News: Wee Free Men
Iknow some of you read DWM, but in case you don't, I stole the following from them:
Colin Smythe, Terry's agent, has provided us with publicity blurb
from the American edition of THE WEE FREE MEN, which is to be
published next May.
--------------------
"Another world is colliding with this one," said the toad. "All the
monsters are coming back."
"Why?" said Tiffany.
"There's no one to stop them."
There was silence for a moment. Then Tiffany said, "There's me."
In a thrilling tale that is equal parts suspense and humor, Carnegie
Medallist Terry Pratchett spins the story of a young witch-to-be
named Tiffany Aching who must journey through the terrifying and
ever-shifting dreamscape of Fairyland to rescue her kidnapped
brother.
Armed only with a frying pan, Tiffany is all that stands between the
monsters of Fairyland and the chalk country that is her home. Her
sole allies are the Wee Free Men -- a clan of sheep-stealing,
sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men, as fierce as they are funny.
Together, they battle through Fairyland, where reality intertwines
with nightmare, before confronting its absolute ruler: the Queen of
the Elves. And in the ultimate showdown, Tiffany must face her cruel
power alone...
(HarperCollins are planning to publish an edition of TRUCKERS,
DIGGERS and WINGS for the American market in Fall 2003.)
----------------------
The UK edition, which apparently has a superb Paul Kidby cover will
have this to say:
There's trouble on the Aching farm - a monster in the river, a
headless horseman in the driveway and nightmares spreading down from
the hills. And now Tiffany Aching's little brother has been stolen
by the Queen of the Fairies (although Tiffany doesn't think this is
entirely a bad thing).
Tiffany's got to get him back. To help her, she has a weapon (a
frying pan), her granny's magic book (well, 'Diseases of the Sheep',
actually) and ---
'Crivens! Whut aboot us, ye daftie!'
--- oh yes. She's also got the Nac Mac Feegles, the Wee Free Men,
the fightin', thieving', tiny blue-skinned pictsies who were thrown
out of Fairyland for being Drunk and Disorderly...
A wise, witty and wonderfully inventive adventure set in the
Discworld.

According to Amazon, its out on 1st May.
IIRC I dug out some other snippets on WFM and posted them elsewhere, if you're interested.

i remember him saying on the interveiw thingy that this one would include them.
i also remember him talking about "monster patrol",the one to be released after we free men - a guard book for all u guard lovers.
hmm... ever since reading lords and ladies, i've kept a horseshoe above my door (not a special blinky one, but still iron all the same) (i'd like a blinky horseshoe) (god i'm messed up)
how is the salmon of doubt. i've read all the rest of the HHGTTG but TSOD looked to be completely seperate.
anyway, by the end of mostly harmless i was getting disillusioned with HHGTTG... they severly dropped off after "so long and thanks for all the fish"

I assume you mean The salmon of Doubt, not The Science of Discworld Well, if you haven't read the two Dirk Gently novels (Dirk Gently's Holistic detctive agency and The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul) then you should. They're good. The Salmon of Doubt was going to be the third in the series, but not enough deadlines had passed before DNA died ( ) so unfortunately it is very unfinished. The book of that title which is currently out includes about 10 chapters of that novel, and a selection of articles written by DNA, along with some random stuff found on his Mac. Its all entertaining stuff, but I found it slightly depressing reading of things he intended to do, and reading with the knowledge that this was his last work. I remember the same feeling when I read ... The Vicar of Nibbleswick (i think its called) by Roald Dahl shortly after his death.
kept a horseshoe above my door
Just out of interest, is that a custom you hadn't came across before reading L&L? If so then I'll remind you that a horseshoe is not required in DW lore, simply a piece of iron stuck on the door, and if you're following the more earthly lore, make sure it doesn't fall upside down (ie like an 'n' or else the good luck will fall out.
monster patrol
I hadn't heard anything about this, and a bit of brief digging could find nothing. However, today I got an email about 'Monstrous Regiment' which is the title of the next 'adult' DW novel, due to be completed this month by TP, and published in November. There's not a lot out there, but what little information I could find, and a bit of speculation is below:
"it's about a girl who disguises herself as a man to join an army " (TP quote, including the smilie) and imcludes a strong cameo by a certain Ms Weatherwax
"Unless things go really wrong, both Otto and William de Word turn up in Monstrous Regiment. As I've said before, journoes are as useful as coppers in this respect -- they're easy to introduced into a plot." (TP again)
Whilst digging I discovered that there seem to be quite a few books called something like Monstrous Regiment, but the origonal source is a paper written by John Knox in C16 when both england and scotland were ruled by women entitled "The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women" This may or may not be relevant.
------
Even before Wee Free Men, the 3rd edition of the Discworld Companion is out at the end of March.
After Monstrous Regiment, well.. quoting Terry again:

Horseshoes and Unwritten Texts
Yeah, your description of Monstrous Regiment sounds like the description of Monster Patrol that Terry gave us.. Mebbe its a different American title, (they bugger with the covers.. why not) or maybe he just changed his mind on it. Anyway, same book, for us Readers in Unwritten Texts
By The Way.. Squirel's horseshoe *is* upside down, from memory. Better make him change it.
The Broken Drum
I'm a freak, an aggrivation. It seems I made the right decision.

newsworthy items
There have been very few posts in the last month or so... almost a negative number, in fact (and scientists have recently discovered a way to play with quantum and create a negative number of electons, so that is possible... but that's not entirely relevant)... so i've decided to post this to spur anyone who may be popping in occasionally to post something.
In the back cover there is the usual brief biography of Terry which happens to mention that the bromeliad is 'being made into /a/ film'. as opposed to three films presumably, with some editing of the story required.
Anyway.... WFM hs now been out for about a fortnight. Needless to say its good.... another 'tale of the discworld' which publishers think means it is aimed at kids, but simply means its written in chapters. A Nac Mac Feegle clan feature heavily, which is fun, and a couple of Lancre witches appear near the end... but I won't go any further into that incase I spoil the ending The villains are .... Lords and Ladies.... who appear to have the same biography as those in L&L, but, in my opinion, don't feel like quite the same creatures.
Also published recently was the New DW Companion. I haven't bought it (...yet...) but have flicked through it heavily in bookshops. It seems to be shorter than the previous version, but contains lots of the information about various institutions which has previously only appeared in the diaries... the explanation given is that lots of info on the one line charachters has been removed.
At the back is an interview with Terry. He's asked about the killing off of chacters and Granny is mentioned. Terry said something like '...well, she is getting harder to write stories about...' so maybeshe should start to watch her back...
For completeness I should probably also mention that TSOD2: TG is now out in paperback.
Finally, if anyone is reading this could they post something, otherwise I'll stop checking this board.

I really liked that book!
Okay, that seems really random, but when I first picked it up, I thought it looked a bit odd. (Now you're all staring at th e screen wondering what the heck I thought his other books were.) But I did! I hadn't been totally into the Nac Mac Feegle; I had thought they were neat, I guess, but I had my reservations about a book against them. Shows what I know!
I think I even liked it more than Amazing Maurice, though I suppose I have to reread that one to be sure. It just...was really neat. Wow, I sound repetitive...time for stupid American jokes again!
I think I'm trying to make up for ignoring this for, like, a year or something...*hides* And I think it was the coffee...I knew I should not have had the coffee...

New news
The next offering from terry (after Montrous Regiment, a DW portfolio, a calander (but, I think, no diary), MR-the play(premiering, as usual, in Abingdon)... and probably one or two other things that have slipped my mind) is another Tiffany Aching story which features Granny W more heavily. Other details, for the moment are scant.
There's another Monstrous Regiment out there, this one written by Laurie R King. For a while I was confused - thought they were the same ("why's TP writing about Sherlock Holmes...?") but now I can't wait.

Re: New news
Terry has a minor habit of this. Night Watch was going to be callled 'The Nature of the Beast'... until someone released a book of the same name a few months before, and an autobiography about some women who walked across all the continents (I have it...somewhere) called Feet of Clay was released around the same time as FoC
Wee Free Men was going to be called 'For Fear of Little Men' early in the writing process. I'm not sure why that changed.
