Motivation and Writing
It's said, one of the biggest challenges facing new writers is, not having a MS rejected, but getting the thing finished in the first place. Then the second biggest challenge is having it rej... nah, just kidding.
I'm currently working on my first adult novel and those two magical words, The End, seem pretty far off at times.
Which is why I truly admire the discipline and determination it must take for any writer to complete such a huge piece of work like a novel. And people like James who've finished TWO novels, well ...
Anyway, I was just wondering how others motivate themselves to keep going until they reach an end.
Btw; after having spent 2 1/2 years on my novel, rewriting it a zillion times, ya know what I forgot to do? I forgot to type The End at the end, before I sent it off to the publisher. Duh!
As to your questions. For me, the hardest part of a novel is letting go. I get so caught up in the characters that it's hard for me to walk out of their story.
There are a few tips I can share.
1) Be thinking about the novel as often as you can, especially when the mind isn't otherwise occupied (daydreaming, walking, ironing, relaxing). Make sure you keep it fresh by exploring any possibilities that come up, either in your head or ideally on paper. Mind mapping is a cool device for this. Don't spend too much time thinking about things before writing them down though. For example I first conceived the ending for "Hummingbird" in late 1999 but didn't write a single word of it until a week ago. Get any interesting thoughts you have down on paper or on disc. This point can't be overstressed.
2) Remember that whatever problems or blocks you face (plot, characterisation etc) can be solved best by simply writing through them. ie; go into first person POV for a character and start with I looked up at the .... and go from there. Or an even better way is to use first person POV to illuminate two characters by having your (female) narrator start with I love the way he... etc, thereby showing you/us his character and her perception of him. REmember to focus on specific detail in your exploration. Use the five senses, use tangible objects to echo intangibles through metaphor or symbolism and always use the character's voice as you perceive it. You can rewrite these passages later in third person POV if you wish. (If that's the overriding POV of the whole narrative.)
3) Don't bum out trying to get the novel to dominate your 'whole' life. We have other responsibilities - don't feel guilty about taking care of those too.
4) Re the point above. It is imperative though to set aside regular time to work on the novel. When and how much is up to the writer. It's better to do only half an hour each day, than 'save' it up with the intention of doing 3-4 hours on one day of the week. Something could override your intention on that day and you've done nothing, then you'll start feeling guilty. Not helpful.
5) Ask for advice. Wherever you can get it. Listen to every suggestion with an open mind, then make your own call.
6) Biiiiig point. Write the first draft for the characters and the story, write the second draft for the reader, write the third for the editor. Don't get stuck on thinking of selling points in the first draft. It's paramount in your first go at it to just get the authenticity and humanity of the story to come out. Then work on plot devices and hooks if you wish after you've got the story down. The final run through is for sharpening and polishing. If you're a writer who wants to perfect each page to final draft quality before moving to the next (not an approach I recommend btw) then this rule applies in its entirety on each page.
7) Get to know your characters to the degree you'd get to know someone in the tangible world who fascinates you. Get to the place where you'll make the character's decisions from the inside. The character is the bridge that allows the writer and reader to touch. (Think Michaelangelo and the Sistine.)
A writer has to need to write. No way around it. Liking it, wanting it, thinking it's pretty cool - won't do it. We have to need to tell our stories, to bring our characters out.

Hey Sand,
Thanks for that, some excellent tips there I've taken note of and will use as I continue on with my 'novel' journey...
Now, I know the golden rule of always writing down any thoughts/ideas as soon as they pop into your head, buuuut the other day I was busy doing something when this thought came, anyway, I figured because it was such a cool thought there's no way I'd forget it, so I didn't bother writing it down. And, yes, you guessed it, it's flown away to be with all the other brilliant ideas in some distant galaxy. I've tried remembering but the best I can recall is that it had something to do with raspberry jelly! How's that for narrowing it down? Ah well...

That's some excellent advice, Sanduleak! All very good points - I have only my own experience to add and that is that the only way I can finish a story is to be in love with it. If I'm not emotionally involved with the characters or my storyline isn't captivating to me, I lose my motivation. Trust me, it has happened, but the good thing is there's always other stories to be told!

Re: Motivation and Writing
I have been working on a novel for almost two years now, and I find that the hardest part would be getting the book completely finished. And not just getting it written, editing it is the hardest part of getting it done. I have been editing it for a year and I am tired of doing so, but luckily, I am almost done.

Re: Motivation and Writing
Most of the real 'hard' work in a novel goes into 1) getting the structure right and 2) the editing.
It's not difficult to write a decent short story because the writer is free of most technical 'rules' and can just express or explore. A novel though, really does need a backbone and a skin over it. Most novels need some semblance of a plot, and some variation on a beginning, middle and end.
I enjoy writing short stories and I find them liberating, almost like improvising a guitar solo. I also enjoy writing novels, but by their very nature they have a whole world of extra things to think about. I read somewhere that 90% of novels begun are never finished. Sobering thought. My advice to all is to keep 'nutting' it out until the plot is finished, then work hard on honing the focus on character, on the specific visual keys that will connect character/text/reader. It's something of a paradox that for all their size, the real meat of a novel is (to quote the architect Mies Van der Rohe) "in the details."

"Wise words. Whenever we stand up for something we hold as truth we attract attention. Such is life. The only way not to attract attention is to never say or stand up for anything, and what kind of a life is that. We owe it to ourselves to put reason and some mental effort into what we say, do the intellectual groundwork as it were and be prepared to be judged for it. If we're true to the power of our intellects and do this - then what follows - follows."
Indeed.
But, woe to all of those that come to non-"Politically Correct"-conclusons!
"Reasoned feedback and criticism should be welcome. We can 'potentially' learn from anyone. Even if the only lesson is how not to act. If the criticism at least shows some thought and insight, then the critic should be open to a two-way dialogue. If the criticism doesn't show the application of reason then its just scratchings in sand."
Indeed.
Two-way dialogue means NOT BANNING nor CENSORING anyone for POLITICAL INCORRECTNESS as any POLITICAL CORRECTNESS is INHERENTLY UNREASONABLE and DISHONEST.
"I understand Esther, that you may be personally insulted and hurt by Needle's rant, but that's probably just what he's looking to achieve. Inflicting hurt (via petty insult rather than intellectual superiority) might be all he's actually capable of. It's certainly all he's shown himself to be capable of."
Nonsense.
The terminally SSEE and Malignant Narcissists like "Esther" and her SSEE ilk just can't handle the WHOLE TRUTHS of REALITY as they are just completely DELUSIONAL and completely lacking in any actual PERSONAL INTEGRITY.
What else is new?
"If we don't respect the person, their words are just blanks. Over the internet, we mostly have to judge people by their words alone. Needle has the same chance as anyone else and can start making sense any time he wants to. So far I'm still waiting."
Nonsense.
"Making sense" to this "just blank" SSEE mentality is only being "PC".
Thanks but no thanks!
"As to racism, some people prefer the boundaries of their world to consist of ever decreasing circles. It's childish really; like a couple of 8 year olds declaring themselves an 'exclusive' club. And it's so easy, a boon for the lazy intellect. One doesn't have to say or do anything of significance or real intrinisic worth, because by default a racist judges themselves already to be superior to someone."
Indeed!
I am no "racist", as the SSEE and Malignant Narcissist "PC", actually are, and in their quite typical CHUTZPAH of lying hypocrisy.
What else is new?
"It's important to distinguish words and actions of value to those just designed to prick at us to get a reaction or to hurt."
True enough.
If it actually causes some non-SSEE SELF-REFLECTION, then the "reaction and hurt" may have been entirely worth it in the end.
"It took nature a few million years to put birds in the sky, but any idiot with a cheap gun can bring one down. Bringing down is not where the artistry lies."
Indeed.
The actual PC-BIGOTED-IDIOTS and PC-CENSORS are really only the terminally SSEE Malignant Narcissists, like "Esther" and "Naturyl" and "Cloudy" and their typical lying and hypocritical and SELF-ignorant ilk.
No "artistry" with them and their SSEE ilk except for Malignant Narcissist CHUTZPAH and "lying hypocrisy".

Do you write poetry or fiction? Do you have some knowledge of the arts? If so - let us see some and offer a critique or engage in a germaine discussion.

If you actually had any actual PERSONAL INTEGRITY and if you truely weren't such an SELFISHLY SUBJECTIVE and typically EGOTISTICAL EGOIST, I would be truely happy to show some to you, offer critiques, and engage in similarly germaine discussions.
Unfortunately, you don't and you are, still quite trapped in your SELF-limited SSEE mental pathology of lying hypocrisy and chutzpah, so I won't actually bother with you or your SSEE ilk.
Suggest you get a new scriptwriter. Your stuff was old a couple of years ago. I must admit though - your tenacity in continuing to babble your far right political gobbledeegook to an ever depleting audience who will allow you to post on their boards is truly astounding. Sandy,
I do suggest that you get a new name, as "wordsmith", would only be accurate being "wordsmith-corona", as you are so SSEE and morally and ethically and honestly "bankrupt".
What else is new?

Actually, "my stuff" is far older than just a couple of years, it is actually thousands of years older than any far more recent revelatory traditional religion or PC-DOGMATISM in existence, today: CLASSICAL PANTHEISM or CLASSICAL COSMOTHEISM.
As usual, you truely have no real clue.
What else is new?
"I must admit though - your tenacity in continuing to babble your far right political gobbledeegook to an ever depleting audience who will allow you to post on their boards is truly astounding."
There is nothing "Far Right" about my religion or philosophy of COSMOTHEISM, whatsoever.
The only one that wallows and babbles any such "FAR LEFT PC POLITICAL GOBBLEDEEGOOK", to an ever decreasing audience of those of any actual PERSONAL INTEGRITY, are only those that are just so SSEE "brainwashed" of any real or actual "reasoning" ability, and mostly due to the constant blare of MASS MEDIA PC-Lying Propaganda and PC-"TV-Conditioning", that they truely just do NOT and could not actually ever recognize the WHOLE TRUTHS of REALITY from DELUSIONAL PC-FICTION and Falsehoods, if they were wacked over the head with them, is ONLY your own LEMMING and SHEEP-like AUDIENCE of oxygen-wasting PC and SSEE CLEVER-VEGETABLES.
What else is new?
"If only you could be more creative and constructive. Ah well... "
If only you had some actual PERSONAL INTEGRITY and were not so terminally SSEE....and thus, such a lying hypocrite but alas, and ah well, indeed! LOL!

Back to the task at hand
I can see in the case of Needle there is no lack of motivation. It's purpose and therefore aim however will forever stagnate in the minds of angry old men.
Do (or rather did) you live in the Washington DC area?
Me? I was way motivated to write untold piles of garbage and untold reams of well-praised stuff that was good enough to be published. For years I did this and then wham!
The precise date of my motivation imploding? 30th Sept 2001 - the birth of my first daughter. Talk about nappies absorbing EVERYTHING. I am wringing out that motivation as I type.

The task at hand being "what", exactly?
Curious.
"I can see in the case of Needle there is no lack of motivation."
Thank you!
"It's purpose and therefore aim however will forever stagnate in the minds of angry old men."
Not exactly! LOL!
The actual purpose and aim of the "Needle" is to ever PREVENT the STAGNATION of the minds of EVERYONE
into angry old men and women at the end of a PURPOSE-LESS and MEANING-LESS LIFE WITHIN COSMOS and THEM-SELVES.
As is usual, the terminally SSEE or Malignant Narcissist has no REAL CLUE.
What else isn't new?
"Do (or rather did) you live in the Washington DC area?"
No.
However, one need not have lived there to see the MORAL and SPIRITUAL and MENTAL and INTELLECTUAL CORRUPTION and DEGENERACY of the ROTTING HEAD of the FISH that will soon spread out to STINK UP the rest of the BODY of the USA.
"Me? I was way motivated to write untold piles of garbage and untold reams of well-praised stuff that was good enough to be published."
Do you falsely believe that just because something is "well-praised" stuff by the terminally SSEE, that it was therefore actually "good enough" to be published, when it very well might have been just SSEE "tripe" that is actually ever allowed to be "published"?
Think about it.
"For years I did this and then wham!
The precise date of my motivation imploding? 30th Sept 2001 - the birth of my first daughter. Talk about nappies absorbing EVERYTHING. I am wringing out that motivation as I type."
I am sure that what you are "wringing out" is truly of far higher actual QUALITY, as is having a first daughter, than is any prolific "writing" of any such "publishable" SSEE tripe of obviously low quality.
