Secondhand shops
There's nothing better for a neighbourhood than a good secondhand CD and tape shop. I don't have a good one but I have a half-decent one. If I drop in on a Saturday there's always something to buy. A while ago I decided I wanted all the early Bowie stuff I used to have on vinyl. Then I got obsessed with early Stones. I'll be obsessed with something else by tomorrow so I guess I'll pop in as usual.
I tend to like second hand shops in general, they're like mini museums to the 'everyday'. Good place to get writing ideas too, using ordinary mementos as keys to visualising those who once owned them.
As for second hand music stores; since I rarely listen to much recorded in the last decade or so, I'm in my element in them. And CD technology has vastly improved the general quality of second hand fare.
Mention of Bowie; the first album I ever bought with my own (pocket) money was "Alladin Sane." I still have it on vinyl, just don't have a turntable any more.

Re: Secondhand shops
i love second hand shops. i recently moved from new england to NY and i've been music deprived. i broke down a bought a cd today for $20 bloody dollars! for crying out loud, that's enough to take my arm and leg.
watch me go home and find the same cd for 9 bucks or something. the store's called Newbury Comics and they have them all over new england. like half the store is used cd's and videos and some dvds, and random other stuff, and i'm rambling.
newbie post. hi everybody.
a strange mix of innocence and sin

hi del!
I've always wanted to live in New England!
Of course buying CDs and tapes 2ndhand is great but...
Two of my friends have just burnt me the new Bowie ("Heathen") and the new Bryan Ferry ("Frantic"). Umm, I guess that's another issue. I don't really have an opinion about it because I'm not a musician putting the stuff out. I'm not out any cash -- in fact I have way more bucks in my pocket!
I know, I know -- it's stealing. Isn't it? Or are my friends just a couple of Robin Hoods giving to the poor??!! lol
damn, I'd love to get this music forum happening...
