after workouts
what should i eat after my weight workout? should i eat the same if i just do cardio? you mentioned in your info i should be having a post workout shake, what do i use for this?
You should not have the same post workout meal after cardio, the post workout meal I speak about is designed to repair damaged muscle. This damage does not occur during cardio.
Re: after workouts
ok, read the article. so i should be consuming hi gi carbs and protein after weights. Can i have a shake with protein and soy milk? you said immediately after working out, should i bring my stuff to the gym with me or wait until i go home? i only live a couple minutes from my gym.
Re: after workouts
You can have a shake with soy milk but it will slow the absorption somewhat. Ideally just make the shake with whey, a sugar (like Gatoraid) and water. Consume within 1 hour of putting down your last weight lifted.
Re: after workouts
I'm assuming that it would be alright to have two drinks -- one glass of Gatorade and then a protein shake with glutamine for pwo. I've been drinking 8 ozs. of Gatorade and then my shake -- I just didn't think Fruit Punch Gatorade would be yummy with vanilla protein!
Re: after workouts
I add the orange gatorade with vanilla protein (along with glutamine, bcaa's and creatine) ..tastes like an orange creamsicle...mmmmmm
Re: after workouts
How much? Depends on the person and dietary goals. Every person I train has a different amount of protein and carbs in thier post workout shake. Based on what you have written about your body I would tend to give you less than one scoop, maybe 3/4 of a scoop of Gatoraid.
3/4's of a scoop of gatorade? crystals? I thought it only came in the ready to pour liquid form. If it's the liquid, am I using the same scoop as comes in the protein? 'cuase I'm guessing too much gatorade is not a good thing.
Re: after workouts
Yes, you can get it in powder form. It is better this way as you are in complete control of how much or how little you are using. Plus it is more portable, you can have your protein powder and Gatoraid powder in your shaker cup as you go to the gym then add water at the end of your workout.
The scoop comes with the Gatoraid. All scoops are not created equal.
So, in my continuing quest for Gatorade -- I forgot to buy it on the weekend, so I didn't have it for my pwo yesterday -- I drank the liquid form with my shake. I went out and bought the crystals and when I got home, I was curious to see this "scoop". Well, NO SCOOP in the package -- seriously --I dumped it out and there was no scoop. So, I had to buy another container of it and I stood in the aisle shaking them to see if I could hear something bangin' around. I did, and luckily, there is a scoop!!! Looking forward to having this after my workout today!!
But, on a postive note, I now have two containers of Gatorade that should last a while!

OMG -- I had the Gatorade in my PWO shake and that is about THE BEST thing I have had to drink in ages!!! Makes pushing thru that last rep worth it!!! Edited by: ange123 at: 9/5/06 10:38
Re: after workouts
the post workout shake is the one meal all my clients look forward to. At first they think it is going to taste bad, then they try and love it. Get ready to recover faster and get your energy back on track for the day faster.
I work out later in the evening when I work days. I have my pwo right after I finish and soon after I'm in bed. Can I/should I still have cottage cheese as my last meal during this week and if so, how soon after my pwo? I'm assuming I would have to let the sugars get to my muscles first before I put anything else into my system.
Re: after workouts
I dont like to have high GI carbs right before bed HOWEVER, if you consume your PWO shake 1hr before bed that is all you will have. If it is 2hrs or more I would have the cottage cheese before bed. Keeping in mind we are talking about getting lean here and not maintenance or performance dieting.

Thanx Darrin -- I have to come up with two nutrition plans -- one for when the weeks I work out during the day and one for the weeks I workout at night! More pieces of the puzzle are falling into place!
