Re: My pet peeve--Rice cakes!!
Rice cakes are bad because they are super high GI. You wouldnt eat Wonder Bread but there is no difference. Hell, even the chick on the "Crispy Mini" ads is fat. As far as your body is concerned you may as well be eating spoon fulls of sugar when you consume rice cakes.

The thing about high GI foods is that you get a spike in blood sugar, when this happens your body produces insulin. When insulin is present in your system it is IMPOSSIBLE to metabolize body fat, all you can do is metabolize carbohydrates. Thing is, your blood sugar levels get lowered by the insulin and unless you have glycogen depleted muscles at the time that blood sugar is sent to fat cells.

I would never let clients eat rice cakes, as far as I am concerend it is a low calorie cheat food. Not healthy at all, there is little to no nutritional value to them. If you need to consume a complex carbohydrate make sure it is a moderate to low GI not a high GI one.

buffone, you wonder why you feel you have to do cardio all the time. Maybe if you ate less fat storing high GI treats like rice cakes you wouldnt need as much cardio. Its all about staying in the fat burning zone when dieting, not putting yourself in fat storage mode, which is exactly whats happening when consuming rice cakes.

Sorry about the bad news.

I understand they are high GI....but recently I've gotten some advice from well...let's say someone who has dieted a few times themselves...they said that if i carb deplete then after a workout consume 4 rice cakes it will actually help in my contest prep diet..what is your take on high GI carbs ONLY AFTER A WORKOUT?

High GI carbs post workout are exactly what you should have. Ideally they would be a simple carb and not a complex one for even faster absorption.
