New Fleet Publication, the "Independence Review"
To anyone interested,

I am going to be putting together a new publication for the fleet (and possibly portions of the larger simming world) that will deal in a scholarly and peer-reviewed manner with the big simming questions of our time. The publication will be called "The Independence Review" and will likely come out quarterly, as opposed to monthly, but that may change depending on how much material and interest is generated.

I am looking for people who would be interested in being contributors or even just reviewers for the publication.

Some of the topics that'll be discussed (one per issue) will include:

-- Multies
-- The best command style
-- The role of a fleet and of ships
-- Posting styles
-- The Optimal size of a crew
-- And others...

I will try to have at least two opinions on all issues discussed and will draft a list of questions that should be considered by contributors who can tackle all or any of them. Each article will be reviewed by at least one other person (along with myself) for clarity of ideas and presentation. Unlike the fleet newsletter, the Independence Review will have it's own Yahoogroup and will only be sent to people who request it.

I'm looking for people who'd like to be on the editorial board, who'd like to regularly contribute, and who would just like to review articles (though contributors will also be reviewers). I think that the publication will be beneficial for the fleet and that the process will be very helpful to participants.

If you are interested in this, please e-mail me at seldon11988@yahoo.com. Please post any questions to this thread or e-mail me with them.

Thanks in advance for your interest.

I believe this is will a great for for people to express their opinions on the many different facets of SIMing. Everyone has their own opinions concerning any topic from 'what makes SIMing fun?' to 'Multies' and of course everyone isnt going to agree...but we can share these ideas and learn from each other and through this I think anyone who is willing to pull their heads out of their asses and subscribe to this review would have a great learning experience that can easily enlighten all those who subscribe, write for, and review for...peace

I would read it, but I'm not confident I'd have much to add of interest.

Thought of the Day
Its sounds good. And as I am starting my own SIMM, think it could help.

Hmm...
Sounds great but why a seperate publication? Why not just have it as a part of the fleet newsletter?

For instance a section called Feature of the Month could be added to the newsletter. Every month we have a new feature and at the end of a year we have people vote on a new feature that will become a regular for the newsletter.

But I'm just a lowly engineer. I'm sure you've got much better ideas based on the feedback already.

Re: Hmm...
Lt Cmdr Taminar,

It never seriously occured to me to incorporate the Review into the newsletter, their purposes are not at all alike.

The newsletter is just that, a device to inform fleet members of what is going on in the fleet, etc. The Review is to be a simming journal where issues concerning simming will be discussed and debated.

Further, the Independence Review will be too long to be successfully integrated into the newsletter, it will be long enough to be its own independent entity.

And lastly, being separate will allow the Review to have its own independent publication schedule that won't be tied to that of the Newsletter.

I appreciate your question. It has caused me to reconsider the idea but I believe that the current plan will work out better due to the reasons outlined above.

Of course I didn't mean to add an entire simming newsletter to the already weighty IDF newsletter but I suggest a trial run of features that that this newnewsletter might have.

Since we are all simmers, IDF as a whole might benefit from discussion of certain simming topics such as posting styles. Placing that info into a section called Feature of the Month or perhaps Simmers Corner where a different topic which would be given every month.

This however is only a suggestion. If it is the wish to keep such information exclusive to ship CO's where it might be deemed more helpful to guiding first time simmers then by all mean do so. However, I do mention a special feature section since creating another newsletter would be time intensive and might not have a large response.

Interesting
I would have to agree with the lieutenant. It might help everyone, rookie and vet SIMmer alike. I would love discuss different issues, command style, what constitutes a good post, lots of issues. Could be interesting. On another note, Jacob has a good idea with his second letter.
