Well...I tend to enjoy American Blues and Italian 'Bel Canto' opera (primarily from the period of the 1890s to the 1920s, or 'The Puccini era' I suppose we could say.)
That may seem like something of an er...dichotomy, but I don't see it that way. The two forms are natural, and ultimately - quite simple. At their heart they are music for music's sake; a search for honesty, truth, beauty.
Least favourite genre; don't really have any though I'm fair stumped at the attraction of Rap and Hip Hop (beyond their echo in every generation of youth rebellion.) To me, whatever Rap and Hip Hop are - they lack an essence of musicality, of the essential elements of music. They still qualify (I guess ) in the way that Pollock and Rothko still qualified as 'painting' even with so many traditional artistic elements missing, but barely.
Other than that, I can appreciate a piece from any genre that has heart, melody, rhythm, or a sense of poignancy of lyricism. (Oh and a decent guitar solo of course )

Rap and hip hop make me vomit. Is that an allergy?

There is usually something in every category that I can like. Probably country is my least favorite but I love Waylon Jennings. In somewhat mainstream (what you might hear on the radio), I am crazy about Sting. Moby's South Park is good. I loved Santana"s album he released 2 or 3 years ago with all the different young artists. I am crazy about Dave Matthews Band. There is even rap that is interesting. Tupac Shakir had some stuff with very strong and poetic lyrics.
Re: Ad Nauseum
There is not a lot of music I dislike enough to mention here.
I could mention rap and hiphop of course, but neither of these two vomitous social constructions is actually music. Just the chant of disaffected youth.
Not wrong in its own right, just wrong in any list of 'music.'
There's a mind-numbing sameness about it all. Hideous, childish posturing and, in a lot of cases, the deliberately offensive and insurrectionistic lyrics (can I call them that?)
But what bugs me most of all is the hypocrisy. Millionaire performers looking like small children in their father's baggy clothes, climbing out of limos to sneer and rail at the system that made them wealthy.

Pete, you said a mouthful! And I couldn't agree more. It's just a lot of haterd and anger spewin forth, well, I won't say any more about all of that, I'll just leave this one alone, lest I offend...
Rock is my usual choice of music, it's what I clean the house to, drive to, jam to. But I like all kinds, really. Country, R&B, Techno, Disco, some Pop, Reggae, Classical, Celtic... I can even tolerate polka in small doses. (Hey, I'm from Pittsburgh, I was raised on it lol) Like Pete, I draw the line at Rap There are a few selected songs that I like, but less for their sound than the memories they bring (high school friends). I also detest "smooth/modern jazz" but I'll listen to the old stuff any day. Also that tinny, instrumental music - not big band, not the 'surf songs' of the 50s and 60s, the stuff in between. ughhhh

Do you still reside in Pgh? (I'm living between Johnstown and Altoona now, and have lived all over the nation)

Well, the storm kept me out here in the boonies afterall. What a bust...*sigh. I was actually going to visit my friend, Corey - we have been 'sisters' for going on 16 years now (since 4th grade) - and possibly my Mum and Dad. Both Corey and my Dad live in Baldwin, which BTW is where all 3 of us graduated from (Tho I'm a Brentwood girl at heart)
What part of the Burgh did you grow up in?
And here's kind of a weird question, but it could lead to some interesting stories - what are your favorite places in Pgh?

Traumaddict.....I think that sounds like a fun topic but maybe we should start a new thread. If it is in here.....best places to hear music in the Burg. Or if it is general maybe we should put it in Everyday Life since it is a bit off topic.

Agree. Hoever, you and I will likely be the only ones posting on it. (Which is OK too.) So I'll start another thread along those lines.
With Sand's permission, as moderator of this forum I really don't mind if we get off topic - many an interesting discussion has taken place that way. But for newcomers especially, it can be impossible to see when this has happened. I feel like I've missed out a bit when I see a thread with a title like "Name your Favorite NBA Team!" that has like 5 pages and if you click on page 5, people are talking about moose hunting in Canada!

Buddy Guy? Whoa, now that's blues. There's a track called "Blues at my Baby's House" on his "DJ play my Blues" album that is stone cold brilliant. I saw him in concert about 91-92 or thereabouts.
