THE SCHOOLHOUSE
  THE DINING HALL
A set of heavy oak doors lead from the foyer of the schoolhouse into the dining hall, a traditional, mahogany-panelled room with wooden tables and benches. The floor is polished and the windows are set high into the walls. Portraits of famous monarchs, prime ministers and headmasters keep watch over the goings-on below. A formal meal is held here every evening, but attendance is optional.

  THE BALLROOM
This is the largest and grandest room in the entire school building. The patterned wooden floor has a smooth, waxed finish, and the walls are painted white with golden gilt decoration. A magnificent chandelier hangs from the high, domed ceiling, and the tall windows offer a panorama of the school grounds outside. This room is used for meetings, dances and other important events.

  THE CHAMBERLAIN LIBRARY
The Chamberlain Library at Castleford College has one of the most extensive collections of historic and modern books for miles around. The volumes are stacked upon hundreds of shelves, and are kept under close scrutiny by the librarians. A heavy silence hangs over this area of the school, and the air is distinctly dusty. The library is open every day except Sunday.

  THE FACULTY OFFICES
Scattered around the schoolhouse, down long cloistered corridors and pokey hallways, are the various homely offices and carpeted studies belonging to the Castleford faculty. Every staff member has an office, complete with dusty bookshelves, a coffee machine, a computer, a wooden desk, and the obligatory potted plant. Remember to knock before entering!

  THE CONCERT HALL
A huge, open room that serves as a concert hall, music room and theatre. School plays, pantomimes, orchestral concerts and music lessons are held here. There are stacks of fold-up chairs at the back of the hall for productions, and several cupboards containing music stands and instruments. A large, black grand piano sits on the polished wooden stage.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS
  SHERBOURNE HOUSE
A sixteenth-century stone building containing the dormitories for the male occupants of Castleford College. Ivy crawls up the crumbling walls, and the interior of the house is made up of dim, portrait-lined corridors, small but comfortable bedrooms, a fairly large common room with a television, bookshelves, plump sofas and chess boards, and a private study area for the older boys. Male teachers have apartments here.
025/10/05 4:58 pm
  ST. CATHERINE'S HALL
The dormitories for the female members of Castleford are found here. The building is situated across the quadrangle from Sherbourse House, and is a maze of Tudor-style panelled corridors, cloistered walkways, traditionally furnished bedrooms and spiral staircases. The dark staircase at the back of the building is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former student who fell to her death from St. Catherine's Tower in the 1800s. Female teachers have apartments here.

ADDITIONAL BUILDINGS
  THE KING'S BUILDING
This old building is where the classrooms and laboratories are situated. It is one of the largest structures on the school site, and is an impressive five stories high. With stone archways, statues at its entrance and large flagstones, it is truly grand. Inside, the classrooms are large and traditional, with two-seater wooden desks, chalk boards, dog-eared maps tacked up on the walls, and creaking floorboards.
025/10/05 5:36 pm
  THE BERNADINE CHAPEL
The Bernadine Chapel is a fairly small but beautifully architectured building adjoined to the schoolhouse. It is surrounded by quiet, cloistered walkways and courtyards. Students and teachers congregate here every weekday morning for registration and an assembly, and on Sundays the school priest gives a morning service. Attendance to this service is optional, while registration is mandatory.
025/10/05 5:26 pm
  THE SPORTS HALL
Located not far from the rest of the school is a modern sports building, built in the last decade to accommodate for the growing number of teams and students studying sport. The building is light and airy, and has a large playing field complete with tennis courts, a gymnasium, squash courts, a cricket pitch and a football field. Matches, tryouts and competitions are held here.

THE SCHOOL GROUNDS
  THE RIVER BANK
Running alongside Castleford College, partially hidden by drooping willow trees and large, towering oaks, is a fast-flowing river. Crashing over rocky outcrops and tree roots, it circles the school and then disappears off into the countryside. The river bank is dotted with benches, jetties and boat houses, and it is often used for rowing practice by the team. Others like to sit by the water for a study session or a chat with friends.
025/10/05 5:41 pm
  THE SCHOOL LAWNS
Stretching out in all directions are the lawns and gardens. The grass is kept short and neat all year 'round by the school gardeners, and in summer the flowerbeds are choked with vivid flora and fauna. Magnificent oak trees line the paths, along which a multitude of wooden benches are situated. Amid the gardens are a courtyard with a fountain at its centre, and a croquet lawn.
025/10/05 5:50 pm
  THE WOODLAND
A small, thick, deciduous forest surrounds most of the school's extensive grounds. It begins just beyond the river, and consists mainly of oak and maple trees. An abundance of dark, shiny holly grows here during the winter months, and there are several grassy clearings dotted throughout the area. Students are not permitted to venture very far into the wood, for safety's sake, but paths do cut straight through the trees to the fields on the other side.

ELSEWHERE
  CASTLEFORD CITY
About half a mile away from Castleford College is the city of Castleford, a fairly large collection of Tudor-style houses, cafés, restaurants and shops. The settlement derives its name from the famous castle that stands on top of a grassy hill in the middle of the city. It has now fallen into ruin, and has been turned into a tourist attraction. History students often embark on school trips to the castle or to the museums in the city.
