Suffer to write...
This could just as easily go in one of the writing forums but as I'm currently listening to music I'll fit it in here.

We've all heard the line that "you have to suffer to write..." (which actually has a seed of truth in it in some regards.)

Some of the greatest music/art/writing has come from moments of pain in the artist's life. In music (off the top of me 'ead) I think of; Bessie Smith, Billie Holliday, Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson, Beethoven, Puccini, Rachmaninoff, Janis Joplin, Charlie Parker, more recently Kurt Cobain...there have been many others.

So...as a discussion point - is suffering a prerequisite or a key to creating great art? Or is it that artists have a heightened sensitivity to all feeling? Or perhaps an emotional honesty that's close to the surface?

I have my own thoughts on this ;) and would like to hear yours. Some examples and how your arrive at your sense of this would be appreciated.
