a couple things regarding that article:
1. avant garde? does the new times writer know the meaning of the term, or did the band just tell him thats what they were and he took their word for it? their look and their music is so unoriginal and has been done many times before.
2. was the writer being ironical when he highlighted the fact that the members have "full-rides" at ASU? the whole point of going to a prep school like brophy is to help you get into ivy league schools. if all these kids could get was a whoppin full ride at the cheapest state university in the country, thats not something id be shouting from the mountain tops.
3. they are loving all this negative attention. being snobby is their schtick. it may even be an overcompensation for their own insecurities. i see these kids on campus all the time. they look like they must spend at least an hour on hair and makeup and wardrobe each day just to go to dumb ASU. people that have to go to all that trouble to look cool just to have the confidence to go to class must have some real issues with self-worth. i feel sorry for them. their rich parents probably didnt give them enough attention. at least theyre get some now.

yeah right
that band wouldnt survive a day in NYC. in l.a., sure, because there is a culture there that digs pretention for its own sake, especially if its wearing eyeliner and a hot pink tube top. but nyc would throw rotten eggs at them.
i think the writer was just being ironic using that term to say that taylor's theatrics appear to be an ATTEMPT at something avant-garde. i don't think someone at new times would be that dumb...

i don't usually participate on the message board, but i thought i'd clear up the whole "avant-garde" discussion now that i see it's become an issue...
trust me on this: i certainly wasn't trying to say that xo is an avant-garde band (i've read your posts and agree that xo's look is definitely not original or groundbreaking). but the band certainly sees itself that way. sorry i didn't make that clear in the piece.
for those who read it -- thanks, regardless of your noted opinions on my writing!! and thanks to lb for not mincing words.

I personally like the XO's music. Im originally from CA and this is the only band in the valley that reminds me of home. Its a lot more original than rolling out of bed and playing the same boring stuff I usually hear people playing around town. Who cares if they are spoiled rich kids? Does that mean that their dad writes their music? I'm always confused by the bitter unsupportive attitude of people in this place.

I think many people from Phoenix are spoiled by so many actual entertaining, talented acts, so they tragically can't make themselves care about some boring, cliched faux-retro act. Aw, nuts.

3 minutes ago i assumed that this was exactly the kind of crap that very well could move to l.a. and be adored by that ironic electrotrash uberhip whatever scene. 4 minutes ago i assumed their prepackaged-for-mtv thing might actually work for them because i assumed that they couldnt possibly be any worse than everything else on there these days.
and then 2 minutes ago i watched their video.... and my oh my was i in for a surprise! if i didnt know better i would have thought i was watching some sort of parody or sketch comedy.
