Mort meddling
I was just running the confrontation scene between Death and Mort through my head and then I thought...hey, wait a minute. Death accuses Mort of meddling, when those two are swinging those weapons at one another and they hit people's lifetimers one person dies and a lot of other people fall off cliffs...and then he accuses Mort of stealing his daughter, wasn't he previously hinting at getting the two of them together? And since when has Death not meddled? He meddles. Constantly.
So...the end of that rather rambling thought...do you think the end result is exactly what Death was aiming at in the first place?
I never did understand the daughter thing, that has always really bugged me! He was always winking and hinting and forcing them together all the time. I never understood how he blamed it all on Mort. You wouldn't think Death would be one of those people who got so ticked they blame everything on the other person. I mean, he's Death.

Well, I think its the whole 'father-daughter' thing - Death is just jealous - you wouldn't guess how much my folks don't like my boyfriend <sigh>

There is another theory which states that this has already happened

I can see the father/daughter thing happening...but I also have this feeling that Death knew all along. It's sorta like the Patrician and how he knows everything...
Your parents don't approve of your boyfriend? Oh well...my parents don't really approve of dating.

Well Death does remember everything 'as though it was tomorrow' (Soul Music) But even if you remember whats going to happen, it doesn't mean you have to like it!
No, I've only been going out with John for 20 months now. They still don't accept him. And I'm 21!!! Ah well, back to uni soon, get to see him again <floats off in little pink bubble>

Death doesn't remember things constantly.... I think its all in his head, but not instantly accessable. In Soul Music when Susan goes back in time to speak to him she mentions 'the rat' and he is puzzled before remembering. In Reaper Man he forgets how to get drunk (although he soon gets the hang of it again) and in Theif of Time he has a book of memories which I think must be some sort of memory aid.
I would imagine it would be to complicated for him to be aware of his entire past present and future, so most of the time he just waits to see what happens, and also lets older, unimportant events fade from concious memory.... but should he need/want to he can examine his memories in detail.
That's the way I'd organise my head if I was him, anyway.
As for why did he offer Mort an apprenticeship if he knew things were going to go wrong.... well.... its a free will thing init? if he can remember the future perfectly does he have any choice in his actions? Unless he doesn't just remember *the* future he remembers all possible futures and can choose which trouser leg he goes down.... a bit like that wright in Carpet people, I suppose.
Its all a bit complicated really.
I didn't mean to write such a long, rambling essay

*inspiration flash* The Uncertainty Principle!
Okay, I just love that part in Fifth Elephant...Anyways, it's been said before that only Great A'Tuin knows where he* is going. Not even Death really knows the future because it depends on what people do now. Er- yes. That made no sense, right? Yeah, I thought so.
I agree, it is 'a bit' complicated. I wonder if Terry Pratchett even knows...
