escaping goats
We just bought 4 doe Goats. Put them in a pen for 2 days. Then let them out in a 40'x80' section of hayfield fenced with 2 strands of electric fence. The lead goat hit the fence and bounced back, then proceded right through the fence with the other 3 right behind. After an hour or more chase through about 15 acres of hayfield the goats were back in thier pen. The next day I added 2 more strands of wire, making a total of 4 strands of electric wire. Let the goats out again and they went right through at the same place as the first time..... Am I missing something? Am I supposed to just let them run free and coax them back into the pen with food or what?...Please help...The goats will be staying in thier pen until I hear from you and find out what to do. We really like them and don't want to lose them. thanks
Are you sure the electric wire is working right? Did you personally test it :)))) Some fence chargers have a continuous current going through it, others pulse. If it is the pulsing type they can learn to time it and go through while there is no charge. Some animals are tough enough to take it,, if the same goat is the first through that may be your problem. The only sure way to solve it if everything is working right and they keep going through, is to refence with field fencing at least 5 feet high.
Re: escapees
if you're sure you don't have a short somewhere and the fence is working effectively, then I'd suggest hanging a few strips of fabric here and there so they can "see" the perimeters...and then maybe walking them around it to acquaint them with it and maybe even let them touch their nose to it to give a jolt, so they won't go back to it...(of course you might get a jolt too!)...I've used three strands of elec fence with my mini's (only about 3 feet tall at top strand) with no problems at all...no one's ever gone over, under or thru it. I hope this helps...good luck!
