Why did you become a PT
Hi,
Just wondering what made you become a PT? And what helps you stay motivated and high energy for your clients?

Re: Why did you become a PT
Hmmm, it was kinda by accident. On my quest to transform my own body I wanted to learn more and more. There was so much misinformation in the magazines and books I didnt know what the believe. I thought I had known alot about diet and training but wanted to know more so I became certified through ISSA. I found out I knew next to nothing! Once I had all this new knowledge it gave me a better understanding of why my body was chaning and enabled me to be more analytical.

THis lead to me taking my physique to a level I never imagined! Others noticed this change and I quickly became the goto guy in the gym for tips. I started "training" a few people and they also made amazing progress.

I was the National Purchasing Manager of a large public company. I made OK money but hated the job and was thinking about making a leap into a more physical job to help keep me in shape. It was too hard to leave the pay cheque though, you know how it is when you have bills and a lifestyle to maintain.

THen we got bought out and one by one upper and middle management started getting "walked" eventually it was my turn and now I was forced to make the best move of my life. I started training people fulltime in 99 and from day one have been in high demand. This is the most rewarding career I can imagine, you get paid to change peoples (and often their entire family's) lives. Both from a health standpoint as well as a self confidence standpoint.

As for staying motivated and high energy... Well thats where a little acting skill comes in from time to time. I have good days and terrible days like everyone else but as soon as that client walks up to me any negativity is gone. I am on their time not mine. Some clients that are close to me since we have trained so long can sometimes see through it. Like if Im trying to work through an injury or just not feeling well. You have to keep your client up and by complaining about your problems is not the way to do it.

I always tell new trainers that you have to be like a chamelion with each client. Act one way with one, and another way with the next client. It all depends on the type of person they are, you want to adapt a different approach while still leaving your personality and who you are in tact. I make sure that the hell they go through while lifting is countered by amusing stories and joking around. This makes the hour fly and something to look forward too for many reasons.

Great question, thanks for asking.

What a fantastic reply,
Thankyou so much for shareing that with me:D

It is ashame that there isn't more PT's out there like you!

I am yet to find a PT that motivates and inspires me!
At the moment i am writing my own programs and inspiring myself through forums my blogger and lots and lots of research!
I have also been thinking of studying to become a PT/Fitness instructor through FitNation australia? But i want to be at my goal before i actually start training others as i want to be a role model someone to look at and say "WOW if she can do it then so can i!"

You are a wonderfull example of what i aspire to be i hope one day i am half as good as you:D

I believe that you have to love what you doing..you need passion to be able to hang in there. As you say you have your good and not so good days..but still you are involved with something you love..so it is much easier then for example sitting in the office doing something you absolutly despise:( Pople often do not follow their dreams cos they are scared they won't make it and won't leave their well paid jobs behind (even thou they are not happy deep down).I say GO FOR IT and reach out for the stars. If you trust in yourself you will make it...money will follow eventually:D
Darrin you have come a long way I bet...and look at you now! Soon you will be in such demands that you ill hav eto turn people down or employ help;) You and LA support each other so you are half way there already. All the best for the future:)
BTW Great to learn some more about you. It is always nice to know where the people are coming from and what they have been through and how they came up on top;)

Ciao

Great story Darrin!!

It's amazing that when you love what you do, it no longer feels like work!!

Why did you go with ISSA instead of Canfit pro?

I'm thinking of going more into the nutrition end of it -- how much training did you for nutrition or is it mostly self taught thru trial and error?

It is great to love what you do, HOWEVER it still feels like work from time to time. There can be a lot of pressure being someones last hope to achieve the body they always wanted, especially when they have abused the hell out of it.
I went with ISSA since it was the most demanding course out there. For instance the Can Fit PT cert book is about 200pgs in a large font. The ISSA one is over 700pgs with a smaller font. I have taken both courses and learned WAAAAAAAAY more through ISSA.
I also have the ISSA specialist in performance nutrition cert, but like i said before, all this new knowledge just made it easier for me to understand what the effects of diet and training are. I dont follow the ISSA rules all the time, thats where my own trial and error came in. My approach is exactly that, mine.
IF you want to learn about nutrition go with ISSA as the Can Fit "health and wellness" nutrition course leaves a lot to be desired.

As usual Darrin, thanx for your honesty! That's great info. to have.

I'm sure a bad day at the gym is still better then the best day at your previous job!
