Who would be interested in attending a fleet Academy?
The idea of forming an Academy for the fleet is currently being discussed. Of course, of prime importance is having enough people interested in joining the Academy sim to make it worthwhile. This is just a straw poll to see if such interest exists.
The current proposal on the table calls for the Academy to be both a fun sim in its own right (set at the Academy, on Earth, on training ships, and various training missions) and also a place for people to improve their writing skills, simming abilities, and knowledge of Star Trek before putting it into use in the storyline part of the group.
(1) Would you, yourself, be interested in going to the Academy for either general or specific help in addressing weaknesses in your writing and simming abilities? and
(2) COs, would you recommend the Academy to new simmers joining your ships? Would you recommend it to members who show a lot of room for improving their posting? Are there currently members on your ship that you think would be interested in and would benefit from joining an Academy sim?
Your interest and suggestions would be key to whether or not this project is pursued and gotten off the ground. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
VAdm Robert Seldon, (Jacob)
Chief of Fleet Development
Re: Who would be interested in attending a fleet Academy?
I think it would be interesting to attend the academy to improve writing, I know I myself would be interested in going to the academy...
I'm only an XO but I would recommend the Academy to new members and members whose writing could be improved, I think it would be a good experience to learn more about SIMMing, Star Trek, and writing in general, and it might even make members more comfortable in posting their ideas into storylines, so I'm all for the academy, myself.

Re: Who would be interested in attending a fleet Academy?
Personally, I think a Fleet Academy is a good idea, and I would definitely be interested in helping in it, but my biggest concern is, I really don't think people would get into it. I think it should be used either as a required thing to help a person, or not at all. My biggest problem with it is that people might feel that they are of a lower quality or not as good as other people that are in the fleet who might skip the academy and go straight to a SIM, hence causing people to dislike the Academy and feel that it is for people of lower levels. I really don't want that kind of division in the fleet, and don't think that that in particular would help to strengthen the fleet. If we could figure out a way around this I would be 100% for the Academy.

Fleet Academy
When I first read about this, I thought it was a wonderful idea. But after reading Admiral Dragonetti's comments, I may have to back track. Who should attend? Newbies? Personnel that have been RP/Simming for a while? I feel I certainly could have used an Academy when I first joined the Excalibur, but do I need it now, after a year of playing? Will there be a section for people that are interested in command?
I think there is much here to offer, but it could also be quite the divider.

Re: Fleet Academy
I have often felt that there should be a command school. Before a person can be promoted to Commander or made an Executive Officer they should attend Academy to learn the things most of us seem to take for granted.
1) How to recruit
2) How to design and maintain a web page and group forum.
3) How to motivate crew and set reasonable standards.
These things are trial and error. and should be taught. I remember that I had to lean on Adm. Seldon pretty heavily but that should not have been necessary if an academy were in place. The reason I say commander and XO is that they are close to getting a ship of their own and the Captain can use their help as a little OJT (On Job Training). This wll only serve to benifit the Fleet by benifiting future Captains.
Academy is an awesome idea
Hiya all,
This is Captain Taylor Dorian of the USS AVALON ...
I agree with my XO , Commander Treniek of a Academy ....I think we all can use it...
Fleet Academy
The whole idea of a Fleet Academy is great, but there is also the question of what kind it'll be, and there is always the possibility of there being different kinds or more then one.
I totally agree with Capt. J Britanicus (CO USS Horatio Nelson).
I personally could use the three points he talked about to have under my belt. Even though I am in no hurry to get a ship of my own. But this is mainly because I don't think I'm prepared to do so and the lessons in the areas he mentioned would help a lot.

Re: Fleet Academy
I think that an Academy would be a good idea... For those who need more experience or what have you. I agree with having one for new Executive Officers who do not have those skills down... All of this is preparation for people, and it might be easier to do this then to throw them right into a ship. The fact that some people might feel of lower quality than those who got accepted right off the bat is something that one cannot really get around, though I really don't see anything of that type occurring if you keep with the way that you have it set up. The purpose of this is to have people who are ready for real simming, or command in the case of the Executive Officer idea... I think that it is a good idea, and it would help improve quality in general.

Academies?
If I am reading all this correctly, I think everyone is talking about several academies. Or one academy with numerous departments.
One for the newbies.
One for each position, i.e., Executive Officers, Ops, Engineering, Science, Medicine, etc.
One for Command.
One for writing mechanics.
Personally, I think this mulit-layered Academy is the best way to go, but who will run it? Who will teach? Who has the time? There are times when it is difficult for me to find time to post, let alone attend the Academy, as much as I may need it (and Lord knows I need it. Ask my crewmates. Go ahead, ask them. I will wait.). It can't become a burden to the administrators, teachers, or pupils, or it won't have the impact it should.
And these are the thoughts of a lunatic.

I think it'd be nifty. I was in another fleet where an Academy traning was mandatory, and it worked very well.

Re: Academies
Excellent observations, or maybe I'm not myself today.
If we would have an academy, it would consist of several departments as you mentioned. I've been simming for only a few months, and while it has been working fine for me personally, I wouldn't mind attending an academy as you described there. To gain some skills . . . I'm happy with my departmental post as Chief of Communications as is.
A command department at the academy would be beneficial for upcoming COs/XOs. I'm only a lieutenant and I may try that venue if it becomes open if I decide that I might want to persue something in the command ranks, but that seems unlikely as of now.
I doubt if we have enough people to teach at the academy - we need to find instructors in addition to admin before we can allow pupil simmers to enter - newbies/command applicants/department head applicants, etc. to come and learn.
I'm all for it otherwise - the mulit-departmental perspective that is.
