Napster, Grokster, Goodster or Badster?
I had a couple of hundred tracks I'd downloaded from Napster before it hit the road to the elephant's graveyard. I'm now using Grokster, which seems superior in most areas.

So...how do you see file swapping sites for music?

In your opinion are they;

* a cool way to get aquainted with music you don't know or are only peripherally aware of (with an eye then to buying complete CDs)

* a handy way to get hold of odd tracks that you'd never go to the expense of buying whole CDs for

* stealing money from musicians

Your thoughts please...

I'd have to say All of the Above!

In reality, I doubt very much that musicians are losing much money. Most people do not want to go to the trouble of taking the time to download a few songs then put them on a CDR. It's cool when you have the equipment and the time, but otherwise, most people would much rather just go buy the CD. Now if someone or some album was just a one-hit-wonder anyhow, few people I know would actually go out and buy a hard to find CD just to hear "Mexican Radio" or "Take on Me" lol

On the other hand it's not totally unimaginable that some kid with a lot of time on his hands might make a profit (at very little loss to the artist) downloading his own version of a "Greatest Hits" CD, making tons of copies and selling them to friends.

As much as I love Metallica, I find it ironic that they became popular in large part due to bootlegging of their demo tapes. They were underground/word of mouth popular. Now that they have made their money, all of a sudden, it's time to screw everyone out of a major convenience because they might lose a few CD sales? What a shame.... Lars, you lunkhead....

Another thought - I wish we still had DSL! downloading tunes was sooo much easier then... and if you got a bad/crappy recording, just dump it and start over again. We'd have like 5 going at once, lol

I will have to check out Grokster - sounds cool!

Yeah, all of the above is probably the most sensible answer. Mention of Metallica; when the controversy with Napster began one of the band members (was it Lars?) said that he was against it because it was "prostituting our art." :eek

I think when a heavy metal musician comes out with a phrase like "prostituting our art" - maybe he's had a few too many 'lost weekends' in the company of Mr Jack Daniels. :lol
