Rebirth
Rebirth
Razel sits quietly in a guest room on the Vis Vires lead ship, the Valiturus II. Smoking a cigarette and slouching in a leather reclining chair, he thinks about Pavidus and the past and awaits the moment that he may regain his former self…his normal self. Almost falling asleep, Razel hears the door to the room squeak open. Jumping up and unsheathing his sword, Razel opens his eyes and sees Pavidus standing at the door frame, his trademark smile defiling his face, “good as new.” Silence for a moment as Razel holds his sword out to Pavidus, then he sheathes his sword, “let’s get this over with.” Razel walks past Pavidus, and down the hall to the elevator awaiting them both. As Pavidus steps into the elevator, Razel stops him from getting on, saying, “I got something to do first.” And with that, the elevator doors slide closed.
In the med room Kalios preps a machine, checking diagnostics and making sure it’s in working order. Pavidus talks with Auray in a corner of the room about Vis Vires’ next moves, while Tae sits on one of the beds, sipping at a cup of tea. Razel walks in and everyone’s attention is turned to him. Pavidus walks toward him, twisted smile and all. He’s getting great pleasure from this, Razel thinks as Pavidus stops a couple of feet in front of him. “Well, my old friend, are you ready?” Pavidus asks, waving a hand in the direction of the machine Kalios currently is working on. Razel looks at the machine and visibly cringes, bringing Pavidus a sick expression of joy on his face. Razel turns his attention back to Pavidus, “first, explain what you’ll be doing to me.” Pavidus walks over to the machine, caressing his hand over a lard dome-like device connected to the main machine. “This machine rids you of select…unwanted…memories and replaces them with more, let’s say, agreeable ones. You will be put into an induced sleep, and this machine will extract the unwanted memories from your brain. Then it will program new memories in its place. It’ll be like nothing ever happened.” Razel nods, showing understanding. Pavidus turns to Kalios, “Is the machine ready?” Kalios looks at a display on the machine, it showing all systems ready for activation, “yes, everything is prepared.” As Razel sits in the chair next to the machine, Kalios fills a syringe with a clear liquid. Razel looks strait into Pavidus’ eyes as he stands over Razel, “if I’m not inside Spera, alive, in ten hours…not only will Spera self-destruct, but the twenty highly explosive bombs I’ve planted all over the ship with also.” Pavidus smiles, “don’t worry, I have no reason for killing you.” For some reason Razel believed him, something about Pavidus didn’t make him think he would kill him while he was asleep in a chair.
After Kalios injects the needle into Razel, he begins to feel light-headed and drowsy. And then, almost immediately he was asleep, the last thing he hears is Pavidus saying, “goodbye, s…” Darkness surrounds Razel as he slumbers, a calming darkness which makes him feel almost relaxed. As quickly as the darkness came, it went, revealing Nette sitting in a chair across from Razel. He realizes he’s in his old London apartment, before he had to sell it, and before Nette took her own life. He did never get to tell her his secrets, the true reasons from his sullen outlook on life in general. Sure he had told her A story, but not the truth, not his true past.
He knows it’s a dream, but he feels a need, a desire to tell her. “My mother and father met in college, at a party my mother wasn’t even supposed to be at. It’s the usual story, I was a mistake, the result of one drunken night of passion. My mother’s family was extremely rich and powerful, and when they found out about my mother being pregnant, they kept everything a secret, not wanting anyone to find out about their daughter’s dirty little secret. They let her have me though, not believing in abortion. I was delivered by their personal doctors, secretly in their own home. I have no birth certificates, no records of my birth at all. They wanted it that way. I was forced on my father, he had to take care of me on his own, which for him was hard coming from a poor family. My entire life I lived in this apartment,” Razel looks around at his dream induced surroundings. “My father took care of me my entire life, but I got to see my mother every once in a while. My father worked as an accountant, making just enough to get us by. He never really progressed in the field, though, as he was a quiet person. He let people walk all over him, never said a peep against other people’s words. I remember how pathetic he was, a real loser. I had a pretty normal life, once I was old enough I went to school and I had friends and girlfriends throughout my entire life. I met Elisa in my sophomore year in high school, she a cheerleader, me the captain of the basketball team. So typical. We fell in love, and throughout the rest of high school we made plans for the rest of our lives, what we’d do after graduation…” Razel stops for a second, looking at Nette’s face, which remains blank. It’s just a dream, Razel.
“The day before graduation, I came home from a pre-graduation party at a friend’s house. Something felt different as I walked into the apartment, something I couldn’t pinpoint. I called for my father, but he didn’t answer. Knowing he had to be home, I searched the house for him, and then walking into his room I found my mother laying on the bed with a machine on her head. Wires all over the place. I went to take it off of her but my father, who was standing in the corner of the room, stopped me. I could tell he wasn’t himself, he was…different. I asked him what he was doing, why my mother was hooked up to the machine. He smiled and said he didn’t want to be Alexander Nirana anymore, he wanted to make a new life for himself. I tried to stop him, but he pulled a gun on me, threw me a wad of cash and told me to forget everything. I didn’t know what to do so I left, ran to Elisa’a house. Once there I called the police, but by the time they got there my father was gone, along with my mother. Then they told me that MY apartment was completely empty. Seems the deed of the apartment was made out to me, leaving me ownership of the entire building. I tried to find my mother, but I never knew where she lived, I was never told where she lived. So I forgot about her, knew I’d never see her again.”
“The next day I went to graduation with a heavy heart, shaken from what had happened the day before. After graduation Elisa and I decided to stay with our plan, I was to go to Earth Sphere Security to help pay for college later and she was to go to college right away on her parent’s buck. So I joined up, got through boot camp fine, learned how to pilot MS’s and hand-to-hand combat. After about a year in E.S.S. I visited Elisa on leave, and that’s when she told me that she didn’t want to be with me anymore. Broke my heart. After that I went AWOL form E.S.S., figured it was pointless to continue the plan. I got a job at a restaurant near my apartment and made small amounts of money there, just enough to keep me from loosing the roof over my head. One day a man walked into the restaurant and ordered some coffee. We got to talking, he was a mercenary for hire, and I found he was quite famous. His name was Alent Laren. He took me under his wing and trained me to be a merc like him, we were the best of partners, and even better friends. One day we got hired to hunt down a terrorist known as ‘Pavidus,’ and we found ourselves on a ship in space. We split up and for a while it seemed like I was being herded inside the ship. Doors opened, lights showed the way. Then I walked into a pitch black room, the lights flickering on as I walked in. There, standing in the middle of the room, my father accompanied by Alent. I was shocked, didn’t say a word. Then Alent took a step forward saying, “should I kill him, Pavidus?” I blankly stared at them both, then attacked Alent. He quickly beat me, as he always had in training. Before he was about to kill me Pavidus, my father, stopped him and I ran, left the ship. Haven’t seen Alent since.
Nette’s face remained blank, a cold stare that bothers Razel. She opens her mouth and speaks, “what about your mother? Did you ever see her again?” Razel sighs, “yes, though I wish I hadn’t. About a year ago I took on a mission for the Queen of England. When I walked into the castle I was shocked to see my mother sitting on the throne, wearing the Queen’s crown. Now I have to see her all the time, and I can never even bring it up that she’s actually my mother. But I’m glad I can protect her at least.”
Razel feels a rush of emotion as Nette fades away, leaving him in darkness. He begins to cry, curling up in a fetal position. The feeling soon fades itself, leaving nothing at all. Except for the darkness.
Razel’s eyes suddenly open. He finds himself in Spera’s cockpit, floating in space. He stretches and yawns, smiling at the great feeling. That was a good nap, he thinks to himself as he starts up Spera. Grabbing the wad of cash off his lap he smiles and thinks, “life is good.”
