Star Trek: Nemesis
I did not like ST: Nemesis at all. The plot seemed to have lots of holes in it and the action was gratuitous. The whole movie seemed to be a rip-off of ST2: TWOK (which they freely admitted they were emulating).

Some specific comments (warning: SPOILERS)

1) The scene in which they retrieved bits of Data's brother, B4, was lame.

The "ions" in the atmosphere or whatever other excuse they had to not use the transporters was really weak (and cliche) and there was no reason to have the aliens attack them. It added nothing to the plot but a shootout.

2) Shinzon's motivation doesn't seem realistic.

Shinzon: "Man, the Romulans have been mean to me! What will I ever do?" ::p onders things for a moment:: "I know! I'll... I'll... destroy the _Federation_!"

Through the movie, you couldn't tell if his ultimate goal was to punish the Romulans or the Federation. I guess the script writers just couldn't decide.

3) Lots of things left unexplained.

How did Shinzon (and his viceroy) get off Remus and out of the mines? Where did Shinzon get his big ship (which was goofily named the "Scimitar")? Why didn't the Romulans take any additional moves to stop him? (We hardly see any of them, after all the senators die in the first scene)

4) The Action was lame.

The newly designed (and cool looking!) Romulan warbirds are lousy. The Enterprise took 5 times as much damage as those ships did and kept going. The one Romulan vessel breaks in half after just a couple shots.

5) Was a total rip-off of The Wrath of Khan.

- The radiation weapon Shinzon had = genesis device
- Death of Data = death of Spock
- Both had a battle in a nebula which caused system problems
- Both have a bad guy seeking revenge
- Shinzon's control of B4 = Khan's control of Checkov, Terrell

In general, I was _very_ disappointed.

I was really excited that this movie was going to -- finally -- feature the Romulans. In the end, they barely did anything (except die in the opening scene and die during the battle scene in their wussy ships). Who the heck are these Remans anyway? Answer: a race that nobody cares about.

The movie did _awful_ at the box office and now I'm sad that I left a very fun Christmas party early to go see this movie with friends (had I known how bad it would be I'd have suggested we go to the cheaper matinee showing). The _only_ scene that stands out in my mind as being "kinda cool" now is the opening death of the senate scene. After that, it was down hill.

I've only seen Nemesis once but now I'm eager to see Insurrection a second time. Neither was very good, however, and the future of the TNG movie franchise is very, very seriously in doubt. Even before the release of the 10th movie Patrick Stewart said he'd like to wait a few years before they do an 11th film -- if they ever did one -- and that was when he was talking about how great Nemesis would be.

I think I mostly agree with you about the movie. I actually did go see it matinee on opening day with a couple of friends. I thought it was fairly entertaining film, but also disappointing on several levels. While it’s definitely an improvement over Insurrection, it still falls far short of the bar set by earlier Trek films. Here’s a little insight I have as to why certain points of the plot didn’t seem to fit/flow:

In early 2002, www.imdb.com said the plot was going to be about Shinzon leading a rebellion of Remans against the Romulan Empire. Sounds pretty interesting to me. Then during the summer, they said it was about the Romulans planning a surprise attack against the Federation. My first thought was something along the line of, “Wow, those are some pretty drastic changes – they’ve basically changed the whole plot of the movie.” After watching the movie, I think it’s clear that they tried to merge the two stories together and they just weren’t too successful.

I bet it was a pretty good script originally. It’s sad that so many good screenplays do get screwed up in production when executives try to turn films into something they’re not. I bet that’s what happened here (though I could be completely wrong). It also looks like it was shot pretty well and I thought the cast didn’t do a bad job. I think the main problem was just trying to turn this movie into something it wasn’t. The result – a cloudy mess!

Re: Nemesis
Well, I have a hard time with this topic. Nemesis is the first Star Trek movie I have ever seen, and I actually enjoyed it, but I have never been exposed to the Star Trek videos like the rest of you have. I am sure that if I had watched TWOK or something else, I might have had a different opinion, but as of right now, I have enjoyed it.

Re: Nemesis
While "Nemesis" was not ST II or "First Contact", it wasn't ST V, either (which, in this man's humble opinion, was the WORST TREK movie EVER). I enjoyed "Nemesis", though it was certainly not in the upper echelon of Trek movies. The really surprising thing to me was how much my wife liked it. She goes to all things Trek, out of a sense of obligation, I believe, but she really grooved on "Nemesis". She found it exciting, tension-filled, well acted. I thought the SPFX were ok, the acting very good (with Stewart & Spiner, it would have to be well acted). The script was not the strongest, nor was the direction, but I think the franchise, from a filmic standpoint, is starting to peter out. Who would the next film feature? DS9? Voyager? Enterprise? Someone we never met?
The answer lies in the stars...

Put ti this way, I think your very lucky, my mother won' take me to see it and I'm not allowed to take the bus into Newcastle coz of the state of the public transport systems, I also reading Seldon's comments will ahve to agree with you about the rip-off about the Wrath Of Khan, even though I haven't seen that.

Oh and going off the subjec- Great SIMM. I have my own (sakura_fleet.tripod.com/home) but at the moment, I have only two members, bummer hey?

Nemisis
Whatever happened to going to the movies and having fun watching it. I think too many people overanalyze movies and then they become no fun. I have enjoyed every Star Trek movie made, even the odd numbered ones. I try very hard not to overanalyze movies when I see them, especially ones like Star Trek, Batman, and similiar movies in which I have a more than average interest in. Nemisis was fun to watch and I look forward to adding it to my Star Trek Movie collection after May 20th when it is released for home video. nuff said.

Have a good day and Drive safely. :rollin

Nemisis....best ever?
Hi all.

I have seen Nemisis for the first time on DVD and I have to say, what a fantastic movie! I cannot agree with Seldon in any way apart from the Wrath Of Khan point.

1) The Emmotional Edge- Many fans said that the movie was crap because the emotional edge was sacrificied for a more action packed feature, while true it was an action packed film, the emmotional edge was there, more than ever. The secene in the room after Data's Death was poignant as was the B-4 scene at the end and Picard walking out and the final shot of the Enterprise.

2) Shinzon- Some fans have said he a rubbish villian. Tom Hardy proved a fantastic villian and as did the Viceroy. He was so convincing I actually nightmares the next night!

3) The New ships- The Valdore-Class ships were brilliantly designed. Going to Seldon said, the ships were beaten up because Shinzon knew where the weakspots were and could therefore beaten the poo out of them. Also going to an earlier scene with the Scimtar's Tactical Analysis- do you really think a tiny ship like the Valdore could actually hold out against a ship with 52 Disruptor Ports and 26 Photon Torpedoes and Defended with both primary and Secondary Sheilding.

4) Worf, Geordi and Crusher- They had there parts to play and they did it superbly. They were well in there and you don't needs words to make ur presence felt.

I hope I can change a few people's mind. Nemisis is the Second Best film after Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. I would have said First Contact but I was severly dissapointed by it and therefore rate it after ST V, which is the third best movie!

Disappointment
Nemesis was the film I long awaited. Having the Romulans as the main focus in a movie was something that many of us long time fans have been waiting for. Unfortunately, the movie sucked. :\ I am sorry, I expected a lot from this movie, especially considering the fact that they had the Romulans, and were saying this was going to be the last movie with the TNG cast. The movie was a total rip of Wrath of Khan, and anyone who has seen ST2 will concur. Look, the movie was a disappointment on all points. It didn't do a good job explaining anything, gave no real emotion, and the battle scenes were too predictable.
I can say that the new Romulan vessels were cool, and the fact that Troi and Riker finally got married is good, but then they didn't explain or explore either very well at all, so again, it is in the crapper. The movie had a great chance to be great, and they dropped the fall, big time!
