Worth A Million Bucks 1/1 I posted this at PoTL a while back but I am posting it here as well, just for Evie. ****************************************************** Joey held the phone between her shoulder and her ear as she squirmed on the bed, trying desperately to zip up the pair of blue jeans that were obviously a size too small. "Are you sure you won't go with me?" she whined into the phone. "Jo, you know I can't. You know I have…" "Work at 8:00. I know. I know. Call in sick. Dead, even," she begged her friend. "Why is it so important that we do this tonight?" Jen wondered. "Can't you wait until the weekend? Hold off until Saturday night, and we'll raise all the hell you want." "No. Tonight." Jen sighed, knowing exactly what had gotten into Joey. "Did he sign the papers?" "Two days ago, yes." "And how are you dealing with it?" "Jen, think for a minute. I served him. I'm doing great," she assured her, pulling her socks on, while struggling to talk and breathe. "You did. However, sometimes this can be an emotional…step…for both parties concerned." Jen chose her words carefully, not wanting to hit a nerve. "I AM NOT EMOTIONAL!" She hit a nerve. "Of course not, Jo." "I just need to relax." "Harlequin Romances and hot chocolate do wonders for that." "Jennifer Lindley, I am walking out my door in two minutes, and I'm going to the bar to drown my happiness. Should I have the taxi pick you up or not?" "I told you, I can't," Jen insisted, feeling guilty but knowing that she had to keep her priorities straight and keeping her job was pretty high on that list. "Fine. But I will remember this. Someday you will be old and divorced, destined to spend the rest of your life wearing a habit and praying that one day you will find your life again." "Later, Joey." Joey smiled bitterly. "Later, Jen." She hung up and sighed. "I would never turn my back on her in her hour of need," she muttered. She looked in the mirror and noted the dark circles on her eyes. Grabbing a tube of concealer, she tried her best to hide them, then searched for her brightest shade of red lipstick. Once she finished touching, dabbing, blotting, and brushing, she stepped in front of the full length mirror for one final look. "A wolf in sheep's clothing," she mumbled to herself, grabbing her coat from the hall closet, and heading out the door. ****************************************************** "Damn," Pacey breathed, his eyes focused on the tall brunette who'd just walked through the door. Drue turned and followed his gaze. "Out of your league." "The hell you say." "Witter, that woman is worth a million bucks. And you could probably double that if you added the value of the jewelry that's tucked away in a drawer at home." "Well, Valentine, Miss Million Bucks is going home with me tonight," he assured his friend. Drue couldn't help but laugh. "You're crazy." "Maybe so," Pacey said, putting his cigarette out and standing up. "Only one way to find out." Drue glanced over, once again, at the brunette who was just sitting down at the bar. "Why her, man?" Pacey shook his head. "Just something about her." "I see nothing special about her. She's just a woman." Pacey laughed. "Well, you obviously aren't looking where I'm looking." "Whatever, man. I'm about to split. Call me tomorrow and let me know how it goes." "See ya man," he said as Drue headed for the door. Pacey took a deep breath and made his way to the bar, his heart beating faster with every step. He stepped up beside Joey, resting on the bar between the barstool she sat on and the one to her left. "Hey Louie, another beer?" he shouted to the bartender. "Sure thing, Pace." Pacey finally looked at Joey, who was already staring at him, and smiled. "Hey there." His stomach was in knots. He could never admit it to Drue, or anyone else, but picking up random women was not exactly his forte. Joey bit her bottom lip to keep from laughing. "Hi." When he didn't say anything, she continued. "Do I know you?" "You? Me? No. You definitely don't know me." Joey nodded and laughed. "Ok, I'm glad that's cleared up." "Would you like to?" "What?" Joey asked. "Have a drink?" Pacey added, chickening out of his previous incinuation. Joey picked up the cup that was sitting on the bar in front of her. "Oh," Pacey muttered, not knowing what else to say. Louie sat his beer in front of him. "Anything else, Pacey?" "Yes." He turned to Joey and pointed. "Another one of…whatever it is she's drinking." Louie smiled. "Coming right up." "Don't you have friends here or something?" Joey asked, glancing around the bar. "Nope. As a matter of fact, I was kind of sitting…" he gestured towards her. "You were sitting here?" "Well, yeah," Pacey told her, with a sly grin. Joey looked either way down the bar to find empty barstools on either side. "On this particular barstool?" "Umm…" "Well, pardon me then…" she apologized, rising from the stool. "No, no, no," Pacey said, guiding her back to the stool and sitting down beside her. "Keep your seat. I can share." Joey smiled and raised her eyebrows, "Good to know. Thank you." "So what's your name?" "Are you taking a survey?" "I'm Pacey," he said, extending his hand. She took it in hers and smiled, deciding to cut him some slack. "Nice to meet you, Pacey. I'm Joey." "I like it," he commented, holding onto her hand a little longer than necessary. "It's weird," she said, blushing. "It's beautiful." She looked up at him and noticed that he was serious. There was something about this man that was incredibly sexy. She wasn't sure if it was his smile, his eyes, or the fact that he was trying so damn hard to make an impression. "So let me ask you something." "What's that?" she asked, preparing herself for a cheesy, overused, pickup line. "What's a woman like you doing here?" There it was. "A woman like me?" "Well, it doesn't take a genius to see that you are class personified, and this," he gestured around the room, "is not the classiest of settings." "I don't know, Pacey, it has kind of a homey feel to it, don't you think?" she asked, wrinkling her nose then breaking into a smile. "Yes, I guess it does." He retured her smile, patting himself on the back for making a little progress. Louie sat her drink down in front of her, smiling, and walking back to the other end of the bar. "Thanks," she told Pacey, raising the cup to her lips. "You're welcome.” Pacey reached into his shirt pocket for a cigarette, thought better of it, and put it back. "Would you like to dance?" he asked as the fast song blaring over the speakers faded off into a slow one. Joey thought twice but then decided to go with her gut instinct and weigh the consequences later. "I'd love to." He took her hand and led her onto the dance floor. Once they were in the center of the floor, he pulled her close with one arm, resting his left hand in the small of her back and holding her left hand with the other. "So you never answered my question," he whispered, due to both the moment and the close proximity. Joey looked up into his eyes and smiled. "What question would that be?" "What is a woman like you doing here?" Something about this man made her feel comfortable, like she could open her heart. "I just needed to get out of the house for a while." "Rough day?" She laughed. "More like a rough life." When he looked confused she continued. "I'm going through a divorce." "Ah, I see." "It just didn't work." Pacey nodded and pulled her closer, opting to accept that vague answer for the time being. "He was a lawyer," she said, breaking the silence after a few minutes, then she laughed. "A typical lawyer actually. He'd open his pocket book every time he thought I wanted something, you know?" Pacey nodded, choosing to stay silent. "I guess I always just wanted to be a normal guy's girl." She blushed and turned her head. "Ok, that made absolutely no sense." Pacey spoke up for the first time. "It made perfect sense." They danced through what must have been a half a dozen songs before Joey pulled away, reluctantly. She looked down at her watch. "I should go," she told him, an apologetic look on her fact. "Are you going to turn into a pumpkin?" She laughed. "Something like that." "Well, I'm glad you came here tonight. I'm glad I met you." Joey nodded, smiling. "Me too." She walked back to the bar and dug through her purse, searching for the money to pay her tab. Pacey put his hands over her's, stopping her movements. "It's on me, remember?" "Thank you, but…" she began. He pulled out his wallet and put a few bills on the counter. He nodded toward the bartender. "See you later, Louie!" "See you, Pace!" He shouted back, winking knowingly. Pacey just smiled, a bit embarrassed that Louie knew what his intentions had been. However, Pacey found himself genuinely drawn to Joey. He wanted to actually get to know her, but he feared that they would be saying their final and only good-bye in a few minutes. He held her coat out, and she stepped into it. "Thanks." "You're welcome," he answered. They stepped out into the cold air and she looked down the street for a taxi. "So, can I give you a ride home?" he asked, seeing his opportunity to spend a few more minutes with her. He took her hand and laced his fingers through her's. She looked down at their hands and smiled. "You sure you don't mind?" "Not at all." ****************************************************** Joey walked through her front door, yawning. She noticed the light on her answering machine blinking and pressed the button. "Three New Messages," came the mechanical voice. "Message One." "Hey Jo, it's 2:00 a.m. where are you? I'm worried so give me a call when you get in. I'll have the phone by the bed." "Message Two." "Joey Potter, it's 5:00 a.m., where the hell are you? Call me the minute you get this!" "Message Three." "Ok, Josephine, I'm severely pissed right now. I don't know if you're alive or floating somewhere down the creek. Call me at work ASAP!" "End of final message." Joey smiled. How sweet of her friend to be so worried. She yawned again and picked up the receiver, dialed the number, and listened as the phone rang twice before someone picked up. "Jennifer Lindley, how may I help you?" "Hey, Jen," Joey said, sleepily. "Joey Potter, how dare you! Where in the hell have you been? Start talking. NOW!" "Relax, Jen, I wasn't home," she explained. "Where were you?" "I was out. With a friend." "Until 9:15 in the damn morning!" "No, silly." Jen's eyes widened as realization dawned on her. "Joey Potter, you went home with someone." Jen heard Joey's giggle, and her anger flared. "That was so irresponsible. What if he had been an ax murderer?" "Jen, calm down. He was perfectly nice." "Nice? No. Nice men do not pick up random women in bars." "Well… this one did." "Ok, never mind," Jen told her. "I'm just glad you are alright. So what do you say we go out tonight? I feel really bad about bailing on you. Especially since you completely took leave of your senses." "I can't," Joey said, apologetically. "What do you mean you can't? Last night you were practically begging me." "Well, I have plans." Jen narrowed her eyes. "What kind of plans?" "Well," Joey began, "I kind of have a date." ****************************************************** The End. Feedback? "Hello, Darlin'. I'd love to lay you down." ![]() Christmas In Dixie Mayberry Love LettersEdited by: I3rown Eyed Girl at: 3/18/03 3:38:24 am |

Re: Hee! What a great fic! I think it is really hard to convey enough about the past and present in a one-parter for the reader to know where the future is. You did such a great job with that in this!! Keep posting your fics please! ~Lee |
