Myspace: a place for self-important, self-egrandizing, self-effacing, self-loved, self-deprecating, self-discovering, self-ish people.
*For those out of the loop, myspace is an online social network. You start with a myspace page, consisting of pictures of yourself, what you're like, your interests, and a portion dedicated to people you've made your 'myspace friends.'
Then there are groups. There are groups on everything: high school kids, vegetarians, Bush lovers/haters, I hate WalMart-ers, Gay & Lesbian support groups, antique car enthusiasts, etc. etc. These groups are generally a waste of time.
Then there is the blog (a 'blog' is a "Web log," or journal) aspect: my most-used portion of myspace. Tell people what's up. Complain about your coworkers, fill out surveys (waste of time), post songs that relate to your life at this moment, tell a funny anecdote that happened on your way to work/school. You get the idea. People can read your blog and make comments, if they're your 'friends.'
That said, I have two myspace accounts. I use myspace for the following purposes:
a. blogging, which I love.
b. to keep in touch with out-of-state/out-of-country friends, via messaging, profile reading, and the aforementioned blog. (My favorite use)
c. to network with fellow activist-type people. (I have met these people, btw)
d. to announce my shows, i.e., Second City student showcases and S.E.T. performances. (No one has come based solely on this, but I have gotten 'good luck' comments.)
e. for story ideas, particularly from the high school crowd. (This has worked.)
f. to get my mind off work (when, granted, it should be ON work)
g. reconnecting with long-lost friends from high school/seeing what high school enemies are up to (VERY successful)
h. learning cool new recipes, where bands are playing or movies are showing. (one of my fave recipes I found on myspace. Yes, I just said 'fave')
Things I've heard myspace be used for:
a. Ranting and raving and pretending you're the smartest, coolest person ever.
b. spying on exes.
c. discovering cool new bands, local or otherwise.
d. dating.
If you have no interest in yourself or others, then I can see how you would have no use for a myspace account. But, don't knock it til you've tried it. And don't try it unless you have some level of self-control; it's addicting.
And I'm not even going to address your career path, which basically made no sense.
And I won't pimp out the people on here who also have a myspace account. You know who you are; look me up if you haven't already! It's under the name 'sonyarose everett.'
