System Snag
System Snag
Hal Elmmerich

Hal walked down the halls of the new installation, built behind the old castle. The walls were off white, having a very sterile look and feel to them. He passed by some offices and reached a door labeled “Central,” opening it and walking in. An instant smile followed as he walked in and saw rows upon rows of super computers and networking equipment, their cases gleaming in the overhead lights. This is where he thrived, his world.

Hal started looking around, hoping to be able to solve the problems here in the center systems. If he couldn’t, he’d have to go through and actually check each and every piece of security system equipment in the malfunctioning areas. He found a console about twenty rows down, a nice desk big enough for three flat-screen monitors and a keyboard. As he sat down and hit the space bar, the monitors came to life with information, coding mostly. Hal typed away furiously at the keyboard, his eyes and hands at perfect sync.

“Hmmmm,” Hal said aloud as he read the coding of the security system. Most people wouldn’t really be able to read this coding, not normally, but Hal could. He wasn’t the only one though.
“There,” he said aloud to himself, pointing a finger at a line of the codes. How’s that possible? There’s extra commands here that can’t be changed through coding. I guess I will have to check those areas then.
Hal got up from the chair and headed in the direction of the malfunctioning equipment, the Armory. Hal walked into the room, which was still empty and not heavily guarded. A man walked up to Hal as he walked in, obviously the guard on duty. “Hello,” Hal said, “are you who reported the malfunctioning security system?”
“Yes, sir,” the guard said, knowing Hal and his ‘rank.’
“Can you show me where I can access the main box?”
The guard showed Hal the way and saluted Hal, walking away towards the room he was in before. The access was a small metal door in the side of a wall, which Hal opened and looked in. He took out a small flashlight to see in the darkness of the maintenance access. Shining the light around Hal easily sees something that didn’t belong, and he could even tell right away what it was and exactly how to disconnect it from the main lines. That is what he did, taking the device from the security system.

After checking the system again and finding that it was that device that was making the system malfunction, Hal still couldn’t get the device off his mind. He thought at first it was a simple back-up box, an extra small hardrive connected to the system to keep ‘local’ information. But with further inspection he found that it contained both networking and virus producing technologies. He had gotten lucky, they all had, he must’ve found it before the owner triggered the virus into the center systems. But the question, was who?
