POLL: Should Boy Bands Be Banished?
Well, should they? How do you feel about a group of men who were hand picked out of a crowd based on looks etc to form a group of sorts? Is it a deception of the public, of millions of screaming 11 year olds who really think these guys are 'good buddies' and oh so talented?

:lol

:::searching for the ban button, searching for the ban button::: ;)

For me, the most disappointing aspect is that such 'phenomena' are really just another front for "$$$ Inc." There was a surge in the last few years of imitations of the Spice Girls (spooky as they themselves were just imitations) that got way out of hand. I'd class this under the same umbrella.

I read an article once about the 60s band 'The Monkees,' that said (paraphrasing) "the TV network got sick in the end of the band members complaining about instructions from 'on high' and wanted to play some actual music of their own. The network then canned them, and replaced them with 'The Archies' as it was figured that cartoon characters couldn't talk back."

I think we may have reached that state now...in much of music.

:lol I suppose that in order to conduct a truly fair and scientific (**grhumph-giggle-snort) poll, it would help if the question were not asked in such a manner as to betray, without question the pollsters own ideas and opinions...

There is nothing 'wrong' with music for music's sake, for the fun of singing a catchy tune with a good beat. However, I have respect for artists who do write and sing their own music. It was such a let down to have discovered (as I did recently) that even Garth Brooks does not write most of his own music! The same holds true for many country western singers - so many are just pretty faces that can also strum a guitar. :(

Saw a photo recently of Garth Brooks without his hat on. Whoa...shock. The dude actually has a top to his head, independent of his hat! A man learns something new every day.

Speaking of :hat , reminds me of a scene in Cormac McCarthy's novel "Cities of the Plains" where the ranch owner - a cowboy all his life - wakes in the morning and sits up. He puts on his Stetson hat, rolls himself a cigarette and then he looks around for his clothes. :lol

Yep, good point, actually. I'd like to see some views from someone who's into 'boy bands' and/or the modern music scene to give us some thoughts. Be interested to hear from teens etc...

There's a great line by Albert Einstein;

The thing that I dislike the most about the younger generation is that fact that I'm no longer part of it.

:lol

(Y'notice I just had to get that whole 'Einstein' thing into the conversation some where.;) ) Now...about neutron stars...

Oh yeah, you & Einstien.. lol

And that's exactly it, too. We are no longer a part of that carefree, energetic crowd whose tastes converge with what's new and different. I can't help but remember the fact that at one time, the music I like best now was new and different and controversial. Now it's tired by a high school sophomore's standards :\

Over the summer, I was lucky enough to spend some time with my younger brothers (10th & 11th graders) I thought I was hot @#%$, 'introducing' their virgin little minds to Ozzy and Slayer. They were both very mannerly and listened to the fine art for a few tracks before begging for me to put in "Now That's What I Call Music!" As "Larger Than Life" blared from the speakers of my truck I felt old and somewhat withered. I had a vague, fleeting recollection of my father playing well-worn Uriah Heap tapes in his room, declaring to me, "Now that's the real stuff!" and walking around banging his head... I am saddened to think my brothers must feel the same way about my music.

The weirdest thing of all? I was talking to my mom a few weeks ago and she said she was fliiping the TV channels while my brothers were at school and a block of Limp Bizkit videos were on. She said, "Y'know, Carrie, I kinda liked 'em!" THIS is the same woman who years ago threw out my David Lee Roth tape because he had long hair!!! The part of me that has not yet made it thru puberty did some silent foot stomping that day... :lol :lol :lol

I don't like the boy bands but the 14 year olds need something to listen to. :)

boy bands and todays pop
Not my music..Britany, Christina, Back Street...heck there isn't much that I like about any of them. My parents felt that way about the Beatles, Kinks, Who and Doors. They could not understand why anyone would listen to Cream.. or Dylan. So I do ban them from my cd collection but try to understand that other people (kids) like them and it is not up to me to understand why.

Re: boy bands and todays pop
A few years ago George Harrison referred to the Beatles as "The Spice Boys", but of course they weren't hand-picked but the early merchandising was pure boyband. The Monkees were a boyband for sure, but they had great pop songwriters writing for them, and some of their singles were/are great. "Steppin' Stone" for instance. The Sex Pistols did a blistering version of it. And the Pistols were such a *refreshing* boyband! :-)
