The Only university?
Sorry, I'm going to be pedantic here...
There are three magic unis on the Discworld - the one at Krull (CM), and the one on XXXX (The Last Continent)
But the UU is definitly the most respected.

Wow you're good. Currently I'm swamped on reading material. I can't even keep up with info for my own sites!
Must...read...more...Discworld...

Weird, because in the back of the books it's called the "Discworld's most prestigious (i.e. only) school of higher learning" Oh well...It sounded better as only! LOL!
I really should login....
Did the klatchian one get blown up in the course of Sorcery? I need to re-read the Rincewind books...the University didn't know much about about XXXX either did they? Or Maybe its the Ankh-Morpork view that foreingers couldn't possably be doing the whole thing properly?
Could I add any more questions?
Wow, just did!

I think that the one in Klatch was just a Tower... goes to read Sourcery again...
From a quick flick through, it looks like the Klatch one *is* a tower - presumably where wizards go when they finish Uni and don't want to go into Academia... And yes,[spoiler]
it got destroyed (along with the best part of Klatch...)
The Uni on XXXX has only been recently 'discovered' so that might be the reason they have ignored it in the earlier books... And the one in Krull is probably not a 'real' university as it allows <gasp> women to study!

OK - end of Colour of Magic, when Rincewind & Twoflower end up on the Rim - with Tethys the sea troll. They are picked up by a flying saucer powered by hydrophobes. The driver is a female wizard (shock!) from Krull. Krull is the city building the 'spaceship' to go and determine the sex of A'Tuin. It has never been mentionned since...

But wouldn't the tower have been rebuilt by coin at the end?... unless it was built during the events.
What I think I was thinking of was whether the grand visor (or whatever he was called) had any local magical training.... and they have magic carpets, I don't think that's a technique tought at UU, BU or the krull place.

Someone did mention magic carpets before the Patrician got the donkey out the minaret. Checking my post I realise thats a *really* bizarre statement if you haven't read Jingo.

Ummm... not sure. I haven't read Sourcery properly in a while. But I think that the idea of what is magic on the Discworld has changed as the series has progressed - at the end of Equal Rites they *do* allow women into the UU, but this is never mentionned again.
On second thoughts - I think that the Grand Vizir in Sourcery might have been trained at the UU - I seem to recall him saying that they thought that he was mad?

Why the heck would you train up anyone thats grand Vizier material anyway? You'd stop at the slightest hint of manic laughter and the world would be a slightly less terminal place.

I think that most of the people in the UU are slightly mad, so possibly the manic laughter was seen as a side effect, like the Bursar's madness...

Before the calming influence of Ridcully arrived there was a lot of murder at the university.... 'dead men's shoes' was taken as a challenge.... so its quite possible the soon to be grand visor would have fitted in fine.

Well... *calming* by UU's standards.
I guess the thing about the Vizier makes sense, good point.

Re: ffsfsfsf
in sourcery (which, by chance, i just started rereading yesterday) the vizier wasn't allowed into the university because he was mentally unstable, which rincewind found odd considering the state of mind of most of the wizards.
they didn't have a university in klatch. they just had the "wilderness" for that pathetic leader of thiers.
"this wasn't the right kind of place for wizards. of course they had some home grown alternatives, enchanters or some such, but not what u'd call decent magic..."
Universities
The wizards tower of Krull in 'Sourcery' was created by the Vizier under the influence of the Dean's Hat. There is no University in Krull.
Okay, 'Sourcery' got up and walked away on me... But, I was thinking it was Klatch, not Krull... Where's the Librarian when you need him?
