Where does the dove's tail point...?
For me, modern music (say from the beginning of the jazz age) is a dovetailing of two disparate but complementary schools. 1) The European Classical tradition 2) The Blues and folk/country music of rural America.

There were (and are) myriad influences on those schools (ie classical music has influences from gypsy and Moor/Arab music and American folk has a lineage going back to British and European rural minstrels etc.)

Both traditions had as their base a commitment to musical (and self) discovery; and excellence (and/or at lest honesty and integrity) of artistic composition and especially performance

Two things have had a huge influence over music in the last 25 years. 1) The vast amounts of money to be made from the various mass media outlets 2) Technology (drum machines, sampling etc :\ )

Discussion points;

* have the 2 influences I mentioned swung the core of music (at least popular music) away from the integrity of their traditions

* will the age of the machine and computer eventually render musical instrumental skill obsolete

* where do you think popular music will be in 25 years
