U.S. vacation destinations

Hey guys,

I'll be 21 at the end of May, so I'm pondering maybe taking a trip somewhere in the States this summer.

All the guys are saying to go to Vegas, but I don't think I'd be too interested in it.

Any other suggestions for good vacation spots?

What do you like to do?

What do you want to do?

Since you are pointing out your 21st birthday, I'm essentially thinking you are talking about a drunkfest/party vacation. I could be wrong in my assumption, so please expand.

Also, what type of budget are you looking to stay in?

I've been around the country a bit, especially in the northern lattitudes. So if you are interested in north of the Mason-Dixon line, I could offer some insights.

I've done the bacheolor party thing (not my own) in both Atlantic City and New York City. Between those two, I'd recommend NYC hands-down.

Where are you from and where have you already been?

Re: U.S. vacation destinations

Well, I've actually just quit drinking recently.
I'm from western Cananda.

Where have I been in the U.S., hmm...
I've hiked into Montana
Lived in Louisiana for 4.5 years
Driven from Halifax into Connecticut to visit relatives
In and around Dallas for my aunt's wedding
Been to Florida for the obligatory Disney trip earlier in life
Was in Anaheim for the 1st Annual BlizzCon back in October

So yeah, that's were I've been in the U.S. for any period of time, just off the top of my head.

I think, if anything, I'm into military/historical type stuff. When I was in Connecticut we visited the air museum in.... Branford? As well as one of the Iwo Jima victory monuments in the state.

Guess that's all for now.

If'n that is the case, then you simply cannot go wrong with touring some battlefield sites for the American Civil War. Gettysburg, PA would be my primary suggestion. You could spend 2-3 days just at that site. Then Sharpsburg, MD (Antietam) would be another site not far away. Follow that up with Harpers Ferry, WV and maybe the Shendandoah Valley. If you only have a week, Gettysburg is the thing to do. Go to the Civil War Museum up in Harrisburg, PA (only about 1hr away). You could push it with a day trip to Sharpsburg.

I did Gettysburg a couple years ago and my only regret was not having enough time. I was supposed to be in a reenactment then, but that was the year of all the rain in the region. So they canceled the reenactment in July and made it August. I already had my weekend trip planned, so I went as tourist instead. I simply didn't have enough time. I really needed another 2 days at the battlefield. I especially regret not getting out to East Cavalry Field, which is a must see for any Civil War buff.

Conversely, I was at Sharpsburg, MD for business and had 3 days to tour that field. Which was good. But Gettysburg was much better. Vicksburg, MS was very good as well. I went to the battlefield dressed in my 5th Texas uniform and never had so many pictures taken of me.

If you have the coin, I would recommend doing an Alaskan cruise. If not, Alaska is a fine, fine locale in the summer. Alot of ambling travelers will hitchike around Alaska.w

If you're Canadian, I hear that Cuba is an excellent location for a vacation and that they treat the Canadians very very well. Cuba is supposed to be a very inexpensive resort location.

Just a few thoughts to gobble on.

Washington, DC is great for history and monuments. Gettysburg is a classic as well.
