Yoga--any info
I was thinking about learning some yoga poses and was wondering if anyone had any input. I need to increase my flexibility and loosen up, my hips are almost immobile. I'm open to any suggestions or comments.
Hi LA,
I am a huge yoga fan, it was the best low impact exercise for me when i was a fat chick LOL
If your not worried about cost i would look for a good class that has small numbers as it means you get one on one attention more often which hurts more as they put your body they way they want it weather its humanly possible or not LOL
Or if you just want to get a good idea of what your in for at a low cost i suggest finding yourself a DIY at home dvd thats how i started
I found yoga was great for my posture aswell as for flexibility! I can almost do the splits side ways but once i am down its darn hard getting back up LOL
Keep us updated i would love to see what you think a friend of mine RaeC calles it human pretzel class and she's not far wrong LOL
Em

Re: Yoga--any info
I hear you,the site is huge and can be overhelming.Just like bodybuilding site can be a bit freaky for normal folk
You put me on the spot LA Yoga is about balance, same like when building body..you want symetry. Each pose has its benefits...but if I had to pick two overall poses I would go with Dog pose: yoga.org.nz/postures/dog_...uction.htm
(Dog pose works on overall strenght-it is actually recovery pose in betwen hard poses)
and Warrior: yoga.org.nz/postures/warr...uction.htm
( warrior is great for opening the hips and for stamina...it is a tought pose that takes a long time to master, but once you get it it feels awesome)
BTW if you menstruate you are advised not to do any inverted poses such head stand, handstand, shouder stand etc...
Hope this helped?

Re: Yoga--any info
LOL if you are as hectic like me it could take some time talking yourself into it As much as I love yoga I have to push myself from time to time to do the class e...so often I just want to crawl to bed and rest how hammered I am...but after the class you feel like million bucks, much looser and refreshed I pretty much do Yoga everyday...sometimes real hardcore and other days recovery
Re: Yoga--any info
I practised ashtanga yoga for 2 years! it really changed my bodyshape. Its a very dynamic form of yoga and the nearest you will get to resistance training without picking up a weight! It really lengthens the muscles and has the ability to make you look long and lean. I have seen it written that yoga has no cardio benefits but I defy anyone who has never tried ashtanga to last the whole class without feeling like they have run 10 miles and gone 10 rounds with mike tyson!!!!
It also builds a very strong upper body, it gave me shoulders and chest where I had none! and it improved my flexibility 200%! Madonna is a prime example of an advanced ashtanga practitioner and has the classic ashtanga bodyshape.
It has been known to reduce grown men to tears so not ideal if you are looking for a slow relaxing stretch, but great if you want to improve flexibility and add interest to your strength routine.
Re: Yoga--any info
Hey Girl Did you do Astanga Primary series? I am doing Richard Freeman's primary series once per week...phew hectic stuff I need like whole week of mental preparation for that LOL I only started with yoga at age 37..now 39..stiff as a plank..so it has been a very painful process...but rewarding. I am starting to get the benefits big time I am 100% more flexible and all my aches are disapearing. Well except my messed up shoulder that might need surgery
Re: Yoga--any info
Hi, I started on primary series and moved on to secondary while still practising primary regularly. I havent practised in a while now due to the fact that I moved home and other stuff and cancelled my gym membership. I have now rejoined the gym and still havent worked up the courage to rejoin the ashtanga class, I have been practising at home to get back into it. ashtanga is much harder than weights in my eyes due to the extreme flexibility needed . when I first, first started I was soooo inflexible, I was rolling around all over the place and looked really sweaty and uncoordinated not like all the other calm elegant practicioners, but after a year I became quite flexible and moved into the advanced class.
Its strange but I have a kind of love/hate relationship with ashtanga! I kind of dread it before I start, but when Ive finished I feel so GOOD about what i've accomplished
My teacher was a pupil of john scott and I have books and videos by david svwenson.
I hear you
LOL..I hear you load and clear about the Pre-Astanga's mental state We have this ritual before we start We go for a long walk in forest, then we pop into our fav cafe...read the paper and sip on strong cuppa java and then blast off Sometimes I cruize throug and sometimes I hit major potholes LOL. But as you at the end I feel fantastic I had one of the best volley trainings straight after Astanga. I was so loose and focused, great feeling
David Swenson...shees he is ripped like crazy hey
Re: I hear you
oh yeah and a word of advice, i was doing it once a week and still finding it VERY hard after months, but I found out that when I practised just one extra session at home, it made a world of difference to my class practise making it 150% easier.
I wish
Phew..I wish I could squeeze it in 2x per week, but it is impossible We do Astanga on Saturday Avo. On Tuesday night we have 1.5 hours kick butt yoga at the studio and same on Thursday morning+another 3x 1.5 hours light to medium sessions on Monday,Wednesday and Sunday. Add my 3 x per week 2 hours of beach volley off season and 6x per week in season, cardio and some gym I am pretty smashed all the time I generaly do 3 physical activities per day Maybe when I stop playing volley seriously I will concentrate on yoga a bit more
Re: I wish
wow! i feel tired just reading your routine :P
You put me to shame, grumbling about my runs round the park , I'm so jealous to, volleyball players always look super fit and toned, I wish we had the weather for it here in the UK.
