New to this forum, I have to say since it's release in 1989 Say Something Good is still my favourite album of all time. Walking on Ice is just fantastic.
My question is, have any of you guys seen RCP in concert. I managed to see them in :
Bradford University (twice I think)
Manchester - The Boardwalk
Birmingham NEC Oct 1991 ( Supporting OMD)
I agree with some earlier posts, just how did they not make it big considering the drivel that was around in the charts at that time. I miss real music like theirs today, still listen regularly to both albums, just wish there were more.

Re: Concerts, favourites
you lucky things! I never saw RCP live I'm afraid. Hopefully Siobhan will be doing some shows (there is an empty tour info section on her bit of the Gravity records website ) so one day hopefully!

Concerts
HI guys - just discovered the website! I was lucky enough to see River City People nine times during their short career. I can distinctly remember Bradford University, where I shared a beer with the band. I also remember 8th October 1990 at Leeds Polytechnic. I Siobhan and the band several times and have both copies of Say Somthing Good (both the first and second release) signed, as well as every single up to Special Way. Siobhan was always kind and chatty, and I was such a pain that she began to recognise me. I attended a signing session in Liverpool and loved I'm Still Waiting from the first album. Love Immigrant Flower, too. Bit short though?
9 times and a personal meet ! I loved RCP. When I said I listened to Say Something Good, I obviously didnt listen enough. I cant get ' When I was Young' out of my head all over again. God I love this album. Went into Manchester tonight, and stood in front of the Boardwalk 'building' near Deansgate Station. Wow, I could almost hear them playing.

Not often I get to brag about having gone to so many River City People concerts, and I thought noone would believe me. I can distinctly remember Bradford University and Leeds Poly, and it wouldn't surprise me if I saw them at the Duchess of York, too. I attended a signing in Liverpool once as well. As well as 'I'm Still Waiting' - a frequent concert opener - I loved some of the B-sides live - Find A Reason and Huskisson Street in particular. I find it hard to remember all the gigs in detail as there were so many in such a short time. Much of the earlier ones were the same sort of thing. Siobhan didn't talk much between songs, but Tim Speed had a great presence. Sorely missed.
Re: River City People Concerts
I agree with the Tim Speed comment. I managed to find a site that had samples of the stuff Siobhan has done on Immigrant Flower, but it is just a bit too country for me. Which only strengthens the writing impact that Mr. Speed had on the group. However, I wish her every success with it. It would be great to se her tour with such success and maybe travel down memory lane.
The best of the gigs I saw as I remember was in fact the Boardwalk, because it was a small venue, about 250 people and I was right at the front. Some of the photos don't do Siobhan any justice.
Immigrant Flower
Have to disagree with the comments on Immigrant Flower. I think it is a good strong album and surprisingly the original songs on the album I find the strongest. Siobhan's voice hasn't altered - she sounds fresh and enegetic. My views on country music have changed recently. I was a bit blinkered on it. But there's some good stuff out there, including Siobhan's stuff - try Kasey Chambers, Dixie Chicks or Alison Krauss. Its all pretty mainstream. However, wonder what theSpeeds are doing now. Looks from the sleeve of Immigrant Flower that Dave Snell still keeps in touch with Siohban.
Cheers!

Re: Immigrant Flower
Yeah, definitely give Immigrant Flower a go... even if you really hate country Siobhan's voice carries it through. I think it sounds even better now than ever before, really pure and beautiful.
And it's not out-and-out country, I think the only song that you'd play at the hoedown (yeehaw!) is "Promise You Anything", and even that's not like the classic country & western sound.
There's a lot of great country and alt country stuff around, none of it too twangin'. A lot of the time it's hard to categorise. And I was brought up with a lot of music by the likes of Johnny Cash, Lynne Anderson and good ole Dolly so I don't mind country anyway.
But anyway, Immigrant Flower is one of my fave albums of 2002!

Re: River City People Concerts
new here,im glad to know all you RCP devotees.i saw support f/mac at maine road, manchester.they were fantastic.i would say they made hall & oats, next on,look rather pathetic.i love all their stuff, only wished the record label would have stuck with em.texas are a pale imitation..G
RCP Concerts
I too saw RCP support Fleetwood Mac and they were the best support of the day. I saw RCP at Wembley along with Hall and Oats who were ok but I had to suffer almost an hour of Jethro Tull who were crap and I thought their set would never end. It's a shame RCP split so soon.
i consider myself very lucky indeed as i have seen the band four times in concert. All in Glasgow.
First time was in at King Tut's on a Saturday night, the same day Siobhan had appeared on Sat morning BBCtv doing a silly contest called Shaky Jake or something.
The band were awesome.
Second time was in Mayfair in Sauchiehall St
Third time was supporting OMD at the Royal Concert Hall
(didn't stay to see all of OMD set - i was happy enough)
Lastly, i saw the band at Strathclyde Uni around about the time 'This is the World' came out.
Not only that but i met Siobhan after the first concert in King Tuts and i've got her autograph. She wanted me to meet the rest of the band, but i had somewhere else to go and i said no -- absolutely £$$%^T crazy!
I met them again at a record signing in Virgin in Argyle St, on the day of the OMD concert.
We got talking about the album and the 'Special Way' track and they were not exactly happy with the indie remix that the record company had produced. Controversal or what.
The band had the making of being one of the top bands in the country. Their music was fresh, uncomplicated and melodic. I always describe them as similar to an early Texas.
look what happened to them. RCP could easily have ecliped Texas.
i know it's dreaming, but it would be great if they got back together for a series of concerts. As the song says 'What's wrong with Dreaming?'
Re: RCP in Concert
that's very interesting - i was never too sure about that Special Way remix either!! I remember there was a Kylie remix out at the time (yes, I admit I used to buy Kylie 12" records too) and it had the same "I love you" sample on it. One of a few reasons I thought it was a bit crap.
And very interesting hearing about all your live RCP experiences! I was never lucky enough to see the band live myself.

Re: RCP in Concert
i saw the twice, first time at greenbelt festival in august 1990, met them all as well. Well siobhan and tim they said would we like to meet the others too so we went into the backstage area bit. I had the original version of the say something good album with me which they all signed. Then saw them again a few months later, Sept i think at manchester university. The played the la's album all the way through whilst we waited for them to come on, think they were supported by 29 palms. We met them again after and we were well chuffed when they remembered us from festival a month previously. They were both pretty special shows, in fact i had a bootleg of the green belt concert but i think i may have recorded over it!!! sorry. They did a really good cover of "the last time"
