Pauline Kael
One of the great movie critics (a very small group ;) ) died in 2001. Sometimes she took it all rather too seriously but she was so often on the mark with her comments and viewed cinema (and the arts) as something far greater than just entertainment. Any of her collections of reviews are worth picking up - check your local library.

She rated Robert Altman's "Nashville" as perhaps the finest American movie of the 1970s, which for me was a pretty good call.
