Slaver Gets 70 Years
A man was sentenced to 70 years in prison today in the the brutal beating of a woman he held as his sex slave in a downtown hotel.
Jimmie Wellmon, 39, was charged in the Feb. 11, 2006, attack on a 26-year-old woman who was beaten, bitten, kicked, strangled, and burned with cigarettes in a room at the Adam's Mark Hotel.
Denver District Judge Catherine Lemon called Wellmon's crime "egregious."
"This is an attack that went on for hours, with breaks in between so the victim could recover consciousness," she said. "It was absolutely astonishing in its brutality and the level of wanton cruelty that led to this attack."
Wellmon, who represented himself during the trial, made no statement at the hearing and showed no reaction to the sentence.
Prosecutor Bonnie Benedetti called Wellmon's abuse of the victim in this case "brutal, deliberate, self-centered and selfish. This is a man who holds himself above the law," she said, in asking for a lengthy sentence.
Wellmon was convicted in September on charges of attempted first-degree murder in the hotel attack.
He also was convicted of witness intimidation and tampering involving another woman he tried to prevent from testifying at his trial. He also tried to get her to bribe the victim in the beating case not to testify against him. Wellmon convinced the woman to marry him while he was behind bars and she wrote a letter to the judge asking for leniency.
The 26-year-old woman told police that Wellmon broke a wine glass and cut her with it, threatening to slash her throat and make her eat glass.
She said he burned her eyelid and other parts of her body with a cigarette. He also put her in a tub of scalding water and tried to drown her, she said. Clumps of her hair were found in the hotel room.
The woman said he became enraged and beat her up after she paid a $100 room service bill that he ran up while she was out working as a stripper a job he convinced her to get. She suffered a broken eye socket, and her body was badly bruised.
Although the trial focused on the beating, police also found notebooks in which Wellmon detailed his training methods for the woman, who was to call him "Daddy," remain nude when they were alone, kneel before him, walk behind him and speak only with permission.
In one of the notebooks, the woman completed an assignment to write, "I love my Daddy" 200 times. She signed letters she wrote him as "your slave."
