Wiggy to play 1st & Wright Debut @ 3rd
EW YORK -- The New York Mets called up third baseman David Wright, the team's top prospect, from Triple-A Norfolk late Tuesday night.
Wright is expected to be in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against Montreal.
The move was made after first baseman Mike Piazza sprained his left wrist in a collision at first base with Juan Pierre in the second inning of a 9-7 loss to Florida on Tuesday.
X-rays were negative, and Piazza will be re-evaluated Wednesday.
"We don't think Mike is going on the DL, but we're calling up Wright anyway," general manager Jim Duquette said. "It's our feeling he's ready for the jump. We think he'd capable of handling this level. The timing is right for the organization to bring him up."
The Mets will have to make a corresponding roster move to make room for Wright.
Wright was hitting .298 with the Tides with eight homers, 17 RBI and 16 walks in 114 at-bats since a June 14 call-up from Double-A Binghamton.
Duquette said regular third baseman Ty Wigginton, one of the team's top hitters lately, will play first base Wednesday. Wigginton had two hits and two stolen bases in the loss to the Marlins, raising his average to .281.
Wigginton has been the center of trade talks because the Mets have been looking to promote the 21-year-old Wright.
Wright is expected to be an upgrade over Wigginton defensively, who has the lowest fielding percentage of any NL third baseman (.927). Wright, though, has committed seven errors in 31 games with Norfolk, the most recent coming Monday on a poor throw after leaping to snare a ball.
"It's been written about enough in New York, and talked about enough on talk radio, but I've got a ways to go and I'm not happy right now with my defense at all," Wright told the New York Daily News after the latest error. ". . . I've got to prove to myself and the organization that I'm ready. But right now I really have to prove it to myself. I'm my toughest critic. I'm making stupid errors."
