magic is all illusion. Some of it is, and someof it is, well...magic. He watched in fascination as I droped a card and caused it to land on it's edge on the table. I told him to blow on it. It didn't budge. It just sat there balanced on its paper thin edge.

"How in tarnation do you do that?" he asked as he checked to see if anything was holding the card up.

"What can I say. It's magic."

Re: Silver Lovebirds: That Old Black Magic
"I guess Keisha must enjoy your little tricks." he commented. I rolled my eyes at that. Keisha's my baby sister, and while she does look a lot like our dad, she is M'Tah's little girl.

"Hardly." I replied. "Keisha thinks mimicing human parlor tricks is a waste of magic. Don't ask where she gets it from."

"I can think of a few guesses."

"Jim, don't even try it. The last time you mimiced M'Tah, she nearly grilled you. Literally."

"Well, she's not here this time."

"You never know."

"Don't tell me there's another Mykari delegation!"

"Yep. This time, the High Holy House of Carata's coming to Limbo, and M'Tah just happens to be part of her court."

"High Holy House of Carata...is that some sort of priest?"

"The High Holy House of Carata is the ruler of My'Ka and all Mykari. Her Imperial Holiness, the Avatar, is coming to settle some sort of treaty on Bedlama."

"But I thought they took care of that when your mom came last time."

"That was just a review, to see if Limbo was worthy of My'Ka's allegience."

"I suppose you're taking part of that, too."

"Actually, I'm going to be babysitting Keisha. She's coming to Limbo with the court and Dad's away on some diplomatic meeting on Earth. Sapphire's in charge of the delegation."

"Sapphire? How in the world did that happen?"

"Chatts leaked out that she knew about Mykari culture and spoke the language fluently."

"Ouch! I should've guessed that parrot had something to do with all this." I chuckled at that. Then the door opened. It was SteelHeart. Now, somewhere along the line of duty, I've grown fond of 'Heart. I started to get into the habit of hiding my aura from her. Fortunately for me, her empathic abilities weren't trained. But you never know...

She sat down at the table with me and James. She had her hair down. It's such a lovely fire gold.

"Hey, guys. How's it going?"

"Just passing time with some card tricks. If one more person comes in we could start a game of poker."

"Just don't let the Kidd join in the game. He'd have us all broke by the end of our break," James joked. "You know, sometimes I think he cheats."

I chucked. "Nah, it's just that you're silly enough to play a stakes game with a math genius." I dodged the card Bluegrass threw at me, bumping into Hotwing. I pulled away, heat rising in my cheeks. Okay, so I'm not good about casual contact. It doesn't help that Hotwing's the one Hawk I can't read at all. Unless he decides to enlighten me, I have no idea what he's feeling or thinking. I thought briefly about the letter, then shook my head. Nah, I'm just jumping at shadows. Yeesh.

Hotwing looked over at me when I bumped into him.

"Sorry about that, Leo."

"That's ok. Accidents happen," he replied with a smile. He's such a good natured guy. Get's along very well with most of the Hawks. Except for SandPhoenix. He once told me he thinks that young hawk is too damn cocky and stuck-up. But other than that, everyone considers him a great team memeber and a good friend. I've like him since he joined the team long ago.

Before we arrived on Bedlama, I sent a telepathic message to Lyore that we were on our way. He had told us that he would meet us at the space port.

When we got off the space plane, Lyore was waiting for us at the gate. His sister was so glad to see him she ran right into his arms.

lLeo! I missed you!l

lI missed you too, little sis. How is everyone?l

lWe're doing just fine, son. It's good to see you. Now, before I forget, I need to talk to you about the Intergalactic Rainbow Coalition...l

lOh, M'Tah, do you always have to jump right to business? Besides, I'd like you to meet one of my fellow IRC members. We can talk about the organization then, ok?l

Re: Silver Lovebirds: That Old Black Magic
Va'Lenn was very excited when we walked out. She especially loved the local flora. I don't know if that's because she just loves plants or her Element, Earth. Only ten years old and she's already mastered the basics of her Element. I couldn't be any prouder.

Lyore eventually introduced me to his fellow member. Her name was Detia Meglouse, a Terran-Mimian hybrid. She's also an interperter/translator. I felt a little sadness when I looked at her. Somehow, she reminds me of my late mentor, Elara Wek, who was half-Mimian herself. I was furious when I learned her murder was at the hands of purists, whom Lyore warned me were in this very galaxy. He also told me of what had happened since my last trip to Limbo. The Mob had gotten more dangerous, for one thing. Also, there was a new SilverHawk with exceptional gifts. Two, actually. One was a human ta'tori with a rather strong dual Element of Shadow and Mind and the second was Lady Detia's daughter, a young lady with a very potential Light Element.

"Leo tells me you've been in Limbo before, Ambassador." Lady Detia said.

"Yes," I answered. "I was conducting a review to see if this galaxy was worthy of My'Ka's allegiance. I'm proud to say it has passed the test, though I must admit it was barely."

"Some would say that we barely survived." I gave my son a glare when he said that. I was pregnant with Keisha at the time of my review, so things were a little testy. That was no excuse.

"Is it true that the High Holy House of Carata has decided to come?" Lady Detia asked.

"Yes," I replied. "Her Imperial Holiness is arriving here within a matter of days to discuss further treaties. I came early to prepare Bedlama. They think I'm bad, they haven't seen Her Imperial Holiness." I especially prayed that nothing will go wrong, especially since Avatar Carata is bringing her daughter, Lady Requali, along on this treaty so she could accquire diplomatic abilities. I would not be concerned had it not been Lady Requali's fourteenth year. Her Element, Heart, is beginning to grow in strength and her hormonal organs will be in overload. Goddess help us all...

I was really enjoying my conversation with Mistress Syrine. I even introduced her and her daughter to my sons, Valentino and Mikel Pita. They even got to meet Gypsy, who had claimed my lap as his own. When I introduced Tino to Kiesha, he just went to grinnin'! Uh oh. Looks like my oldest son has set his sights on a girl. He'd already had his first growth spurt when he was eight, and since then he's gotten more and more interested in the opposite sex.

"What are you smiling about?" Keisha asked Tino. When he didn't answer, she looked kind of offended. I explained to her that Tino was deaf. "Oh, okay. I know how to sign; M'Tah taught me." She repeated her question in sign. Mikel Pita asked if she would like to play. As soon as Mistress Syrine gave her approval, Keisha followed my sons to the yard, leaving us adults to talk.

"I see your eldest son is becoming quite the man." Syrine commented.

"I hope he didn't offend you or your daughter, Ambassador." I said.

"Not at all. Males staring after my daughter is something I'll have to get used to, eventually. I just hope he understands that Mimians, humans and Mykari mature at different ages."

"I'm sure he won't try anything he'll regret."

"That's good to hear. I only wish my son would be as interested in females." Leo sputtered and kind of blushed at that.

"M'Tah!" he cried.

M'Tah had no idea about my feelings for SteelHeart. I had kept them even from her. I wanted to let them both know eventually. But first, I wanted to find out if Emily was even attracted to me. She can be a hard person to read sometimes. I could tell she liked me as a friend, but beyond that was a mystery to me.

Things had been pretty quiet at Hawk Haven for the past few days. Hotwing was on Bedlama with his mother and sister, so the rec room seemed empty to me. That's when I realized, it was his company that I had been seeking for... well, for weeks now. Oh, dear. Am I falling in love? How does a person find out these things?
