My Experience
Yesterday as I was traveling back from western PA, I thought I would try to get a peek at the Laurel Hill tunnel. I passed the western access road too quickly to stop. I slowed down slow enough to access the eastern end of the old ROW. I slowly drove on the old ROW. The Pa tpk uses this stretch to store concrete barrieres.
I passed a sign which read "Authorized vehicles only" Just as I made a final turn and could see Laurel's eastern portal, I noticed a trailer up at the entrance with a vehicle outside. I turned my car around to leave when I saw a turnpike maintenance truck pass me, traveling towards the tunnel, I drove out towards the turnpike and I saw the truck following me. with his yellow lights atop his truck flashing.
He stopped at the entrance to the old ROW. I split.
When I got to the eastern side of the Sideling/Rays abandoned highway. I was able to drive onto this section as well. I parked and walked around a high earthen berm and found a State Polkice target range. I could have driven all the way on this piece but felt uncomfortable especially after the morning's incident.
If I were to drive on this section would I be ticketed?
Does the pa tpk retain ownership of any of it?

Still belongs to Trpk.
The tunnel at Laurel Hill still belongs to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It is a $375.00 fine if one is caught in this area.

I was caught in this area about three years ago but due to my research of the railroad, I was let off and it was suggested that I get a permit. Since that time I did get one and hve been stopped several more times without incident. However, I wa toldthat no other permits will be given out.

The tunnel east poral is ued for storing core samples for/from the Mon Feette expr.
