I have never had a job before, and only recently have I been getting into the job scene. Since I have never had a job before does that mean that I still have to file taxes at the end of the year? Any input would be well appreciated, thanks.
If you worked in the year of 2005 you should be receiving a W-2 from your employer. This form will give you all your information.
Whether or not you made more or less than the minimum required salary, I always advise to file a tax return. If the bottom line is zero, this is called an informational return. You will find later on that you will save yourself a lot of headaches.
All W-2's are filed with the IRS from your employer. It goes into a computer and doesn't look at the amount on the form. The IRS will notify you that you didn't file and it's a pain to get them to correct it.
The good news might be that you will get a refund.
Re: Never Filed Before...Help...Question
So, even though I never made any money ever...period...I still have to file? Taxes are nothing but a headache, lol.
Re: Never Filed Before...Help...Question
That's not what I said. If you didn't make any salary in the year ending 2005, you do not have to file. If you did earn a salary, yes you do.
Re: Never Filed Before...Help...Question
Ah, I see. Thanks for the help. One more question though, if I never made any salary at the end of the year ending in 2005 do I have to pay state tax?
Re: Never Filed Before...Help...Question
Since your situation is pretty simple you might want to try to file online. H&R Block is letting people do it for free (not sure if this is too public). Here's the link - www.hrblock.com/taxes/par...4_5_222021
Re: Never Filed Before...Help...Question
Hi Carol,
While H&R Block is filing federal for free it is not letting you file your state without a charge. You are also limited to Tax Cut software. I don't like Tax Cut. They have had too many failures in their software.
You can also go to the IRS link and file for free. Check your state for free filing. I am sure they have it.
