--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was finally able to get my garden in a couple of weeks ago. It was so wet I couldn't do anything til it dried out. Its gonna be a late one, I hope everything gets going in time. Most of the stuff I have is ready to harvest in 60-90 days, so I think it will be fine. I usually get it planted by mid May.

Tom,

What did you plant?

That is something I miss, this is the first year I will not have fresh tomatoes, and other good home grown vegrtables.

My daughter and I planted 4 different varieties of tomatos, lots of broccoli, yellow squash, corn and zuchinni. It was a good time. My little girl cracks me up. You gotta remember, she is 4. We had just planted the zuchs, and my neighbor who is in his late 50's was outside watering his lawn. My little girl runs up to him and says "We just planted lots of bikinis!" I tell ya, his jaw hit the ground. I was laughing so hard I watered the dog.

Yes they are. I have had a major weed battle going on for two years, and I am starting to win. I don't like using chemicals, so it is a weed picking, plastic laying battle.

ooooooo, Cathy I have a great recipe for zuchini bread too!!!! After many different recipes, I finally found one that doesn't taste like all that oil that goes into most.
Hey Tom, good for you.....here I am an avid gardener and this year couldn't get most of the seeds I needed to plant......sigh. My garden looks pitiful this year........but at least I got a bunch of brocolli, some mild jalepenos and tomatos (started in the greenhouse) in the ground and used what seed I had left over from last year. I'm going to miss those fresh green beans, peas and such, but that's okay.........God is still in control. I , too have a weed problem.............bind weed ( wild morning glory) it's is invading my garden and I finally found a solution....it's a "hard working" one, but since my garden isn't full planted this year.....I'm going for the cure......you have to till the ground every 2 weeks and discourage ( hard to discourage bind weed) the weed so it finally gives it up. It's worth a try, cause this stuff is terrible, it's a vining plant that suffocates anything it manages to get it's little tendrils around....nasty stuff.
Lenn, I wish sometimes I had someone else doing all that work and have fresh veggies too!!!!!! :lol

I love to garden, but am just not able to anymore...but we have the amish here, just a few miles from me...they grow great vegetables and at a great price...they use no chemicals either..so I just go there and buy my vegetables, I bought 10 dozen ears of corn the other day and put it up in the freezer, it took me from 1 pm until 10 pm just to get it all shucked and cut off the cob...but it was well worth the time spent...it is too much for me, but my grandson loves it..so he always has corn when he comes to my house....

I also went and picked wild blackberries, finally got about a gallon, and made jam out of it....I enjoy doing things like this so much...

Oh, wow, wild blackberries!!!! you are sooo fortunate to live where you can pick those. I love to make jam too. To be honest, I NEED to till up that bind weed, but haven't had the energy to do much out there at all. It's a weird year!!!!! I usually have this great garden, with a big variety of veggies. I start freezing them as soon as they are ready ( after the fresh veggies are chosen for eating, of course). It is usually kept up and weeded, ect. But this year is very different and I only have a few things planted.......have to have my fresh brocolli ( gonna miss the homegrown peas, greenbeans, burpless cucumbers, ect. ect. Got some zuchini in and a few tomato plant, oh, yeah and carrots. But that's about all. the rest of the beds are covered with weeds, just waiting for me to get the energy to tackle them. Gotta do it soon! We have a Lot of farmers that grow sweet corn out here, so I usually do what you do. It DOES take a lot of time to prepare for the freezer, doesn't it!!!! Did you know that summer squash only has to be cleaned cut and bagged, before freezing? It actually is better that way, but I don't recommend that process for the other veggies. I have an aunt that swears that is okay.........but we got to sample green beans frozen without blanching first and they were TOUGH!
Happy Berry picking, By Grace Only!!!!!!!!(oo, wish you could toss me some

Blackberry picking, that takes me back. We used to have a lot on our property when I live in TN. Up here in northern Ohio, you know what they do? If they find blackberry bushes on the property, I guess it ain't good for them because they spray killer on them and burn em when they dry. People here are nuts!!

Took me forever to find a place that sold self rising flour. Know where I found it? An ethnic food store. I didn't know being a hillbilly was ethnic.

I sure do miss the south.

I love Huckleberry's the most they are great. Use to pick them in Montana and now that I am in Idaho. I will need to find someone to show me where they are.

I started a small garden with only 5 plants. the tomatoes are looking good. and my squash started out well, but the only squash I see seems to be getting smaller not larger. what is up with that? We also planted some hot peppers. We are going to make some salsa.

Now fruit trees is another story I am going to start a post. Lots of questions.

Hey looky, looky, we're BACK.........Hackers!!!! STOP THAT!!!!!...............LOL
Well, My granson and I have been getting out and playing, pulling weeds, playing, trimming perennials and trees, playing, cleaning up the perennial garden, playing.............LOL, guess who did most of the playing. rolly polly's have always held such fascination for kids......that and mud.....LOL
Yesterday I had my head down pulling weeds and I heard SNAP, then THUNK! I looked over and grandson had decided to grap a thin weeping branch on our weeping willow, and swing on it......he found out the hard way the weeping willows are weak in that department.............LOL. Fortunatly, he was very close to the ground already and fell on grass.....LOL.....He got up ( he's 3) and said I'm alright, I'm alright........LOL...he's so funny!!!!!!!! He's almost 4 and now instead of getting all hurt, he gets up dusts himself off and says I'm alright, I'm alright....hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe
I feel soooo much better now that my perennial garden looks better. I started building it in June of '96 after hubby's back injury and we lost his oldest son. There was a whole slew of things that happened after that, one right after the other and none easier than any other.......that garden was my retreat. I would go out and dig prairie grass ( the area I made this garden in was just prairie grass and a willow tree) I planted trees, made walksk, surrounded the beds with mountain rocks and started planting. there are areas that need some big work, but the main area looks much better now!!!!! We got a little rain and along with it cooler temps. so it was easier to work!!!!! Now I need to tackle what little I have in the veggie garden and see if I can't till and till, until the bind weed gives up......hopefully make it easier for next year!!!!!!

Yes, they have asked me about all that stuff. I told em I put the outhouse over a running creek, that makes it an automatic flusher.

It was a fast running creek.

Seriously, when we moved to a country place in TN in '75, the house that was there had no running water, they had a well out back. The did have electricity. The outhouse actually was built over a small creek. The lady that lived there was in her 80's, and got around just as good as a twenty year old. I think she lived to be close to a hundred.

Some kind of grub got all the corn, chopped it off right under the dirt.

Squash, tomatos and zuchinni are growing good, the rabbits got the broccoli and the carrots, and I need a bigger dog.

sorry about your corn. The only thing that seems to work is what I call the big guns ( Diazinon). It's nasty stuff, but effective and won't hurt the crop, you just have to keep kids and dogs off for awhile. If you ever use it, get the granules, then you just spread it over the soil and water it in.
Rabbits.........that's pretty easy ( sometimes)......go to the local barber, haor stylist wnatever they call themselves these days..........LOL and get all the human hair you can. Then spread it around the perimeter of your garden..........they don't like the smell of humans.....you can use dog hair too, but don't shave the poor thing bald just for rabbit control..........LOL
I'm having a lot of problems with bugs too, guess it's the drought conditions. Last year was bad too..........I think the Lord held our hand on the farm because he knew even if we could do it, we would have to use too much insecticide just to get a crop!!!!! that would have eaten up any profits!!!!!! God is sooooooooo wise! And I thank Him for saying NO sometimes!!!!!!!!!!!
Things on this earth are changing: bugs like crazy, floods where it doesn't usually happen, drought, temps, ect. Makes it hard for a gardener, but just think of the beautiful garden we don't even have to sweat over, in HEAVEN.............WOOHOO!!!!!!!!! Ready, Ready, Ready!!!!! Praise be to God the Father!!!!!!!!

Tom,

I am also sorry about your corn. Home grown corn taste so good. I am glad your Squash, tomatos and zuchinni are growing good.

I never heard about the hair before. What a good idea!

That Diazinon works great for all bug problems.
