Castrated? Brightlight castrated Qubo, one of the most notorious dealers in the sex slave trade on Mars? He was almost as bad as Dragor. Only difference is he saw all females as potential commodities, not conquests. Yeah, Qubo was definitely all about the money, not the sex. He had his share of women. But I doubt he’s even considering that now!
Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
"Whoa...castration. That's gotta put a damper on your life. But don't Martians regenerate severed parts?"
"Yes, but those parts tend to be inferior in comparison to the original. I belive that Qubo has become so small that there is not a chance in hell he's going to have another female again. And if he tries to go after Sundance again, her mate will kill him. Of course, that depends on whether or not I decide to end his life first."
"Why don't you wait until the trial results come in?"
"I intend to. How's Olyame?"
"Eh, she's a little shaken up, but all right. All Ranito really did was remind her of her man, ya know?"
"I see. I'm sure he won't bother her again."
"Okay. I'll keep in touch." After ending my communication with Lynei, I sank into a deep shock about what she said about Qubo. I mean, it's no intergaltic secret that Brightlight has one hell of a temper and I know from experience that he's really protective of Sundance, but I never thought he'd go this far! Sheesh!
Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
It wasn’t long before Lynei came by to pick up Olyame to testify at Qubo’s trial on Mars. She really seemed genuinely concerned about the girl. Even made sure she packed her pregnancy vitamins and such. Lynei may be able to be cold and ruthless, but she also has a good heart. Especially when it comes to young, abused girls. I was so impressed with Lynei’s honorable actions, I was inspired to tell her what I thought of her.
"Are you sure my testimony is going to matter?" Olyame asked me. "The trial is on Mars, so I'm a little concerned."
"If the Martian officials were conducting this trial, I'd worry right along with you." I explained. "But Qubo is going to appear before an intergalatic court which just happens to be located in the Mars Colony, which is under Terran control. As to your safety, I doubt there are any real concerns; no man would be willing to claim an unwed mother-to-be."
"I suppose you're right..."
"Do not worry, Olyame. If the yungar tries anything, I'll put him on ice personally."
"I won't be the only one, will I?"
"Quite a few of the illegal slaves will be testifying as well. It should be more than enough to put him away forever."
"I hope so. Are you going to prove that Qubo violated your friend?"
"Lenaria? I will try, but it won't be easy. Qubo got to her by getting her addicted to keira root, a local narcotic. Plus, the Hav'Throth are wanted for our involvement in several of the MATI's crimes, including the murder of a respected ambassador."
"You killed her?"
"Lenaria did. The rest of us merely caused a distraction for security."
"I see. I pray the court listens to your views, despite circumstance."
"Me too." As we began to leave, Mack looked like he wanted to say something. "Yes?"
"Well, Lynei." he started. "There's something that I've been wanting to tell you."
"Make it quick."
"I have thoughts of you, wonderful thoughts..." Oh no, not again!
"Mack, can this wait until later? We're in a hurry."
"Uh, sure. Don't want you two to miss your day in court."
"Okay. We'll talk later." I took Olyame by the hand and we used the metaphysical realm to get to the courtroom. "I wish I could come in with you, but I can't." I said.
"I understand." Olyame said.
"I'll be keeping an eye on you from the metaphysical realm."
"All right." With that, I went back into the metaphysical realm, using a viewing spell to see everything on the physical plane.
|Surely you're not serious about going to the law to avenge me, Lynei.| Lenaria's spirit asked me.
|What else can I do?| I replied. |Don't you want Qubo to pay for his crimes, especially over you?|
|Yes, but there are females here who need this more than I do. Besides, when the time comes, we'll deal with Qubo ourselves.|
|But the law will have legal recognition over your sorrows.|
|And what will you offer them to keep them from arresting you? They have all they need to convict Qubo; your story won't matter. Besides, you know first chance they get the Mykari will exterminate us like gardes.|
|I know.|
|It is most likely that Qubo, suffering a fate worse than death, will rot in prison for the rest of his miserable life. IF he escapes, which I doubt, then we shall deal with him the same way we deal with everything else; on our own.|
|I understand. No one is willing to help us, not after what we've done.|
|Do not worry, Lynei; when the MATI are caught, your testimony will guarantee us our freedom.|
|You know I will do my best.|
|I know.| Lenaria's presence left with that. I thought about what she said. She's right; if ever a problem came up for us, we always dealt with it ourselves. Now, to pray that Qubo remains in jail.

I was very nervous when I got called up to testify. It didn’t help that Qubo was staring at me the whole time I was up there. I knew he was probably thinking of horrible ways to get back at me. I wasn’t scared, though. All of his posse had been taken care of by the Hav’Throth. After I completed my testimony, I knew Qubo would regret not owning up to his responsibilities.
Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
Thankfully, every testimony from some of Qubo's victims was enough to convict him on all counts. He was sentenced to life without possibility of parole. Thank goodness it was over! As soon as everyone cleared out, I waited for Lynei to pick me up. Next thing I knew, I was in the metaphysical realm. I thanked Lynei for all she has done.
"Don't worry about it." she said. "It was nothing."
Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
She kind of smiled when I said that. I rarely saw her smile in the short time I knew her. It wasn’t long before I was back with Mack and the boys. Before Lynei left, I asked her about Ranito. She seemed surprised by my asking.
“I just wanted him to know that I really wasn’t upset with him. I actually think he’s kind of nice. It’s just that I was kind of freaked out by his resemblance to Keedra.”
“So, what are you trying to say?”
“What I’m trying to say is…well, here’s a letter that will explain everything. Will you please give it to him?”
“Of course I will. I have to go now. Tell Mack I said hello.”
“I will.”
After Lynei left, Tweaser came up behind me.
“So, you like the green guy, huh?”
“Maybe. What’s it to ya?”
“Detour ain’t gonna be happy about that.”
“So, why should I care?”
“Look, girl. Detour might be a little aggressive, but he means well. He told me the other day he’d take care of you if you’d let him.”
“Tweazer, that’s sweet of him to say, but I’m not interested.”
“Too bad. I think you’d make a good match.”
Well, that’s his opinion, not mine.

Oh be still my aching heart! My mind kept wandering back and forth to pretty Olyame. I know that Lynei said to back off, but I keep finding myself fantasizing about her. I wanted so much to go back to Earth and be with her, but orders are orders.
|Ranito! Supper time.| Oh, Waetar has finished making dinner.
|I'm not hungry!| I called. He rushed over to me in an instant.
|Not hungry? You? Ranito, what is it?|
|Nothing.|
|It's that Martian girl, isn't it?|
|Yes, it is about Olyame. What business is it of yours anyway?|
|Whoa! Touchy! I haven't seen you this cranky since you finally gave up on Lynei.|
|So what?| Before anything else can be said, Lynei came back. She handed me some sort of note.
|It's from Olyame.| she just said, then went to eat with Waetar. A letter from Olyame? Dare I read what it says?
Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
I unfolded the note to read it, but Waetar was being nosey by looking over my shoulder.
lHey! This is a private, personal note! Mind your own business!l
I went to my personal quarters to read the note. I didn’t trust Waetar to stay out of my business. When I finally read the note, I had to read it several time to see that I was seeing things right. I was pleasantly surprised by its contents! The note read:
Ranito, I am sorry about how I acted last time you were here. It wasn’t really your fault that I got upset. It’s just that I’m going through a lot right now. I actually think you are kind of nice and would like to get to know you better.
Olyame
P.S.- Do you really think I’m pretty?Edited by: Detia1 at: 6/20/02 7:09:07 pm
Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
I have to send a reply right away! So I did!
Dearest Olyame, I completely understand your situation! There is no need to apologize for going through grief. Now that I think about it, I do want to get to know you a little bit better. How about I join you for dinner someday?
Ranito
PS: Since you mentioned it, I don't think you're pretty. You're beautiful!
I decided to ask Lynei a favor. Perhaps she would deliver my letter the next time she goes to see Mack. She complained a little at first.
lRanito, I am not your personal mail carrier…l
lPlease, Lynei! Please do this, I beg of you! It’s very important!l
I guess seeing that I was reduced to begging, Lynei decided to give in.
lOh, all right! What harm could it do?l I thanked her profusely. I hope she lets me come along with her on her next visit. I so would like to see that lovely Martian again.
(Olyame)
It had been about a month since I had seen Ranito. I thought maybe he had gotten my letter and decided to change his mind about me. That had me a little down. Detour noticed and tried to cheer me up.
“What’s wrong, little mamma?” he asked, putting an arm around my shoulder.
“Oh, nothing I’m not used to.” I was used to being rejected by males. I was lucky Keedra even gave me a second look.
“You look like somebody broke your heart.” I had no reply to that. “Listen, what you need is a real man in your life. Someone who’ll take care of you and stuff. Someone who’ll treat you special.”
I looked down at the floor and started to fiddle with my hands as Detour took one of my hands in his. That startled me at first. When I looked up at him he had the sweetest smile on his face. You know, when Detour’s not trying to show off, he actually seems pretty nice. I thought maybe I should forget about ever seeing Ranito again and talk to Detour. Right on cue, Mack came into the kitchen to tell me I have a visitor. It was Lynei, with Ranito in tow.

Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
"Hello, pretty Olyame!" Ranito cried. "So sorry it took so long for me to see you, but better late than never!"
"I'm so glad!" I let go of Detour's hand and walked over to Ranito. "Did you get my letter?"
"Yes, I did, and I have a reply in tow. It would've gotten here sooner, but the mail traffic was so bad!" That made me laugh a little. Detour was not happy with the way things were going.
"Hey, pal, watch where you're grabbing." Detour snapped as he came between us.
"Excuse me, but you should be the one who should watch where he's grabbing." Ranito said. He sounded a little cold there. Oh no not again!
"You think you can take care of her? Oh sure, place her with a murderer. Don't think I haven't heard of you; I just keep quiet for Mack, so..." Detour placed a hand on Ranito's shoulder. "keep your hands off. She needs a man with her." Ranito didn't seem bothered by that, but he did take Detour's wrist off of his shoulder and snapped it. Detour screamed in pain and collapsed to the floor. Ranito said something to him, but I couldn't hear him.
(Ranito)
Now, normally, I don't let punks like him bother me, but he did. So I broke his wrist and whispered in his ear as he was on the floor.
"Number one, I am a mercenary. Murderers do their killings for free or have personal motivation, but I am a professional working for profit. And as to finding a man for Olyame, who did you have in mind? You? You're barely a boy, let alone a man!"
"You broke my wrist, damn you!" he hissed.
"Be grateful I don't break your neck, or your crotch, which is what I will do if you ever go near Olyame in such a fashion again."
Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
Olyame quickly knelt down to check on Detour, who was whimpering in pain.
“That mutha f*cka broke my wrist, man!” he whined. That’s when Olyame looked up at me with a look of great disapproval. Lynei didn’t look too pleased either. When Mack came on the scene, he just shook his head and took the boy to the hospital. The other boys were also giving me nasty looks. Ok, I think I’m in trouble again!
Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
|You...jaba!!!| Yikes! Lynei is pissed, big time. I knew she wasn't too happy with the way I handled things, but she normally doesn't snap like that, especially not in public. |What do you think you're doing, breaking that boy's wrist?!|
|I did not like his attitude, okay?| I replied. |If he hadn't been all arrogant--|
|You're one to talk about arrogance! I should've known better than to take you here!|
|But I--|
|Just my luck that the boy would probably retaliate on account on your actions!|
|He started it!|
|I don't care! You were reckless in handling that situation!|
|Is that why you always refused me? Because I get a little carried away?|
|That is ONE reason why I rebuffed your advances. Another is that I do not date children.| That drew the line. Lynei and I were the youngest of the group, but I was a few months older.
|I am not a child! And I don't appreciate you and Waetar treating me like one!|
|Then stop acting like one!|
|You know what, this was a mistake, coming here.| I then went out the door, and into the world. Lynei said something else, but I didn't care to hear her. All I knew was that I needed to get out of there, and now.
I was so upset by what Ranito did to Detour! I mean, I know he had to be a little jealous, but breaking the boy’s wrist was uncalled for! Now, Detour and I may not have been an item, but he was nice to me and helped me every chance he got. He was a good friend. The other boys weren’t too crazy about Ranito. They felt he had a lot of nerve barging in and trying to claim me for himself without having done much for me. But what did they expect? Ranito lived far away from Chicago. In fact, I wasn’t sure where he lived. I did know it was nowhere near us. Anyway, after Mack took Reggie (that’s Detour’s real name) to the hospital, Lynei and Ranito got into it. They were speaking their native tongue, so I couldn’t understand what they were saying. Ranito finally left in a huff while Lynei was still yelling at him. I decided to follow Ranito so I could talk to him, maybe calm him down. What I didn’t know was that Tweaser, Chico, and Puck decided to follow him too. Unfortunately, talking was not on their mind.

Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
I found Ranito in a nearby alley, slumping on the wall. He looked very upset. When I got closer, he turned his face away from me. "Are all Mykari males like you?" I asked.
"Nope, it's just me." he said, barely above a whisper. "A total outcast."
"Look, I'll tell you right now, I think you're nice, but way too prone to violence. You think you could calm down a bit?"
"After what just happened, I'm surprised you're even speaking to me again."
"Well, just call me a sucker for a hopeless case."
"Whatever."
"So, you wanna talk or something? There must be something on your mind, like the wrist."
"He'll live. Besides, this isn't the first time it's happened."
"What, the temper or the girl?"
"Both, actually. Only I never did one for the other last time."
"Lynei?"
"How did you know?"
"Only girl in your group, right? Besides, she's pretty. Must have tons of males after her."
"Not really. They're all too scared of her. I tried to gain her affection, but no luck. In the end, I dismissed it as a dumb crush."
"How sad. Anyways, you want to get somewhere with me, you're going to have to deal with that temper of yours."
"I...can not make any promises, Olyame. But I will try."
Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
As we continued to talk, I intertwined my arm with Ranito’s. That seemed to cause him to relax. When I laid my head on his shoulder, he smiled. He then let go of my arm and put his around my shoulder.
“You know, you shouldn’t be sitting on the ground like this in your condition. Let’s go someplace else to sit.” He stood up and then helped me get up from the ground. As we headed over to a nearby bench, the boys intercepted us. They looked like they had a serious score to settle with Ranito about what he did to Detour.
The boys took Olyame out of the way and surrounded me. They looked like they were going to jump me. Under normal circumstances, I would've knocked all three of them cold, but I had to try and apease Olyame. Just when I thought I had no choice, she rushed right in front of me.
"Stop it!" she told those boys. "Don't hurt him!"
"He hurt Detour." One of those boys said. "We just wanna make it even."
"Then you'll have to go through me." Neither of those boys wanted to do that. "If you're upset for what Ranito did to Detour, then he'll apologize to him." What?! Oh well, it's the least I could do...if they let me.
Re: Love and Laughter: Double Time
“Man, an apology from that punk won’t mean sh*t!” the middle boy snapped and he inched a little closer. If he touches Olyame I can’t promise I won’t lose it.
“Chico, listen to me. He didn’t mean it. He just got a little carried away. C’mon, guys. Give him a chance for me.” Wow, she’s really standing up for me! What a great girl! The boys decided to back down when they finally realized Olyame wasn’t going to move. They gave up and went back to Mack’s place leaving Olyame and me alone once again.
