The Grinding-Floor, being a tower, is actually more like a pepper grinder. As the students sleep, some of them fall through the holes and are crushed into a fine paste which is then fed to the centaurs and Hagrid. You have to have more than a little luck to survive a night on the Grinding- Floor.
