The War On Terrorism
So it's official: American and British troops, along with the help of 35 other allies, according to President Bush, entered Iraq last night.
What do you guys think about the war and what our guys are doing over there? I for one am for the war, I think it's a sad day but one that was going to come sooner or later, and one that had to occur in order for the world to become safe again.
I just pray for our troops over there and hope that we won't lose anymore people than are necessary and I hope that our troops can rid the Iraqi people of Saddam Hussein's cruel leadership without too many casualties.

Re: The War On Terrorism
I'm afraid I must disagree with you on several matters, first only 3 country are militarily involved, the US with 600000 men, the UK with around 60000 and Australia with 2000 (Those numbers come from CNN so I would guess they are accurate) other country have opened the airspace to Coalition forces (but no soldiers sent).

Also this war by international law is illegal: it has no backing from international institutions such as UN or NATO. But the most important question is this: is it a justifiable war? Only History can choose I guess. What is sure right now is that it will not make the world a safer place, imagine this: for every child, women, brother, husband killed how many potential terrorist will we have?
It's easy for the Bush administration to say this war is not directed to the Iraqi people but to their horrible dictator. But that won't stop bombs falling and killing, they do not after all kill the military and leave the civilians alone, everyone is in the same boat.

Just my thoughts on this conflict. I'd like to hear your opinion too after all we all live in democracies (and I hear that was what the war was about)

Iraq
So far there is no proof that Iraq that has chemical and biological weapons, so why does Tony Blair still want to go to war?

Re: Iraq
The war in Iraq was justifiable, though it would not have been necessary had we been allowed to finish it the first time we went in 10 years ago. War sucks, this is true, but the idea that we need the allowance of other nations to protect our nation and citizens is crazy. The UN and NATO can cry a river all they want, because without the United States in either of those organizations, they would be useless, and are close to that now. It is high time this nation start throwing its weight around, because we need to protect our own.

Iraq..... other Eastern Wars?
I completely agree with you, Cmdr. Carroll. War is never a good thing, but was justifiable, and though I completely support our troops and what they've been doing to try and stop terrorism, I think we need to start worrying a little more about the US's problems than those of other countries. They had good reason for going into Iraq, but I don't agree with us keeping South Africa from a civil war, I think that's something their government needs to work out themselves, rather than allowing us to get involved in a war that never concerned us in the first place.

Re: Iraq..... other Eastern Wars?
Granted, no one's friggin' reading these comments anymore, but still, just on the off chance...

First off, to the USA haters out there (I realize I'm about to come across as a redneck, know-nothing, but I assure you, I am a Senior in College, working on a Political Science degree), stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

No one bitched when we went into Bosnia, and they whined when we DIDN'T go into Africa in what the European world considered "a timely fashion" (The Economist (c)).

So drop this whole "now isn't a good time to be an American, and we should be ashamed," crap. What have we to apologize for? Was Sadaam an evil man who deserved to die? Undisputed. Did we have the right to go wherever the hell we wanted to? We have more nukes, tech, and weapons. I'd say that GIVES us the right. So let's stop griping and accept that this has happened. Deal with it and move on.

Now, that being said, our conduct POST-war has been attrocious. Even the most basic sociologist in the field will tell you that you don't destroy a people's governing organization unless you've got something to replace it with IMMEDIATELY. We've failed in post-war Iraq. Still, all things being said, I think the world's a better place without Sadaam Hussein pulling any meaningful strings.

Oh, and one last comment, and this only because it pisses me off...SCREW THE FREAKIN' FRENCH!!!

Sorry, had to get that out there.

Peace all, and, (as my CO on the Patriot is so fond of saying...) Drive Safely.

And here we see the problem. No matter what we do, someone will gripe. That's the problem with international politics: please one group, everyone else complains. Face it, they'll groan and moan no matter what we do.

Re: Iraq
Lol. This is appears to be a topic here that has generated some discussion. I rarely talk about my political views as such because I'm so introverted. But I suppose it is about time I posted here. My position on the war itself isn't a pressing issue, I was against it. I applauded my government's decision not to join the coalition to go to Iraq, even though I do not personally feel admiration for the current Liberal Canadian government ... especially before our then PM Jean Chretien's leadership and drawn out retirement in December 2003. There is no question that Iraq is better off without Saddam in power. Were we misled in thinking that Iraq had WMDs? Possibly. I suppose that's enough for now. I'll wait to see if someone replies to this topic before saying anything further. Today, well it is still the 19th where I am, is the bittersweet anniversary of the Iraq war. Not a 'good' anniversary ... I can't attach such a subjective word to this topic. After spending several hours in philosophy arguing the connotations of the damn word good I try not to use it that often. Have a nice day everyone.
