Ode to the weird and wondeful
spread across the discworld we hear of many wierd and wonderful creatures and peoples.

They vary from the mundane ;such as talking dogs, and thingies from the dungeon dimensions; through to the wacky and eccentric - one of my favourites, the hydrophobes of Krull, and even cohan (he can be considered a creature right?)

now i figured that this was as good a place as any to discuss the weirdest, the coolest, and the most favourite of these cool characters.

now i have to say that i Love gaspode as a character... i can just imagine TP walkig down the street one day, and seeing this dog staring up at ihm. this poor little dog is staring so intently at the sandwhich in his had, it almost as if it's trying to learn telepathy jus so it can get at that sandwhich. gaspode has the distinct advantage that everyone knows that dogs can't talk.

and then there's nany oggs cats (it was nanny og right?) Greebo. "most cats when backed into a corner have 2 options. fight, or run. Greebo however had a third option; become human!) What a wicked cat!!
i have aprx 8 of my own, so i'm a big cat fan (which i why i support grim in the mocking of u'r MAD dog scarlet :b )

anyway, updates everybody

One which sticks in my mind is the Shadowing Lemma, which stalks mathematicians.

i think its mentioned in Sourcery.

Re: Ode to the weird and wondeful
I adore both Gaspode and Greebo!

Gorgon was quoting from one book- I believe Sourcery- about the vermin. I'm far to lazy to try and look it up but it had something to do with the vermin's pelt be prized by many people, but even more so by the vermin itself.

Re: Ode to the weird and wondeful
Ah, the vermin, a distant relation to the lemming which tends to absail down cliffs, and hang arround looking embarrassed when they come to an impassible atretch of water, before leaving early to avoid the rush.

Mentioned in a couple of the earlier books... probably ones including wizards because of the vermin robes thing, so I'll take a punt at saying: They appear in S and RM. Hopefully I will be right, thus increasing my aura of omniscience.

Presumably one day a lemming, like the tortoise, will fly.

rob, who has doubts that impassible is a word, but feels it should be, and who is also slightly annoyed at a new insidious form of pop-ups

Whoever designed this type of popup for for stupid dictionary terms should be shot. So there. I get annoyed rather easily when it comes to unnecessary clickage. Anyway that quote about the Vermin might be from the light fantastic or sourcery, I really can't remember. It went something like this: Many prize the fur of the vermin, but none as much as the creature himself. That greedy little bastard will do anything to keep their hands off it.
'
I liked it because fur coats are bad.. and evil. It's like Jeffery Dhamer with animals. (He was an icky guy who killed people and made lamp shades, furniture, and other apparel from their skin) *shiver* I know you're soo much the richer for this information.

Fur coats are evil!

I'm glad you fixed up the quote though- I was a tinsy bit out of it.

Oh and I have to say these new pop-ups are bugging the heck out me too- I'm just about ready to scream.

Like my random lines of posting?

Re: Ode to the weird and wondeful
i swear to anyone who's listening, hat it was a vermine, not a vermin, who was closely related to lemmings and liked weaaring its own fur.

and that is my favourite quote, so u r quite right in supporting it :b

Re: Ode to the weird and wondeful
OK, I've gone to the fount of all stuff, and according to the companion:

Vermine. A small, mlack and whhit relative of the lemming found near the hub esp. the ramtops. Its pelt is rare and prized, esp by the vermine itself; the selfish little bastard will do anything rather than let go of it. Fur used for trimming robes, esp. by wizards.
It is a more careful relative of the lemming, it only throws itself off small pebbles. The point being that dead animals don't bread and current vermine are decended from those who, when face with a cliff squeal the rodent equivalent of 'blow that for a game of soldiers'. Vermine now abseil down cliffs and build small boats to cross lakes. When face with a seashore they sit around avoiding each others gaze and then leave early before the rush [S, WS, RM]

looks like a got two of the books right, but the spelling wrong.

hope that clears things up.

rob, who almost copied that verbatum from DWC

Now I know what is missing from my bookshelf! (TY SPF for taking off the evil html...I can now post without being kicked off every other post!) I'm going to go hunt down a Discworld Companion...

Oh, that quote was from Sourcery ^_^ I loved all the creatures that the Luggage brought an end to in that book...that was a laugh-out-loud moment!

Ditto! I've never seen them at BN. I'll try and hunt one down when I order the Pressed Fairy book.

Re: Ode to the weird and wondeful
I'd suggest you don't rush out and buy it yet. There's a third edition out at the end of March (in some sort of strange more-expensive-than-a-paperback but still backed-with-paper format) A proper pb version is out in December.... maybe a hogswatch present...? (although you'll also be asking for Monstrous Regiment at that time).

On the other hand I'm still coping with my first edition... and you may be able to pick up a second edition cheap as it is about to become outdated.

rob, btw, the new one has a nice cover: images-eu.amazon.com/imag...ZZZZZZ.jpg

I love the Librarian!!!

But, is that one of those screwy things where it has a nice, pretty cover in England, but we get a sad pathetic cover here in the states? *cough cough* Night Watch

Re: Ode to the weird and wondeful
The good news is there doesn't seem to be a ghastly American version of the cover. The bad news is there may not be an American version at all.

terrypratchettbooks.com (the website for terry's US publishers) only mentions the Companion obliquely deep into the site, and amazon.com (as opposed to amazon.co.uk) only features the current 2nd edition (with the propper Josh Kirby cover) which has to be ordered from the UK.

How much paraphernalia do you tend to see in the US? do you see the maps and diaries in shops?... or the graphic novels and t-shirts?... or Thud?

I'd expect that if you can get the maps you'll probably be able to get the Companion.

No, I've never seen anything Pratchett in stores here. Just online. *sigh* The Jasper Fforde saga is getting a bit sad. We've even asked the school librarian.

As Lisa whined, the second one is not out here yet. He's coming to WI in April, though, and we are going to the signing (duh!). We tried to order the books over amazon.co.uk, but we entered an 'invalid postal code' and no one here seems to know what constitutes a valid postal code. Any suggestions?

Re: Ode to the weird and wondeful
Well, postal codes in the UK take the form of two letters, two or three numbers, then another two letters. eg mine is IM33DA

You could try something of that format, but you may need a real one.

Alternatively you could try getting it from one of the companies here:
www3.addall.com/New/submi...spCurr=USD

Amazon.ca are cheapest... and closest

rob, who always uses addall.com when buying books online
